Scholz-Wende by the perspective of CDU
Řežábková, Kateřina ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Nigrin, Tomáš (referee)
The thesis examines the transformation of German foreign and security policy after the Russian invasion of Ukraine specifically during the period from February 2022 until June 2023 and the perspective of the oppositional CDU party during this time. The introductory part presents the historical context of the development of German foreign and security policy, the institutional framework for its formation, and the character of German in foreign policy culture. The theoretical framework presents three concepts for interpreting Germany as an actor in international relations: civil power, geo-economic power, and divided power. In the practical part, the fulfillment of the goals of Chancellor Olaf Scholz is being examined. Namely in the supply of weapons to Ukraine, in the anti-Russian sanctions, in the deepening of Germany's involvement in NATO missions, in the reformation and modernization of the Bundeswehr, and in the new quality of German diplomacy. The results of the research showed Germany's willingness to abandon some of its previous taboos, to bear the economic costs of its policy towards Russia and even at the cost of debt, to invest more in its own armed forces and in supporting Ukraine. However, the German government had to face both structural and institutional limits as well as the limits of...
Green Party and its attitude to the German military mission in case of Afghanistan and Iraq
Schuster, Michael ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
This bachelor thesis discusses the German Green Party and the changes it has undergone regarding the active involvement of the German army into a missions in abroad. The analysis describes the issue against the background of the conflicts in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. The German Greens are a party whose roots go back to the peace movement of the 1970s, and the peaceful way of resolving the conflicts is one of the main pillars of the party. When the Green Party first came into government in Germany, it immediately needed to solve the issue of involvement in the conflict in Kosovo. Government took the attitude towards it that it is necessary to be actively involved in it. Just two years later, the government coalition of the Social Democrats and the Green Party dealt with participation in another military conflict, which was caused by the terrorist attack of 11th September 2001. Despite expressing solidarity with American politicians, Germany did not join the "wars on terror" in Afghanistan and in Iraq to the same extent as the conflict in Kosovo. The thesis uses the concept of Zivilmacht (civilian power), which examines how Germany corresponds to this model under the government of the red-green coalition. The aim of the work is to explain the reasons for the change in the position of the Green...

Křížová, Lucie ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Dvořák, Pavel (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with deployment of German army within ISAF strategy in Afghanistan. The deployment of military forces is one of the most discussed queries in German politics and among German public. The thesis analyses the development in Afghanistan from 2001 to September 2013. The thesis is divided into three parts. Firstly, I define the theory of role and the concept of civil power, which is one of approaches for analysis of foreign policy. I define some criteria and according to them I examine, if Germany behaves in Afghanistan as civil power, for which is it considered. In the following part I deal with the development in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2009. I analyse the beginning of OEF and ISAF operations, mandate's extensions, the reasons for deployment in Afghanistan and the development of the security situation in country. The main part of this thesis is the deployment of German army within new ISAF strategy in Afghanistan, which was declared by American president Barack Obama in 2009. The thesis focuses on the attitude of Germany to the most important events in this period, for example to the declaration of new ISAF strategy, to international conference on Afghanistan in London, to transition to afghan lead, to the leaving of the international troops and to support after the year...
The Czech-German Military-Security Cooperation vs. the Arising Strategic Culture of the Czech Republic
Stojanovová, Kamila ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Dvořák, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor thesis depicts the Czech-German military-security cooperation in context of the security cultures of both countries. It focuses on the specific German strategic culture, however, the process of emerging strategic culture in the case of Czech Republic as a possible limiting factor for the military cooperation with Germany has also been pointed out. The theoretical base of this work are the concepts of political- military culture from Thomas U. Berger and strategic culture from Kerry Longhurst. The key criteria for the compatibility-analysis of both strategic cultures are the historical experience with the use of military force, the attitudes to army and use of force across the political elite, in the public opinion and in strategic papers, and the legitimation process of military missions. According to this, the aim of the work is to find the reason why in the period prior to the accession of Czech Republic to NATO the cooperation in the political and practical spheres didn't take place in the same intensity. At the same time, it tries to find the reason why the participation of the Czech Army in PRT Faizabad has been the only significant moment in the military cooperation with Germany after the NATO-accession in 1999. However, this work doesn't leave out the recent development, which...

Balcová, Katarína ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Martin (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with German security and foreign policy in the period from its reunification in 1990 until now and focuses on deployment of German soldiers abroad. The aim of this thesis is to analyse eleven most important cases, in which Germany decided to support military missions abroad and to find out if in the decision making process were prevailing normatively guided factors corresponding with concepts of multilateralism, civilian power and antimilitarism or pragmatic guided factors regarding rather economical, geopolitical or other interests. The chosen cases are analysed using single-case studies and sorted into three subchapters following the terms of office of German chancellors. The results of these analyses are presented in the form of a table.
The Importance of two German-Czech European Battlegroups with regard to German-Czech Relations
Žemla, Daniel ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Lizcová, Zuzana (referee)
The goal of this Bachelor thesis was to examine the importance of two German- Czech European Battlegroups with regard to German-Czech security relations. This thesis is concerned with the mutual security cooperation of both countries since 1990. It reveals a dynamic development in the bilateral relationships, especially a conciliation with the past, which has been a precondition for later successful cooperation. Differing historical experience projected into an attitude of both states towards their armed forces, which is noticeable until the present day. The thesis further analyzes the German role during the NATO enlargement in 1999 and discusses the military cooperation of the Czech Republic with the Federal Republic of Germany both in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union. The main emphasis is placed on the concept of European Battlegroups and its practical realisation in four particular examples: Czech-Slovak (2-2009), the first German-Czech (2-2012), the first Visegrad (1-2016) and the second German-Czech (2-2016) European Battlegroups. The thesis does not marginalize current developments and therefore in its conclusion focuses on the planned creation of the second Visegrad (2-2019) and the third German-Czech Battlegroups (2-2020). The data mainly comes from numerous...
