Comparative Analysis of Participation in Conflicts with the EU and NATO Presence Marián Zachar Abstract Bachelor thesis "Rupture of the Security Policy of France under the Leadership of Nicolas Sarkozy? Comparative Analysis of Participation in Conflicts with the EU and NATO Presence" evaluates whether the arrival of President Nicolas Sarkozy marked the break or the so called rupture in the French security policy. The first chapter focuses on the historical background of the French foreign and security policy, especially during the presidency of Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy. Their priorities identified in the Defense White Papers and their institutional relations within the EU and NATO were further developed in the following chapters, where approach of both presidents to missions led by NATO and the EU was analyzed. The second chapter consists of the analysis of the Artemis mission in Congo and EUFOR in Chad. Seasonal scarcity and sharing norms
Bartoš, Vojtěch
Sharing provides one of few sources of insurance in poor communities. It gains prominence\nduring adverse shocks, often largely aggregate, when it is also costliest for individuals to share. Yet it is little understood how scarcity affects individual willingness to share and willingness to enforce sharing from others, an important ingredient in sustaining prosocial behavior. This is what this paper examines. I conduct repeated within-subject lab-in-the-field experiments among Afghan subsistence farmers during a lean and a postharvest season of relative plenty. These farmers experience seasonal scarcities annually. Using dictator and third party punishment games I separate individual sharing behavior from enforcement of sharing norms. While sharing exhibits high degree of temporal stability at both the aggregate, and, to a large extent, at the individual level, the enforcement of sharing norms is substantially weaker during the lean season. The findings suggest that the farmers are capable of sustaining mutual sharing through transitory periods of scarcity. It remains an open question whether exposure to unexpected shocks or prolonged periods of scarcity might result in breakdown of prosociality due to loosened sharing norms enforcement on a community level.

Comparison of economic development of Iraq and Afghanistan from 1945 to present
Kaštilová, Klára ; Pavlík, Petr (advisor) ; Neumann, Pavel (referee)
This study is focused on the comparison of the economic development of the two Asian countries, Iraq and Afghanistan from the end of the 2nd World War to the present. During this period both of these countries faced many political turbulence in the form of changing authoritarian regimes, numerous national or transnational conflicts as a direct threat of terrorist organizations. The presence of foreign actors in both countries, especially in the early 21st century when the US declared war on terrorism after the air attacks of 11 September 2001, brought to the destruction of important economic infrastructure on one side and humanitarian aid to long distressed civilian population on the other. The current economic situation is therefore strongly influenced by both international political developments as well as national apparatus which often lacks transparency, legitimacy and effectiveness. Despite considerable analogy in development of Iraq and Afghanistan the study shows that Iraq due to the oil industry was able to use its economic potential while Afghanistan is regularly placed on the lowest rungs of the economic development.
Intervention in Afghanistan: Soviet and American experience
Tzoumas, Janis ; Matějka, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Knotková, Vladimíra (referee)
This diploma thesis analyzes the approach of the Soviet Union and that of the US-led coalition to state-building in Afghanistan, which today, as in the past, takes place against the backdrop of counterinsurgency warfare. The analysis in the field of politics, economy and security shows that in both cases the intervening powers have focused on building a strongly centralized system of government, in spite of the fact that the Afghan countryside's relationship to the Kabul-based government had traditionally been characterized by broad autonomy. The intervening powers' efforts have futhermore been associated with the export of exogenous political structures and for this reason attention is also drawn to the question to what extent the intervening powers' approach to the modernization of Afghan society has contributed to the escalation of unrelenting conflict.
