The rise of the robo-journalists: What human journalists think of the creativity of their AI colleagues
Ellekrog, Ole Bøgh ; Macková, Veronika (advisor) ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (referee)
The limits and potentials of robo-journalism and Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has entered journalism in recent years, are important to track and predict. To do this, this thesis interviewed and surveyed five top researchers and eight journalists from newsrooms across Europe, all working closely with AI. Specifically, the thesis focuses on creativity, a concept that has been suggested as a potential limit to AI. In the thesis, a list of places where AI is already in use and a list of tasks in journalism that require creativity are compiled and compared. Potential limits to AI and potential threats posed by AI are also identified. Further, a mini-Turing Test is conducted, suggesting that human texts may be preferable to readers, no matter its content. In the end, the thesis concludes that AI in journalism is on the verge of surpassing humans in certain tasks but that it may never be able to mimic "the human touch" of creative journalism. Keywords Artificial Intelligence, AI, robo-journalism, journalism, creativity, creative journalism, European journalism, the human touch, Turing Test,

This master's diploma thesis examines journalism students' attitudes towards the journalism profession and their perceptions of the field of journalism. The thesis develops its main theme on several levels. Important perspective represents students' thinking about the ethical aspects of journalism, as well as their motivation - not only to study the field of journalism but also to pursue it in practice in the sense of employment or career. This thesis explores these themes via qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with undergraduate journalism students from three Czech universities. Specifically, students from Charles University in Prague, Masaryk University in Brno, and Palacký University in Olomouc. Research began to focus on the perspectives of journalism students in the late 20th century. Since then, there has been a lot of research on this topic all over the world. Online harassment among male and female journalists in Nepal and its impact on their work
Manandhar, Akriti ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Lábová, Sandra (referee)
Online harassment of journalists is a growing concern worldwide as more journalists report burnouts, fatigue and desire to quit journalism. This research was based on in-depth interviews of five male and five female Nepali journalists. It aimed at investigating the forms of online harassment journalists face in Nepal, the impacts it has on them and the strategies they employ to deal with it. It was of research interest to examine differences in harassment experiences of male and female journalists. Results showed the common forms of harassment journalists face are cyberstalking, sexual harassment, gendered harassment, manipulation and intimidation. Due to this, journalists decreased social media usage and self-censored themselves on it. It led to fears of physical harm, judgement and being discredited. Most interviewed journalists ignored it considering it a part of their job. Complaining about harassment bore no positive results. Women from the sample faced comparatively more sexual and gendered harassment, with harassment being more personal and of higher intensity. This had adverse impacts on some female interviewees leading them to quit social media and the profession altogether, which further increases gender gap in the heavily male-dominated industry. Younger and less experienced journalists...

The response of Dutch political journalists to the counter-narrative from right-wing populist parties PVV and FvD to the securitization of COVID-19
Wagemaker, Puck Anne ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Dimitrov, Michal (referee)
This study explored how political journalists enact the counter-response from right-wing populist parties PVV and FvD to the securitization of COVID-19 in the Netherlands. The study conducted seven semi-structured interviews with Dutch political journalists from various media about their journalistic roles. This role decides how much and in what way the resistance from populist parties to the securitization of COVID-19 is given a platform in the media. Built upon pre-consisting concepts and definitions of the journalistic role, the findings of the study show that while a clear discrepancy is visible between the two parties, the journalists predominantly enact the counter-reaction of both PVV and FvD in an educational role - in which the journalists aim to give more context to the news. Aside from this, the study found that within the gatekeeper role - next to solely opening and closing the gates -, a third stage exists within this role. While the gates closed for FvD due to denying the existence of the virus, certain exceptions still opened the gates for the party due to the opposing character of the party. Keywords Securitization, right-wing populism, COVID-19, journalism, journalistic role, The Netherlands, Partij voor de Vrijheid [PVV], Forum voor Democratie [FvD]
Ethically controversial aspects of selected media relations tools
Pejsová, Aneta ; Ortová, Nina (advisor) ; Shavit, Anna (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with one of the areas of public relations - media relations. First it characterizes media relations as a field, then it describes individual media relations tools, and in selected ones it also explores their ethical side. It also assesses the relationship between PR workers and journalists and how important they are to each other's work. It then represents the codes of ethics that regulate media relations and their practices. The practical part uses both quantitative and qualitative research. First, PR professionals are subjected to a quantitative online questionnaire. Afterwards, interest turns to active lifestyle media journalists who gave an interview on the topic of media relations ethics. Through these two methods, the author attempts to find out how media relations work in practice, how professionals view problematic aspects of media relations, and what personal experience they have with selected media relations tools.
