The Theory of Judgment in School of Brentano and in the Early Work of Husserl
Janoušek, Hynek ; Urban, Petr (advisor) ; Moural, Josef (referee) ; Šebestík, Jan (referee)
The submitted doctoral thesis is an attempt to describe the nature and of the development of Brentano's theory of judgment. This description is followed by an introduction to the further development of Brentano's theory in the work of Brentano's most distinguished students Kazimierz Twardowski (1866-1938), Alexius Meinong (1853-1920), Anton Marty (1843-1914) and Edmund Husserl (1859-1938). The thesis is divided into five parts: The first part is dedicated to the explanation of Brentano's theory of judgment and starts with an interpretation of Brentano's two early books on Aristotle - On the several senses of Being in Aristotle (1862) and The Psychology of Aristotle (1867). The thesis presents Brentano's understanding of "being" in the sense of truth, his interpretation of the Aristotelian categories, his theory of parts and wholes, and his theory of intentionality and self-consciousness. Our interpretation then proceeds to Brentano's most known work, i.e. to Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint (1874), and presents the basic concept of this book, the concept of psychical phenomena. The resulting classification of psychical phenomena into three kinds introduces judgments as a kind of psychical phenomenon whose main feature consists in existential affirmation or rejection of an intentional object....
Learning English: Exceptional Ways and Needs of Exceptional Children
Urban, Petr ; Hofmannová, Marie (advisor) ; Fořtíková, Jitka (referee)
This diploma thesis has outlined the issues of gifted education and the problems which this whole area of education faces. It introduced the basic topics related to the gifted population such as the gift itself, its division etc. In addition, it described the basic forms of work with gifted students, with emphasis on the importance of teacher training and introduced (using interviews) the personal characteristics of teachers which are considered by the gifted students important. Furthermore it presented specific training needs of gifted students and showed the possibilities in helping the gifted. In its second part, this diploma thesis also presented some of the unusual methods which can be used in the process of teaching and which are usually highly effective when presented to gifted students. Individual methods were analysed and possible applications of each of those were described. For a better understanding, each of the methods was accompanied by an example. During the research I realized even more that the issue of gifted children and gifted individuals in general in the Czech Republic is not sorted out adequately. There are still many challenges to solve before talented individuals will be given the space for their education and also the following application at work and in life. Therefore,...
The Truman Doctrine: Greece and Turkey
Urban, Petr ; Smetana, Vít (advisor) ; Fojtek, Vít (referee)
In this paper, I compare the causes, development and effect, that the promulgation of the Truman Doctrine had. I argue that the theses, declared by President Truman contrasted fundamentally with the subsequent advancement of their application to contain communism in Greece and Turkey. I prove this incompatibility on the analysis of (1) the causes, why the Doctrine was promulgated in the United States, with stress on the Turkish Straits crisis of 1946, (2) the American economic and military aid to Greece in 1947-1948 and (3) the strategic support of Turkey by the United States. This triplet of events forms the backdrop to the three related aims, which the authors of the Doctrine pursued. One was to garner domestic support for a swift change in the American foreign policy towards the role of a world superpower. The second aim was to forestall the expansion of the Soviet sphere of influence (to contain communism) and the final aim was the support of freedom and democracy as a means of countering the communist ideology. The three given points contrast with the actual problems that threatened Greece and Turkey. By analyzing the key events surrounding the Truman Doctrine through the years 1946 to 1948 I look for the reason for its success. I see it in the combination of a moralist ideological attitude on...

Expression and meaning. Towards the problem of language in E. Husserl's philosophy 1900-1914
Urban, Petr ; Petříček, Miroslav (advisor) ; Polívka, Jiří (referee) ; Novotný, Karel (referee)
The present thesis deals with Husserl's philosophy of language in the period of 1900 - 1914. It aims to present a complex interpretation of its main features, transformations and inner tensions. We use the method of immanent interpretation, i.e. we do not put Husserl's thought into a broad historical context, but interpret it exclusively against background of his own philosophy as a whole. The text is divided in two main parts. The first one is devoted to the Logical Investigations (1900-01) and presents its basic analysis of the meaningful use of lingual expressions. In particular, we focus on the concept of lingual expression as a meaningmediated intentional relationship to an object and we explain it against the background of Husserl's project of the phenomenological elucidation of fundamentals of an a priori and objective theory of science, namely the pure logic. The second part deals with lectures and research manuscripts dating from 1901 to 1914. First, we explain the important breakthrough of the noematic concept of meaning in reference to the Lectures on the Doctrine of Meaning 1908 and related research manuscripts. In the next step, we explore the Manuscripts for the Revision of the Sixth Logical Investigation 1913-14. In these texts Husserl reaches his most mature approach to the phenomenon of...
