Clients of Residential Youth Care at Risk of Dropout from Upper Secondary Education
Bílá, Pavlína ; Dvořák, Dominik (advisor) ; Straková, Jana (referee)
Early school leaving represents a serious problem in the European and recently also in the Czech context. The aim of this thesis is to research the dropout risks at clients of the Youth Diagnostic Facility using qualitative methods. The subject of the research is a group of six boys aged 15- 17 years. The goal of the research is to map the causes of educational issues through case studies and identify the reasons for dropout among the facility's clients; to explore the approach of schools and their staff to the education of these individuals; to describe the education conditions provided by the diagnostic facility; and to find out how the clients themselves see their education process and whether their attitude and approach to education changed during their stay at the facility. The results show that in some cases placement in a diagnostic or educational facility can increase, by providing suitable conditions, the chances of obtaining secondary education. Towards school inclusion
Marques, Karin ; Straková, Jana (advisor) ; Lazarová, Bohumíra (referee) ; Hájková, Vanda (referee)
Towards School Inclusion Abstract Since September 2016, the so-called inclusive amendment, i.e. Decree No. 27/2016 Coll., on the education of pupils with special educational needs, has been in force in Czech schools. The multiple-case study of three schools describes the process of change in different contexts prior to 2016. Three inclusive schools were selected based on measuring the level of inclusion and their public declaration of striving for inclusion. The data research sources were narrative interviews with current and former principals of the selected schools, their deputies, some teachers, assistants, parents and/or representatives of the municipality. IPA was used to analyze the data. The inclusive school is a product of a principal's vision and their transformative leadership. The key for a successful transformation was to change not only processes and structures but mainly the culture, thus common understanding of the goals. The central concept was communication and collaboration. The respondents perceived themselves as pioneers and communities sharing the same values. Creating conditions for respecting the needs and differences of each child and gaining community trust were the necessary steps for this transformation. It was important to raise sufficient funds, to work hard and to improve...

Popelářová, Markéta ; Straková, Jana (advisor) ; Simonová, Jaroslava (referee)
The thesis focuses on students of teaching in the first year of their studies at the Faculty of Education of Charles University in Prague, specifically on their perception of the teaching profession and the teaching studies they are completing. The paper answers the questions why students choose the Faculty of Education, how they perceive the first year of study at the Faculty of Education and whether they want to teach. The theoretical part presents previously published Czech and foreign findings concerning the factors that motivate students to go into teaching, or how students evaluate studying at the Faculty of Education or what they perceive as the advantages and disadvantages of the teaching profession. The theoretical part also introduces the Faculty of Education of Charles University in Prague in more detail, because it is where the research part of this thesis was conducted. The research part shows the results of the mixed research. It consists of a quantitative method in a minor part and presents data from questionnaires for first year students. However, the dominant part of the research is made up of a qualitative method, in which the author analysed fifteen interviews with first year undergraduate students. In these interviews, she investigated why students decided to study teaching, how...

Prokop, Daniel ; Tuček, Milan (advisor) ; Katrňák, Tomáš (referee) ; Straková, Jana (referee)
PROKOP, Daniel. Dynamika sociálního vyloučení v České republice: Nerovné šance ve vzdělávání. Praha, 2022. 124 s. Disertační práce (Ph.D.) Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut sociologických studií. Katedra sociologie. Školitel: doc. Milan Tuček Abstract This cumulative thesis contains three papers focused on analysis of inequality of educational opportunity (IOE) and limited educational and social mobility in the Czech Republic. The first article analysis effects of parent's cultural, social, economic and human capital in different educational transitions. In accordance with the theory of effectively maintained inequality (EMI), the parental capitals and social status play the biggest role in accessing secondary education with GCE (high school with diploma) which is precondition to tertiary education. However, detailed analysis shows that poverty and low skills (HC) of parents have biggest effect in early phases of education whereas social, cultural capital and wealth of the parents are drivers of inequality in later transitions. Hence, the EMI theory is not in conflict with life course perspective assuming significant and waning effects of (some) parental capitals. The second paper analyses the relationship between inadequate housing and the school performance of children from poor Czech...
Pupil participation as a way of education for democratic citizenship. Obstacles of its development and their successful overcoming.
Urbanová, Eliška ; Moree, Dana (advisor) ; Straková, Jana (referee) ; Čermák, Daniel (referee)
Eliška Urbanová, abstract of thesis: Pupil participation as a way of education for democratic citizenship. Obstacles of its development and their successful overcoming. Abstract The curricular documents of many democratic states, including the Czech Republic, require schools to develop pupils' competences for democratic culture. The results of the international comparative research show that Czech pupils are above the average at the level of knowledge, but below the average in the area of skills and attitudes. Because skill and attitude component can be strengthened by pupil participation, its implementation in Czech schools probably fails to be effective. The purpose of this thesis is to detect possible obstacles in the implementation of pupil participation at the level of school culture and at the level of structure of schools and education system, and examine what can help overcome these obstacles. Methods: The research was carried out in the form of a multiple holistic case study of three schools that have extensive experience with pupil participation. In-depth interviews with thirty teachers and the study of school documents took place. Results: Teachers play a key role in how well the participation will be realized, because without their support most students will not be able to participate...
Transition from pre-primary to primary education of children with low attendance in kindergarten
Picková, Helena ; Straková, Jana (advisor) ; Tomková, Anna (referee) ; Majerčíková, Jana (referee)
The dissertation focuses on the parental attitudes about education of their children during transition from pre-primary to primary education. The study focused on families without identified socio-economic disadvantage whose children were not enrolled in kindergarten. The research design was a longitudinal multiple case study of seven families located in the Liberec region. Data was gathered at multiple points during the children's transition from the kindergarten to primary school. The study focused on the reasons that led parents gave for deciding that their children would either participate in non-regular pre-primary education within nursery schools or not attend the pre-primary classes at all. The study inquired about: parents' general attitudes about pre-primary education; their views on the right educational path for their children; and their self-reported approach to their children's overall development. The study also examined the parents' feelings about the introduction of an obligatory pre-school year and their process of making the enrollment decisions. The results showed that although these families did have some common characteristics, the reasons given for opting not let their children attend preschool, were diverse. Mothers of these children were passionate about doing what's best...
How Pupils and Their Parents Evaluate its Transfer to Multi-year Gymnasium?
Slanařová, Jana ; Greger, David (advisor) ; Straková, Jana (referee)
The multi-year gymnasium is a part of the Czech educational system for the long time. Those gymnasiums are one of the most discussed institutions in terms of usefulness. Various studies are made in dependence on that trying to find reasons for choosing multi-year gymnasiums (as thesis "Why Do Primary School Children Choose Multi-year Gymnasiums?", which preceded this work). The aim of this diploma thesis is already the next step: figuring out, if gymnasium met pupils' expectations, and also to receive feedback and evaluation of their parents. It focuses on pupils' academic self-concept, on problems associated with transfer to multi-year gymnasium and on positives, which the pupils would not probably meet at elementary school with. Mathematics Problem Solving of Gifted Students
Straková, Jana ; Vondrová, Naďa (advisor) ; Novotná, Jarmila (referee)
The thesis focuses on the ways of thinking and acting of students from the Czech and the Slovak Republic, while solving application problems. On the one hand the thesis offers the identification and categorisation of solving strategies of mathematical problems by gifted students. On the other hand, there is an attempt for the insight into students' thinking processes by means of an in-depth analysis of their written work. I focus on the utilisation of students' mathematical knowledge when solving real-life problems, on the extent to which they apply automatic mathematical methods, on students' reactions to mistakes and unsuccessful solving strategies, their grasping of tasks and their discourse. The data is collected by means of students' written solutions to two mathematical problems, a questionnaire, semi-structured interviews with teachers and observations of their lessons. The data has been analysed through grounded theory and the results are compared with particular results of international comparative researches (PISA and TIMSS).
