Král, Martin ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)

The form of this thesis is the quantitative analysis of the content of the defined sample that is composed of two monitored Czech daily newspapers: Mlada fronta Dnes and Pravo. The time period under review is appointed for two six-month intervals. The former interval starts on April 2005 and ends by the breaking Convention of the Green Party on 24th September 2005 where Mr. Martin Bursik was called to the chair of the party. The latter interval continues after Convention and lasts till the end of March 2006. There is also another breaking point when the electoral preferences of the party have approached the five percent limit on January 2006 for the first time (this minimal limit is needed for gaining the Chamber of Deputies' chairs in the Chamber elections). The work has proved that there is not a significant change of referring after the Chairmanship change, but after another point: reaching the five percent limit of preferences as much more important breaking point. Slívová, Hana ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Trampota, Tomáš (referee)
This disertation named The Definition of "Popular" as Conceived by Theoreticians and Consumers of Popular Culture (On the example of the Use of the Terms ..Popular Music" and ..Pop") aims to present the ideas of four theoreticians of popular culture - John Storey, Theodor W. Adorno. Dwight Macdonald and John Fiske - in order to define what do the terms ..popular" and ..pop" mean, mainly in the context with music. As it has shown, the definition of what pop and popular migh be is not as easy and unambiguous. The conception of these terms differ from one theoretician to another as they conceive it from different point of view. This point of view might be influenced by their political orientation, period of their lifetime and experience. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Generating meaning of popular texts demonstrated on the czech television serial Místo nahoře
Fričová, Michaela ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
The starting point of this piece of work is proposition that television and its texts are an agent of the dominant ideology in society. Through the princip of hegemony the rulling class imposes its meanings and values on the subordinated classes. Hegemony is based on allowing resistent and alternative meanings which are nevertheless articulated in terms of the dominant ideology and are subsequently incorporated into the existing system. This thesis then follows John Fiske's understanding of popular culture and activated texts . These are texts which do not imp lose one limited meani ng on its readers, but which allow its readers by means of various strategies to interpret the text with regards to their social position. The second part of this work includes semiological analysis of a particular product of popular culture - the television serial Misto nahore. The emphasis is put on the process of encoding - how the dominant meanings and values are encoded and implied in the text. Besides, the attention is directed towards the 'opening' strategies of the text. This section also includes an analysis of the secondary texts (newspaper and magazine articles ) and terciary texts (viewers' reacti ons and opinions on the web). I examine whether the sec ondary texts promote dom inant or resistant reading strategies,...
Home Cooking on TV
Adámková, Tereza ; BENDOVÁ, Helena (advisor) ; REIFOVÁ, Irena (referee)
In this thesis, I am doing the cultural analysis of culinary programs on home cooking. Specifically, the Czech programs Dita P. Diary, Carolina, The Home Cook, When Dad Cooks, Boys in Action and Cheap and Tasty with Lada Hruska. At the same time this work briefly presents the context of British culinary programs. The aim is to deduce what values the Czech programs can transmit to viewers. Inspiration in this respect draws upon cultural texts dealing with food / tv studies mentioned in the introductory part of the thesis. In the last part of the thesis it occurs that a particular aspect of the programs is too broadly defined. As a result only very general characteristics of values presented in the analysed programs could be deduced.
