Media reflection of Václav Havel during his presidental elections
Žáková, Michaela ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee) ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor)
The main objective of my diploma thesis is compiling media reflection of Václav Havel during his presidential elections and find out whether it is possible to determine some ideological background of newspapers - their political orientation, a tendentious way of informing etc. Václav Havel is one of the most significant personalities in Czech modern history. This dramatist and writer was several times imprisoned for dissident activity, his dramas and essays were prohibited before 1989. In spite of this he markedly participated in fall of the regime when he dealt with members of KSČ about the future of the state during the Velvet Revolution. Thanks to his political and citizen involvement he was elected the president on 29th December 1989 by Federal Assembly. The next years he succeeded again. He left high politics in 2003 but he continues to comment important national issues. I choose qualitative research as an appropriate method, because it allows a detailed analysis. I am going to use "grounded theory". The result will be a probe into ideological background of two dailies - Rudé právo/Právo and Mladá fronta/Mladá fronta DNES. These dailies have survived the fall of the regime, so they are the only possible variant.
Comparison of the proportional coverage of ODS and ČSSD on the news pages of the Mladá Fronta DNES and Právo newspapers before the 2006 national elections to the Chambers of Deputies of the Czech Republic
Osoba, Michal ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee) ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor)
Diploma thesis "Comparison of the proportional coverage of ODS and ČSSD on the news pages of the Mladá fronta Dnes and Právo newspapers before the 2006 national elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech republic" examines and compares, how the two largest Czech political parties ODS (Civic Democratic Party) and ČSSD (Czech Social Democratic Party) and their representatives were represented at daily newspapers Mladá fronta Dnes and Právo one month before the elections, using quantitative analysis with the SPSS program. Thesis briefly introduces history and present of both analyzed daily newspapers and both political parties and mentions key events of the pre-elect period on the Czech political scene. Analysis is preceded by a theoretical part, which analyzes links between media and politics with emphasis on a pre-elect period. In the analytical part, at first, the selected method of analysis is described including setting a basic sample. After that findings are interpreted in four categories according to established research questions. Every chapter is accompanied by a summary and key charts. Benefits of the thesis are summarized in the conclusion, where advances of further research are also proposed.
Framing of media content
Šulcová, Ladislava ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (referee) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor)
Diploma thesis "Framing of media news" deals with the process of meaning construction of news messages. In the first chapter framing is described as multi-dimensional concept with inconsistent paradigma. Here is the effort to define this concept clearly. It is defined as process of meaning construction on the basis of "salience" and "selection". In the further chapter framing is distinguished from ideological bias and identified as "unintentional and non-ideological proces". The framing and agenda-setting relation is reassessed, it is argued that both concepts are based on different theoretical premises and for Media studies the both are more useful as two separate concepts. The next charter deals with the history of concept. Here is also emphasized the necessity to understand framing as integrated communication process not only as a media-effect method. The following chapter presents three paradigmatic outlooks, called cognitive, constructionist, and critical, framing is also presented in context of social constraction of reality. A typology of generic and issue-specific frames is proposed. The practical research draws on the theoretical knowledge and investigates presence of generic frames, episodic or thematic, in the evening news Události of Czech Television and Televizní noviny of Nova television.
Focused on Africa : the Czech news coverage
Bahounková, Petra ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee) ; Trampota, Tomáš (advisor)
My dissertation "Focused on Africa: the Czech TV news coverage" tries to describe how the Czech TV news programs reflect the African events. Contents of the current international news coverage are influenced by many factors: the application of news values, impact of globalization processes, the countries' position in the global state hierarchy as well as the contextual factors of the mentioned countries. As early as 1922, Walter Lippmann said that the news media are windows into a wide world lying beyond our immediate experience. These particular windows define our cognitive world map. His words still apply - even almost a hundred years later. News media help their recipients to make their own view of places they do not know personally. Africa has traditionally been perceived as a continent stigmatized by famine, AIDS, civil wars, humanitarian crises or economic problems. That's why I'm trying to capture the way in which Czech TV news programs inform about African events - which topics they prefer and which African countries they are focusing on in their news programs. I'm trying to find an answer whether Czech news media contribute to the above mentioned perceiving of the African continent.
The influence of usual coverage on the content of supplement magazines of the Newspapers MF DNES, Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny
Matura, Jan ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Lábová, Alena (referee)
The master thesis "The Influence of Picture Coverage on the Content of Supplement Magazines of the Newspapers MF DNES, Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny" is focused on the influence of picture coverage on the production of supplements of three national daily newspapers. The research conducted within the thesis evaluates how the editors work with picture material, and combines a quantitative research of the picture coverage of the newspapers with the qualitative research of interviews with heads of the editors of the magazines. The research examines what kind of picture coverage appears in the supplements, how the editors inform about sources of the picture coverage and what is the influence of the picture coverage on production of texts and articles. Both parts of the research are compared, and as a result, the comparison shows the differences between measured data of the quantitative analysis and opinions of managers on picture coverage in their magazines. The following magazines are included in the research: Víkend Hospodářských novin, Pátek Lidových novin a Magazín DNES, which belongs to MF DNES. In the theoretical part the author gives basic theses of media effects, agenda setting, gatekeeping, carries out a search of available researches and presents an overview of the media market of national...

Analysis of the means of communication and self-presentation of Czech parliamentary parties in 2004, before and after the Czech Republic joined the European Union
Škývarová, Soňa ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
Since the overall topic of my diploma thesis is political communication, I focused my attention on Czech parliamentary political parties and their internal communication as well as their public communication strategies. To limit the scope of my research to a reasonable size, I selected year 2004 because three elections were held that year: European Parliament elections, Senate elections, and local authority elections. The exact topic of this thesis is "Analysis of the Means of Communication and Self-Presentation of Czech Parliamentary Parties in 2004, Before and After the Czech Republic Joined the European Union". There are three basic components of my thesis: the theoretical part exploring the notion of political communication, the descriptive part dealing with the political system of the Czech Republic in the given year, and finally the analysis of the communication methods of the selected parties. My research was carried out in several phases. I studied thoroughly my subject and formulated definitions and drew graphs to capture the notion of political communication. I defined it as acts carried out by political actors, both inside and outside of the political organization. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Dobrovodský, Martin ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
The diploma thesis Analysis of the political instrumentalization of the periodic press Mladá fronta DNES in the period before elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2013 examines, if leader of the political party ANO Andrej Babiš used his position of the owner of the media group MAFRA to influence media content in the periodic press Mlada fronta DNES during the period before elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2013. Theoretical framework briefly describes the basic concepts of political communication and geopolitical division of the models of political communication including the Czech media scene. Focus is primarily on the development and possible ways of instrumentalization of printed media operating in the Czech media market after 1989. Results of quantitative research showed that four other political parties gained more media attention then political party ANO which ended up second in the election. The title pages of the Mlada fronta DNES therefore was not used to increase promotion of Andrej Babis and his political party. The final part of the research interprets the results of quantitative analysis regarding the possible instrumentalization in terms of political topics presented on the front pages of the...
Event or/and news? : from Galtung and Ruge to contemporary model of news values
Johanidesová, Darina ; Trampota, Tomáš (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
Events do not get into the news simply be happening. It means that events have to be seen, heared, recognized, come from some identified source, they have to be chosen as a news and then presented. What are the characteristics that make the news from the events? The characteristic is newsworthiness. Two norwegian scientists, Johan Galtung and Man Ruge, had studied newsworthiness of overseas events presented in Norwegian press. As a result they presented study about twelve factors that influence the selection. Their study come from 1963. My aim is to reconsider their findings to present day journalism in the Czech republic. First part of my work will be theoretical thinking about news values, second part will be analysis of three czech dailies. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
