Gentrification in the post-socialist context of Central Europe. Comparative case study - Warsaw and Prague
Novotný, Ondřej ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Kochnowski, Roman (referee)
The thesis deals with the issue of gentrification in the post-socialist context of Central Europe. This phenomenon occurs mainly in the inner city districts, where the local social structure is disturbed through the physical upgrade of the neighborhood (e.g. flats, shops and restaurants) by pushing out the poorer layers of society by the more wealthy ones. In the cities marked by the communist urban planning, the inner city parts were neglected at the expense of peripheral prefab concrete buildings, thus creating great potential for local investment after the fall of the Iron Curtain. The process of gentrification is illustrated in this paper by the comparison of the two city districts Praga-Północ (Warsaw) and Prague 7 (Prague) in the time between 1989 and 2017. As a starting point for comparison, a special case of Prenzlauer Berg district in Berlin is used, where the process has shown significant impact already in the 1990s. In this respect the aim of the thesis is to investigate the links between Warsaw and Prague, also how these cases differ. At the same time, the role of the public sector is studied as a relevant factor influencing gentrification in the post-socialist region of Central Europe. The results of the study showed that analogous processes of gentrification appear in the Praga-Północ and...

"I am a Jew who believes in Christ.": ambivalence of Franz Werfel's approach to Judaism and Christianity by an example of his play Paul among the Jews
Šulcová, Veronika ; Zelená, Alena (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
In the life of significant representative of the Prague German Literature Franz Werfel, Judaism and Christianity played an important role, which was noticeably reflected in his work. This typical Werfel's feature is closely connected with his hometown Prague where Czechs, Germans and Jews coexisted together at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. Their cultures were mutually mixed and influenced by each other, Judaism and Christianity was confronted both with the Czech and the German culture. This bachelor thesis follows the antagonistic attitudes that Franz Werfel maintained towards Judaism, to which he felt bonded thanks to his origin and identity, and to Christianity, which was from his childhood of big importance for him on the emotional level. The paper examines the issue of Werfel's approach to the both religions on one of his plays Paul among the Jews from 1926, describing, according to its author, the tragic moment when Christianity detached from Judaism which resulted in the establishment of the Christian Church in the first century AD. Thus, the aim of this paper is to outline Werfel's own theological concept by analyzing his play Paul among the Jews in order to confirm or to disprove the belief, which spread after the introduction of the play to audience in 1926,...
The concept of "Schuldenbremse" as an instrument against indebtedness in the Federal Republic of Germany
Říhová, Dominika ; Mlsna, Petr (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
As a result of the rapidly rising debt in recent years, the Federal Republic of Germany has decided to stop this unfavourable trend. The approval and acceptance of the so-called debt brake (Schuldenbremse) into the Basic Law in 2009 was also supported by the fact that the amount of public debt significantly exceeded the defined limit by the convergence criteria. With the financial crisis and the associated debt crisis within the eurozone, it turned out that the rules set out in the Stability and Growth Pact are being handled by a few states, and therefore some states have, due to their irresponsible fiscal policy, faced serious problems which are characterized by the inability to repay their obligations. Consequently, austerity measures had to be taken and at the same time, other EU countries have been invited to adjust their public finances to contribute to the consolidation of Economic and Monetary Union. As a result, debt brakes or other measures were then embedded in national legislation to prevent further crises. The German debt brake is a set of seven constitutional laws, where the main assumption is the annual setting of balanced budgets, or balanced income and expenditure, both at federal and state level, in order to prevent new further indebtedness. It was stipulated that the state budget...
The Attitude of Roman-Catholic Church towards Delors' initiative "Heart and Soul for Europe"
Kubiš, Vojtěch ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
Aim of this thesis is to analyse causes of reserved stance of the Roman Catholic Church towards Delors' initiative Heart and Soul for Europe. Research comes out from initial presumption that engagement of the Chuch in the initiative could be beneficial for Her. With respect to John Paul's II appeal to Western secularised society to return back to its Christian roots, Pope could have perceived Delors' initiative as an appropriate opportunity how to promote Catholic teaching in European policies. However, the Roman Catholic Church has not officially joined the initiative which was due to two reasons: Firstly, Pope strongly adhered to the principle of separation spiritual issues from European policies. Spiritual issues should be administered by the Church, not European institutions. Secondly, for the Catholic Church, Delors' initiative was also problematic from the perspective of the set-up of the dialogue. The dialogue was grounded on multi-level meetings (both within national and supranational bodies) based on wide consensus-seeking debate. Such way of dialogue was hard to embrace by the Catholic Church, which worked more authoritatively within its hierarchical structure. Therefore, it would be very complicated for the Church to adapt on such form of dialogue and effectively promote its teaching....
The Architecture of the Viennese and Budapest Parliament as a Reflection of Changes in the Political Climate
Fischerová, Ema ; Pelánová, Anita (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
The bachelor thesis "The Architecture of the Viennese and Budapest Parliament as a Reflection of Changes in the Political Climate" deals with the relationship between architecture and political changes of the second half of the 19th century, the time of birth of the so-called modern European nations. Political, economic and social changes have been reflected both in the style and in the decorative program of a number of parliamentary buildings. The thesis examines on the example of the architecture of the Viennese and Budapest parliamentary buildings, whether and how the new political and national arrangement and its associated ambitions were reflected in the architecture of the buildings. The Parliament building, which is a proof of the fundamental political and social changes, has become the announcer of these ambitions and their program. This legacy is expressed in the architectural layout, choice of style and decorations. The aim of the thesis is to compare the two Parliaments, so it is conceived as a comparative case study. It is divided into two chapters dealing with the Viennese and the Budapest Parliaments in the context of the political situation of the state and the cities in which they are located. The thesis concludes that each of the examine buildings is in its architectural design and...
Housing Policy in the Federal Republic of Germany and Czechoslovakia in 1948/9-1960
Rambousek, Filip ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Konrád, Ota (referee)
The thesis analyses housing policy in the Federal Republic of Germany and Czechoslovakia in 1948/9-1960. The aim of the thesis is to verify the assumption, that whereas housing policy of the FRG can be considered as rather successful, that of Czechoslovakia was rather unsuccessful. In addition to that, the thesis aims at interpreting the success/failure with respect to 1) the factual political steps of the two regimes, 2) the level of economic development and demographic trends, 3) the traditions of housing policies before 1948/9 and 4) the situation in housing sector immediately after WWII. The successfulness of housing policy is derived from its results in realm of dwelling construction, financial affordability and quality of housing. The methodological section contains a theoretical classification of the two political and social systems and a definition of housing policy and criteria of the comparison. Following two chapters analyse housing policy traditions before 1948/9 and housing policy of the two states in 1948/9-1960. In the latter case, before anything else, the chapter introduces the institutional framework, main actors and the most important legislation. However, the comparison as such is rather based on results of the respective housing policies. These are - in the last section -...
