The representation of gender of ICT professionals mediated by Czech daily MF Dnes and monthly magazine Elle in 1996 and 2002
Vostal, Bohumil ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Wolák, Radim (referee)
This thesis uses feminist theories and concepts of representation and stereotypes to examine the representation of gender of ICT professionals in two periodicals - a medium-sizes "Serious" newspaper Mladá fronta Dnes and a women's life-style magazine Elle. The main purpose of the thesis was to perform the first analysis of representation of ICT professionals in media in the Czech Republic. The gender issue in this field of media representation has never been explored before in the Czech Republic. The thesis incorporates results from the years 1996 (before the massive proliferation of the Internet in the Czech Republic) and 2002 (when the massive use of Internet has really taken off). It examines news and feature magazine texts, illustrations, photos and cartoons. Content-analysis results revealed a much greater proportion of males than females in both content and illustrations. The hypothesis that "field of ICT will be represented as a masculine domain - this the masculinities will prevail in field of ICT" was confirmed. At the same time, the research indicated that an analysis of a more diversified sample of earlier Czech and Czechoslovak media sources is necessary in order to provide a more complex view of representation of male and femal professionals in the ICT field. Further research could focus on the...

The change of referring about the Green Party
Král, Martin ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The topic of the thesis is "The change of referring about the Green Party" with the subordinate title "The frequency of the texts appearance about the Green Party in a press before and after five percent of the electoral preferences". The form of this thesis is the quantitative analysis of the content of the defined sample that is composed of two monitored Czech daily newspapers: Mlada fronta Dnes and Pravo. The time period under review is appointed for two six-month intervals. The former interval starts on April 2005 and ends by the breaking Convention of the Green Party on 24th September 2005 where Mr. Martin Bursik was called to the chair of the party. The latter interval continues after Convention and lasts till the end of March 2006. There is also another breaking point when the electoral preferences of the party have approached the five percent limit on January 2006 for the first time (this minimal limit is needed for gaining the Chamber of Deputies' chairs in the Chamber elections). The work has proved that there is not a significant change of referring after the Chairmanship change, but after another point: reaching the five percent limit of preferences as much more important breaking point. The frequency of the texts appearance has increased after that point approximately three times. In respect of...
Interactive narrative in the era of the digital storytelling
Kohutová, Radka ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
Stories are the cornerstone of common cultural understanding, creativity, and even socialisation and language. They surround us and stimulate us, entertain us, engage us, and even horrify us. We tell them every day and even participate in and create them just by living our lives and interacting with others. Being human simply means being part of a narrative on our journeys through life-right from infancy with the exposure to fairy-tales that afford us the chance to understand and decode our first stories along with language that introduces us to basic concepts like right and wrong. In fact, Tilley claims that "We are socialized through narrative forms, which offer stories to moderate behaviour ('Don't do that or...'), to develop language ('Mary, Mary, quite contrary...'), to engage the imagination ('Beware the wolf in the forest...') or to make us laugh ('This little piggy went to market...')." (Tilley, 1992: 53) Here is also where we are first introduced to the traditional structure and organizing principles behind the phenomenon of storytelling-narrative. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Analysis of the means of communication and self-presentation of Czech parliamentary parties in 2004, before and after the Czech Republic joined the European Union
Škývarová, Soňa ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
Since the overall topic of my diploma thesis is political communication, I focused my attention on Czech parliamentary political parties and their internal communication as well as their public communication strategies. To limit the scope of my research to a reasonable size, I selected year 2004 because three elections were held that year: European Parliament elections, Senate elections, and local authority elections. The exact topic of this thesis is "Analysis of the Means of Communication and Self-Presentation of Czech Parliamentary Parties in 2004, Before and After the Czech Republic Joined the European Union". There are three basic components of my thesis: the theoretical part exploring the notion of political communication, the descriptive part dealing with the political system of the Czech Republic in the given year, and finally the analysis of the communication methods of the selected parties. My research was carried out in several phases. I studied thoroughly my subject and formulated definitions and drew graphs to capture the notion of political communication. I defined it as acts carried out by political actors, both inside and outside of the political organization. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Media Representation of CzechTek 2005
Krásenská, Tereza Magdalena ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis is devoted to the CzechTek 2005 topic and the way it was presented in Tachovsky denik and Mlada fronta Dnes. More specifically it describes the period between July 27, 2005 and August 8, 2005. We tried to answer the question concerning this event coverage objectiveness. That means we decided to find out whether the event representation and following thematically wider debate were unbiased or rather biased, and if so in what direction and for the benefit of which participant or opinion. We also studied whether and how regional or global characteristics of a given media influenced possible biased coverage. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Distorted cartogram of virtual world of Czech newspapers
Podzimková, Gabriela ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
This article, entitled "Distorted Cartogram of Virtual World of Czech Newspapers", examines a coverage of international news by two dailies. The basic research question was, which countries are covered most. The presented study attempts to identify which countries dominate international news, and explain why this countries attract so big attention of editors (or gatekeepers). The research activity was focused on the application of a quantitative content analysis by Bernard Berelson. But the analysis of examined newspapers Blesk and Mlada fronta DNES was focused not only on a number of coverage but also a size of articles dedicated to particular countries. Next variables was source of news, and presence of graphic supplements. Interpretation of results is based on a study of Galtung and Ruge about the structure of foreign news and news values and on a world system theory. Some of the results agree with previous findings. It shows that elite nations or core nations in the world system often dominante the flow of news and coverage in international communication. The results also confirm that geographical distance, economic ties and cultural affinity are not strong factors deciding, whether a international news event will be covered or not. Analysis of news sources shows, that examined newspapers rely most on...
The Myth of Beauty in TV Advertising
Chrtková, Kristýna ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
The thesis tries to reveal the forms attained by the myth of female beauty in television commercials. It is based on the modern mythology by R. Barthes and on the theory of the social construction of reality by P. Berger and T. Luckmann, who claim that people themselves have created a certain social order, rules and meaning around themselves, and therefore everything around us is some sort of social construct. This is also how the myth of female beauty reproduced by the media is viewed. The work captures the development of the myth of beauty and various perspectives on its origin, form and the research connected with it, in particular the views of American feminist N. Wolf and French philosopher G. Lipovetsky. On the basis of the theoretical findings of semiotics, and the approach of F. de Saussure, CH. S. Peirce, L. Hjelmslev and most importantly the mythology of R. Barthes, the thesis uncovers, with the help of the semiotic analysis method, the everyday myth of female beauty reproduced by television commercials. It notes the role of women in these commercial messages and their forms, with the afore-mentioned authors' theoretical starting points. At the same time, the work aims to capture the various forms of the myth of female beauty in three television commercial categories. The category of...
