Lukáč, Martin ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Bitušíková, Alexandra (referee)

Besides the theoretical passages, the paper consists of an empirical part (not only as a section describing the field research in the form of a case study), suggests the use of chronicles in practice, and in conclusion seeks to explain and present a comparative synthesis. Following the textual core, a broader base of appendices has been prepared, consisting of both a chronicles bibliography and a direct transcript of contemporary legislative measures concerning chronicles writing in the Czech-Slovak geographical area from the establishment of the first Czechoslovak Republic to the present. Paulik, Róza ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Biegel, Richard (referee) ; Takács, Ádám (referee) ; Turgeon, Laurier (referee)
Key words: Prague, Budapest, guidebook, heritage trail, socialist heritage, built heritage Abstract: The thesis focuses on the heritagization of the socialist heritage: how the representation of socialist heritage has changed over years since the emergence of the socialist modernist architecture in East-Central Europe and how the approach towards socialist heritage is currently changing in the wake of the heritagization process. An asymmetrical comparative analysis of Prague and Budapest highlights the similarities and differences in the two cities' history, particularly in the socialist era. The choice of the cities was based on the facts that both cities are historical capitals, and neither Budapest's nor Prague's old town was changed dramatically during the Socialist period. The research deals with the heritagization process of socialist heritage from two angles: it combines analytical and practical aims. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the heritagization process of socialist heritage, the history of guidebooks and the emergence of heritage trails as important part of the new tourism approach. On the analytical level, the thesis focuses on the visual analysis of the presentation of socialist architecture in guidebooks and the promotion for the socialist heritage before and after the change...

The Troubles on the Walls. Murals in Northern Ireland and Their Role in the Ethno-political Tensions from the 1960s to Present
Halama, Vojtěch ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Ira, Jaroslav (referee)
(in English): The thesis deals with murals of Northern Ireland and their role in the ethno-political conflict (1969-1998) and the post-conflict transformation (1998-2016). It examines them as tools of "ideological war" with purpose of influencing the way in which members of the communities perceive reality, thus gaining their support for the activity of the movement or organisation which stands behind the mural. Mural painting is set in three contexts. Firstly, the thesis analyses the inter-group dynamics of both Northern Ireland communities, the dominant identities and ideologies. It argues that just as the Troubles are not a clash of two homogenic blocks, the murals cannot be understood as "people's art" created by the community as such. Secondly, it looks at murals in context of symbolic expressions in Northern Ireland's public space, investigates its territorial function and means of not only reflecting the reality through specific psychocultural or ideological explanation, but also further spreading this vision of reality. Thirdly, it considers the mural painting tradition as a dynamic process that developed through the course of the conflict and after, and examines this development from the military imagery of the 1980s to the re-imaging process of the post-conflict era.

Schlosser, Ludovic Bernard Nicolas ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Takács, Ádám (referee) ; Ducreux, Marie Elizabeth (referee) ; Graber, Frédéric (referee)
in English Germany has a long history of political fragmentation, with local and regional identities playing a crucial role in the making of Germanhood. In the last decades, historical scholarship has depicted the process of rallying local identities to the national cause. Dealing with this issue is essential because it shows the variety of the concept of Heimat [home or local homeland]1 in various territories of imperial Germany. Nevertheless, this process on the local level was not yet thoroughly examined in the case of the Giant Mountains' region before the First World War. Due to to its geographical position and the strong local cohesion shaping the homeland, this case study enables to further such historical researches, which often concentrates on the German historical regions, and not on the study of a local territory shaped by tourism. The object of the following thesis is to question the meanings assigned to the notion of Heimat in the Silesian Giant Mountains for the local activists and inhabitants, and thus, to write the history of the construction of Heimat. By using a methodology based upon different disciplines (respectively, the French "géohistoire", literary theory, sociology), the research analyses many phenomena attached to other and recent historiographic domains, such as...

Uçar, Mehmet Yiğitcan ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Špačková, Eva (referee)
in English The idea of gated communities was coined in the USA in 1970s and was a result of the post-modern period and suburbanization. During modernization, cities had gone through social, cultural, political, and economical revisions. Consequently, business and residential areas in the city continued to evolve and create new forms. Following this period gated communities offered new understanding of life, security, relations, and status. Subsequently, the phenomenon has rapidly spread all around the world after the 1980s. Istanbul was introduced to the idea of gated communities in 1980s as a result of globalization by following a new vision of a Global City. Being the historical, cultural, and economic center of Turkey, Istanbul holds a great value in terms of social and economical investments. Following the international neoliberal economic trends, Istanbul has attracted many investors and a large labor force. Consequently, the rising demand of housing and business areas invigorated the real estate market in Istanbul, and gated communities were seen as a modern way of housing. As a result, a variety of gated communities were built in Istanbul to meet this new demand. In this research, the social and cultural reasons for livıng in the gated communities and their impacts towards to its residents...

Savoglu, Mustafa ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee) ; Sherman, Tamah (referee)
As a multilingual and multicultural island, Cyprus has been segregated based on religion, identities, communities, and nationalities. In 1974, this segregation became a physical division of the island. After twenty-nine years of division, in 2003 April 23rd , the borders or in other words, the check-points were opened, and the two biggest communities of the island; Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, have been put in contact again. The phenomenon that the both communities were put in contact again also brought the question of language along with.
