Role of school libraries in development of media literacy in the Czech Republic

This diploma thesis examines the possibilities of involving school librarians and information specialists in the process of growth in media literacy at Czech schools. The theoretical part of the thesis briefly introduces the general issues of media education and media literacy in our country and abroad, while the practical part of the thesis based on its own research, focuses on a particular target group - Prague secondary schools ("gymnázium"). Using a questionnaire and five case studies conducted at selected secondary schools in Prague, it conducts a survey of the current situation of implementation of media education in the Czech Republic. The end of the thesis deals with some ideas of how to involve graduates of the Institute of Information Studies and Librarianship in teaching media education according to the American model of a "teacher librarian".
Information literacy and information needs of students of colleges of education and role of information education in universities

The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part deals with the concept of information literacy, its development, and its broader context of information society. Furthermore, it presents selected initiatives, recommendations, concepts and standards of UNESCO, International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, American Library Association and Czech representatives of the Association of Libraries of Czech Universities, always in relation to education, information education and lifelong learning. The practical part of the thesis describes author's own questionnaire survey that was conducted at the same time at three faculties - in České Budějovice, Plzeň and Ústí nad Labem. The survey looks into general students' awareness of information resources and their use. In addition, interviews with librarians are provided. These interviews illustrate the real situation and conditions for teaching information literacy provided by the faculty.
Comparison of selected Czech and Slovak academic libraries : on the example of Charles University in Prague and Comenius University in Bratislava

(in English) The goal of the thesis is to describe, evaluate and compare the present state of university libraries at the Charles University in Prague and Comenius University in Bratislava. The first chapter briefly describes the present state of Czech and Slovakian university libraries, their anchorage in the laws of the given state and also deals with societies associating the university libraries. The second chapter describes history, present and prospects of three selected faculties of Charles University and Comenius University (Faculty of Art, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) and also the buildings where the faculties are located are described. The third chapter already follows up the libraries of the selected faculties, their history, services, personnel, space descriptions, and their promotion among the general public etc.. The fourth and fifth chapter presents the main body of the work. These chapters include assessment of the questionnaire survey, between to the directors of the selected libraries, and comparison of these libraries on the basis of the survey and other obtained data. Application of Integrated Library System Aleph 500 in academic libraries in Czech Republic

The master thesis describes and evaluates application of Integrated Library System Aleph 500 (in following text ILS Aleph) in academic libraries in Czech Republic. First chapter describes theoretical requirements at automated library systems for academic libraries. Apart of general requirements are described new technical trends as tools of Web 2.0. Second chapter brings full description of ILS Aleph with specification of each system's module. Third chapter is dedicated to implementation of ILS Aleph in Czech academic libraries. Characteristic of each institutional implementation contains three parts: characteristic of institution, describing of implementation and description of institutional OPACs. Last chapter is dedicated to empiric study of application of ILS Aleph in academic libraries in Czech Republic. ILS Aleph users are examined at three levels (library users, librarians, system administrators). Empiric study was made at group of Prague academic libraries that implemented ILS Aleph.
The Place of the Library within the Organisational Framework of Universities in the Czech Republic and USA: A Comparison Study

The aim of this master thesis was to describe and asses the place of the library within the organizational framework of universities in the Czech Republic and USA. Aim of this thesis is to describe and evaluate the current position of library in organizational structure of colleges and universities in the Czech Republic and USA. First chapter sums up the current situation. For Czech universities in public school sector the corresponding elementary data, relevant legislative scope and position in organizational structure of public universities are emphasized and presented. For US universities the current status is presented with a particular example of five public universities. Second chapter is about current trends in evolution of university libraries in Czech Republic and USA with an emphasis on position in university or college structure. Third chapter is the essential part of the thesis. It contains report about survey performed with representatives of Czech public universities and representatives of given libraries. Last chapter presents parallel research done in USA.

This thesis focuses its attention on librarian profession. It follows the development of librarian profession since its beginning to the present. The thesis is concerned with prestige of the profession and its image. It represents some of the Czech librarian awards and deals with their holders. It introduces leading figures of Czech and world culture, who worked in library during their lives. Finally, the thesis seeks to capture the image of a librarian in literature and film.
OPAC of ALEPH System

This bachelor thesis presents analysis and evaluation of online catalog of integrated library system ALEPH, which was made after studying Web OPAC manual of this system and gathering information from practical testing of catalogs of National Library of Czech Republic and Regional Library of Karlovy Vary. In the first chapter, there is introduced and defined Online Public Access Catalog and its main principles and also its history is presented. In next chapters, there are described features and services of OPAC of ALEPH system followed by evaluation of its functionality in chosen libraries, which is based on practical exercises. Thesis deals with all services, that are provided by an online catalog. In the conclusion, there is summarized all information gathered and there are also presented possible extentions and improvements of OPAC of this system in the future.

Problem of catalog objectives in digital environment: development and trends in building library catalogs from the bibliographic point of view PhDr. Barbora Drobíková Abstract The aim of the thesis is to explore current trends in building library catalogs from the bibliographic point of view. It focuses on formulation and exploration of trends in bibliography which may influence the library catalogs in near future. The introductory part defines several basic terms. It deals with the catalog objectives and methodological and technological questions in brief. Larger chapters describe the conceptual models FRBR, FRAD and FRSAD and studies which bring these models. These studies show a new view on objectives of bibliographic and authority records, therefore on library catalogs objectives too. This part is closed by an own analysis of these models, their comparison with the object-oriented model FRBRoo including a proposal of FRAD's and FRSAD's implementation into an object-oriented form. Next chapters focus on the relation of bibliography and semantic web and especially on questions connected with a change of bibliographic paradigma and paradigma of the bibliographic control which are to occur with new semantic web technologies. Options of "Employing" of Volunteers in Czech Public Libraries

The main target of this diploma thesis is to focus on the area of volunteers in libraries and librarianship, mainly in the Czech Republic and try to summarize the voluntary tasks or services in these public institutions. Firstly, the text tries to explain the main ground and principles of volunteering, also the historical background and terminology. Secondly, the thesis deals with the voluntary network, their centres, reflexion, motivation and legislation. The main part focuses on the comparison of German and Czech faces of volunteering in the libraries and the results of questionnaire done in the chosen Czech libraries are presented and commented. The conclusion includes all received knowledge and information and outlines the potential possibilities of the usage of volunteers in libraries and public sector in the Czech Republic (including suggested working tasks volunteers can be used for).
