North-South gas corridor - the way how to provide an energy security of EU in accordance with a long-term policy of EU
Stráník, Tomáš ; Balabán, Miloš (advisor) ; Binhack, Petr (referee)
This work will try to analyse, if a project of Nort-South gas corridor is a really effective solution for EU and if this project really supports an effort to achieve a common energy security of EU. Work is based on hypothesis that natural gas and significant difference between member states of EU in dependence on Russian gas are the main problems which complicate efforts to achieve a common energy security of EU. Project, which could support efforts to achieve a common energy security of EU must be a project which could assure a diversification of gas routes and diversification of gas sources without weakening of energy security of any of EU member states. This work will try to analyse if existing gas projects (North Stream, South Stream, Nabucco and North- South gas corridor are really realistic projects which meet energy needs of member states of EU and long-term policy of EU. This work will try to prove, that North- South gas corridor is f the project, which really brings diversification of gas sources and gas routes and existence of this project will have also positive influence on efforts to achieve a common energy security of EU.
Emergence of the Common Energy Policy of the EU in the context of EU-Russia Energy Cooperation
Radová, Ivana ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Binhack, Petr (referee)
This master thesis The emergence of the Common energy policy of the EU in the context of the EU-Russia energy cooperation aims to answer the question of whether Russia with its aggressive energy policy (gas crisis, gas pipeline projects) stands behind the EU's inability to advance a strong Common energy policy despite all its efforts. By analysing the member states' behaviour in relation to the key development in the energy field, we will be able to assess Russia's influence. The thesis will then demonstrate that it is the divergent national policies of the member states that stand behind the EU's inability to push forward a Common energy policy. The member states, in the pursuit of the maximization of benefits, support the Common energy policy only if it aligns with their national interests. The categorization of the member states based on their dependence on Russian gas and the size of their gas markets in relation to Russian gas exports will provide broadly representative conclusions about the member states behaviour towards the Common energy policy based on these two variables.
Development of energy mix and energy security of the Czech Republic, limits of self-sufficiency and future expectations
Čermáková, Anna ; Binhack, Petr (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
The main objektive of the thesis is to analyze the Czech Republic's energy security with regard to a composition of the energy mix. Evaluation of energy mix's security is performed according to the koncept of energy security, ability to secure plenty of reliable and economical supplies which do not pose a threat to the living environment. In this thesis, energy security is evaluated from several perspectives, i.e. from a perspective of legislation, national energy policy, and planning and dissection of individual energy sources. In this study, the author utilizes her knowledge of the Czech energy legislation, national documents concerned with energy security, and domestic as well as international statistics illustrating a progress of energy portfolio since 2003. Evaluation of individual energy sources will include data about the source's locations in the Czech Republic and its exploitation, export, import and domestic consumption.
Czech Republic and its connection to new LNG terminals - strengthening of the gas security
Prouza, Petr ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Binhack, Petr (referee)
Master thesis "Czech Republic and its connection to new LNG terminals - strengthening of the gas security" examines the level of gas security in the Czech Republic. Dependency of the Czech Republic on gas supplies from foreign countries is almost 100 %. Russian federation is dominant supplier with roughly 75 % of the supplies. High dependency on one exporter is considered hazardous from energy security perspective. The Czech government should strive to change and improve this situation. The diversification is considered as a useful tool to improve the gas security. Currently there are new gas projects built in neighboring countries, which may influence energy security of the Czech Republic. The study researches the impact of these new projects on the Czech Republic. Namely we focused on gas pipeline Nord Stream and its Czech connection Gazelle, which will connect North Germany and Bavaria through the Czech Republic. Second project is gas network called "the North - South Corridor" connecting Baltic and Adriatic Sea. The North - South corridor may be potentially linked up to the new LNG terminals Świnoujście in Poland or Adria in Croatia. Furthermore, there are long-lasting plans to open new "South" gas route from Caspian region to Europe. The main goal of this thesis is to explore real...
The Influence of Natural Resource Dependency on US Foreign Policy. Case Study: the Persian Gulf War
Ducháč, Tomáš ; Žídková, Markéta (advisor) ; Binhack, Petr (referee)
The goal of this work is to analyze what role the dependence on natural resources played in US foreign policy in the Persian Gulf War. Natural resources and especially oil were inseparable component of the US economic development from the second part of the 20th century. Regardless of the continuous effort of government administration the US was not able reduce its dependency on import of foreign resources. The reliance on world market and the effort to control its dependency through the control of natural resources located beyond the US boarders led to the projection of these issues to the US foreign policy. The first chapter of the work is theoretical and deals with the views of particular authors on the determinants of US foreign policy in regard to natural resources. The situation of the US was characterized by hegemonic position, which enabled the US to pursue its interest on a global scale. The second chapter analyses the development of US natural resource dependency in respect to the US economy from the beginning of the 20th century to the Persian Gulf War. The chapter identifies the most important natural resources and the strategic significance of the Persian Gulf. The final chapter evaluates the role natural resources had on America's decision to enter the war.
Expansion strategy of Russia's Gazprom into European market and European counteraction policy
Khayrullaev, Andrey ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; Binhack, Petr (referee)
Author: Andrey Khayrullaev Title of the Thesis: EXPANSION STRATEGY OF RUSSIA'S GAZPROM INTO EUROPEAN MARKET AND EUROPEAN COUNTERACTION POLICY Year of defence: 2012 ABSTRACT In the period of globalization, energy security has substantial implications for the mutual security of supply and demand. It is dependent on several factors as security of supply, resilience and interdependence. As the result, multi-national corporations controlling wide energy resources are becoming more and more involved in the international politics - the situation when supplier is not just one of the contractual parities but "tool" for political pressure of its host state. Russian Gazprom, which operates on European natural gas market, is the vivid example of such situation. The research project is based on a deep review of relevant literature sources using the data analyzing, comparative analysis and the case study methods. The main research questions are the following: are European "fears" justified and what are the perspectives for Europe to decrease its dependency on Russian natural gas export? The main conclusions to be drawn from this study are that Europe has full grounds to be against growing dependence on Gazprom, taking into account Gazprom's involvement into politics, its aggressive actions directed toward prevention of...
The impact of EU on the integration's development GCC
Paščenková, Jana ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Binhack, Petr (referee)
The thesis researches how European Union (EU) influences the integration of countries in less developed regions of the world. First, the general potential of EU in this area is examined. Its practical realization is verified on the example of cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The first part deals with the political and economical changes in the world since the end of 80s, which brought a wave of liberalization in world trade, an opening of developing economies and the birth of new phenomena, especially new regionalism and interregionalism. The second chapter addresses the European Foreign Policy and its approach to cooperation with developing countries. The part about security stresses the effort of EU to spread peace, prosperity and stability without the use of military force (principle of soft diplomacy). In economical dimension, the gradual development from nonreciprocal cooperation with developing states to the effort to establish free trade areas is shown. EU tries to help its partners with social changes and economical reforms through trade agreements, consultations and other kinds of cooperation. The third chapter applies these findings to GCC. Clearly visible is the inspiration of EU during the establishing of GCC and during the creating of its institutions. It is shown...
Presidency of the Council of the EU and energy security. Comparison of Austrian and Czech EU Presidency
Králík, Zbyněk ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Binhack, Petr (referee)
The diploma thesis "Předsednictví Rady EU a energetická bezpečnost" (The presidency and the energy security) deals with factors relevant for the presidency of the EU. The current debate is highly focused on the size of the presiding country, which leaves very little space for an alternative explanation. The main task of this thesis is therefore to enrich the debate. The main method is comparing the two presidencies on the basis of the concept of energy security. The energy security was a relevant topic due to the context of the presidencies given by the interruptions in gas supply from Russia. Both countries differed in three relevant factors: the foreign orientation (relationship to Russia), the presidency style and the type of coordination mechanism. This diploma thesis tests the relevance of these factors on the presidency.
Analysis of Natural Gas Market of Uzbekistan
Bozhko, Aleksey ; Binhack, Petr (referee) ; Aslan, Emil (advisor)
The research is going to provide an analysis of Uzbek and Central Asian natural gas markets, demonstrating the advantages and disadvantages that Central Asian Republics (CARs) have in contrast with each other. The infrastructure and pricing constraint persistent to the landlocked Central Asian region is discussed as well. The paper applies SWOT model for the country based comparative analysis with the particular emphasis on Uzbekistan and insights gained from the SWOT model, as the part of opportunity section, are further utilized for demonstrating opportunities available for expanding production and export of Uzbek natural gas. Even though Kazakhstan has the most significant natural gas reserves among the CARs, country still cannot catch up with the production levels of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The internal demand of Kazakh market for natural gas is much lower than the production capacity of the republic and this creates an opportunity of becoming a significant exporter of natural gas in the short-term period. 95-96 percent of natural gas consumed in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is imported from Uzbekistan. The natural gas produced in Uzbekistan covers the internal market demand, moreover, considering that the average annual production growth during the period of 1990-2008 has constituted 3.8 percent,...
