Comics of the Czech magazine Ohníček in the period of 1968-71: semiotic analysis
Řezníková, Ivana ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (referee)
The topic of the thesis is the genre of comics in the Czech magazine Ohníček during the early period of normalization: the text is based on a detailed analysis of eleven comics that were published in the magazine between years 1968-71 (season 19-21). As far as the genre criteria are concerned, the analysed comics came closer to adventurous stories that were very popular in the 60/70s. At the same time, the original visual expression changed so that it was more suitable to child readers. Three of the analysed comics are comic series where the particular episodes are connected to each other by an adventurous narrative storyline. The eight others are comic strips with the narrative type of gag or fable. When examining the particular comics, the focus was on several aspects: the use of language, visual expression, story articulation and specific distinctive aspects. Differences in those aspects made the comics mutually different and deviating from the classics of genre. Both the graphic form and the story line of the analysed comics were determined by the fact that they were published in a children magazine. As results of the analysis, hero types and the resemblance of the fiction world according to the narrative type are descript and a comparison with European and American comics tradition is given.

The research is based on the ethnographic research of Kateřina Nedbálková. With the help of her analysis I defined the analytical categories, into which I divided the research. I analyzed selected data and from those I deduced relevant conclusions, I answered my research questions and evaluated the given objectives.
Czechoslovakia in 1968-1977 and its image in serial Vyprávěj
Menšíková, Iva ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Dominik, Šimon (referee)
My dissertation is dedicated to the problem of media construction of history in the case of the television series Vyprávěj. It concentrates on how much the series' adaptation of historical events and normal life in the era of normalization between 1968 and 1977 fits reality by comparing concrete historical events and key societal activities with their adaptation in the series. The work focuses on three special categories - fundamental historical events of that era, people's normal life and the lives of dissidents, with a final objective of finding out how well the series' adaptation matches the true history of the normalization era. First, I delimit the problem of television series in general and address the concept of seriality on the basis of the professional literature. Then I focus on the media construction of reality and representation history in culture, especially in television series. Because the series Vyprávěj addresses recent history, I also mention collective memory. After that I concentrate only on the series Vyprávěj and the problem of normalization in Czechoslovakia, in which era the story takes place. The second part of the dissertation is dedicated to concrete events of the era - how they really happened according to the professional literature and narration of contemporary...

The diploma thesis "Production Ideology of the television serial Proč bychom se netopili" deals with the production process in the making of a television serial. The initial focus was on the formation of one of the main characters, Keny, and on his position in the production as a whole. The thesis builds upon the ideas developed by cultural studies. These combine the structuralist approach inspired by the linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure with the ideological approach based mainly on the thought of Louis Althusser. The production process is enquired into by Elena Levine who distinguishes five key categories of production. The research section which represents the core of the present diploma thesis is methodologically formed by grounded theory. It is based on qualitative interviews with those in key positions with respect to the production process. In the analytical section, the thesis operates with Roland Barthes's concept of mythologies. In the interviews, the informants make reference to the category of production routine, of the myth concerning the ideal "waterman" (the main character Keny being a symbol of this myth), of the production conditions in Czech Television and of the viewer who appears to be the ultimate instance. These categories constitute the mythology of the exceptional which...
