Backpack, hiking boots and mascara: Analysis of women independent travelling from the perspective of anthropology of tourism

The diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the gender aspects of women travelling and experience of women travellers, who set out to the non-Europe destinations on their own. The thesis is based on in-depth interviews with women travellers and analyze how these journeys are important to them. The thesis tries to point out that women's solo travelling directly effects their biography as well as career and status of these female travellers. Women independent travelling is introduced as the dynamic process, by means of which they acquire or verify the gender power and abilities, applicable to their personal life and work. Using the concepts of feminist theories implemented on women's travelling, I try to show that this type of travelling is affected by history and prefers male travelling, which displaces the individual women's travelling on the edge of the social and scientific interest. This thesis is based on the anthropology of tourism, particularly on the study of backpacking and set the experience of the woman traveller in the frame of the rites of passage. Moreover the thesis contains the analysis of the public and media discourse, focused on the real case of two young women kidnapped in Pakistan. Media image of the most widespread new religious movements in czech republic

The main purpose of this thesis is to describe how the respectable Czech newspapers and news websites access to three major new religious movements in our country. Thus the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Grail Movement. In the theoretical part, I generally define the term "new religious movement", then I describe in detail the three above-mentioned movements. The following chapter deals with the relationship between media and new religious movements. The theoretical part is closed by describing the used methodologies. In the analytical part of this thesis I make discourse analysis of the chosen media messages. I mark out specific characteristics and roles that media attribute to the members of the examined new religious movements. I cite concrete passages from which these characteristics result. Simultaneously I refer to texts that relate to these characteristics. The results of the analysis I summarize and describe in the last chapter of the analytical part, in which I also present an overview of all the characteristics and roles that appeared in the media. The summary sums up the results of the analysis and evaluate whether the target of this work was filled.

Drawing on a feminist methodological approach, the work discusses how migrants may be perceived or treated differently based on gender, and how this impacts (or is impacted by) policies. In particular, one illustrative event, the closure of the Franco-Italian border in April 2011, is analyzed more deeply using the theory of domopolitics as introduced by William Walters. By tracing the history and the discourse about migration and integration from colonial times to the present, this event and other recent debates related to Mediterranean migration are contextualized. The Construction of "Dangerous dogs" in Blesk and Lidové noviny in the years 2001 and 2011

At the end of the 20th century the issue of so called "dangerous" dog breeds has become increasingly discussed in some European countries. These dogs are considered so threatening that some countries have decided to regulate or restrict their breeding by law. This thesis looks at the articles in Blesk tabloid and Lidové noviny daily newspaper in the years 2001 and 2011 and explores how the dangerous aspect of these breeds was constructed there. Through discourse analysis it investigates the image of "dangerous dogs" presented in these newspapers and what these representations imply. The results of the analysis confirm that all the selected materials explicitly construct the image of dangerous dogs and at the same time implicitly suggest the existence of their "positive" counterparts which helps drawing the line between "good" and "bad" dogs, and hence also between "good" and "bad" owners of the dogs. In all cases, it is apparent that the issue thematised on the level of dog breeds in fact charaterises the relation of man to the animal as well as the society. Discourse Analysis of Representation of the Greek Crisis in Wall Street Journal

This thesis analyzes media representation of Greek crisis in the Wall Street Journal at the time of parliamentary elections in Greece in June 2012. Using the method of critical discourse analysis the thesis characterizes the specific representation, while focusing on the representation of key actors, their relationships and the economic program called austerity. This thesis argues that the representation reflects the discourse of neoliberalism, it demonstrates that it legitimizes the austerity plan and it identifies the means of argumentation, on which the discourse draws.

The Role of Aggression in Human Evolution, 1963-2000. Authors, theories, contexts

Presented work is an overview of contemporary evolutionary biological theories of aggression, since the breakthrough works of Robert Ardrey and Konrad Lorenz from the 1960s and ending with contemporary evolutionary ethics of Robert Wright and Frans de Waal and also evolutionary anthropology, represented for example by Richard Wrangham. Work is highlighting the continuity of development of the theories and their placement into the context of evolutionary biology. In addition, it is dealing with critical analysis (in terms of discourse analysis) of these theories and their language, taking into account sociocultural influences acting on authors during their formation. It is the analysis of patterns of thinking, argumentation elements and strategies of authors, who deal with issues of the evolutionary background of the origin of human aggression. However, ambition of the second part is not the deconstruction of the theories. Contrarily it strives for positive, integrative approach. By categories of class, gender, race, etc. conditional misrepresentation (bias) of acquried data (e.g. by observation), their interpretation by authors themselves and their popularization, will be understood there as a factor entering into the assessment of theories, but it is not a priori considered as evidence of...

Lustration as a tool of political differentiaton in Czechoslovakia. Discourse analysis

The topic of this piece of work is lustrations in Czechoslovakia, or more precisely a discourse on this issue, which was carried on the ground of the Federal Assembly (FS) of the Czechoslovak Federal Republic (CSFR) in 1991. The piece of work combines methods of a discourse analysis and an analysis of the political and historical background, where the discussion unfolded. The bases for the analysis are the stenographic entries of the FS of Czechoslovakia from January to August 1991, the period from the start of negotiations of the lustrations of the deputies of FS themselves, up until the adoption of the lustration law. For the purpose of conducting a detailed study, a narrower corpus was compiled, containing utterances of the main participants of the period. Selection of the participants was conducted according to a key that strives for taking into account the partisan, ideological and personal plurality of opinions of the former Federal Assembly. The aim of this piece of work is to document in compliance with the particular utterances both the development, or more precisely the emergence of the discourse of this issue, and the nascent of the political identities, which at that time (not only) due to the lustrations, were constituted.

Narrative structures and discourse analysis as methods of ideology decoding in KCNA news

This thesis deals with methods of ideology decoding in news reports as analyzed in a selected sample of the Korean Central News Agency news - the most important information medium in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The narrative patterns theory is defined from a combination of various methodological approaches of narrative and discourse analysis. With this theory, two weeks of English on-line news are analyzed with regards to their language, text, and discourse level, seeking to reveal potentially ideological structures. As a result of this multistage analysis, several narrative patterns are proposed as possible scenarios for news storytelling and particular lexical, syntactic and rhetorical specifics of the researched materiál are described. Based on these results, the fictional world as narrated by the analyzed text is deconstructed. Also, the construction of the ideology as a set of means by which this world is organized is explained.

National Identity in the Propaganda of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (May 1945 - May 1946)

National legitimacy played in the politics of post-war Communist Party of Czechoslovakia an important role. The addressees of communist policy should primarily be "members of the nation." The subject of my research work in this way was the formulation of national identity and its role in the Communist politics in the first postwar year, especially the cultural field. For the conceptualization of the concept of propaganda in the Communist Party, I was inspired discourse analytical approaches that have helped me in exploring answers to the question of the role of Czech national identity in the propaganda of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.
