The Town Vimperk and Its Surroundings in Regard to the German Written Documents by the Princely Family of Eggenberg from the Second Half of the 17th Century. On the German Language in Bohemia.
Kříž, Václav ; Vodrážková, Lenka (advisor) ; Bok, Václav (referee)
The presented bachelor thesis deals with the textological analysis of five selected documents written in German and published by the office of the Eggenbergs in Český Krumlov between 1652-1695. In addition to that, it also attempts to add some new information about the local conditions in the Šumava town Vimperk and its near surroundings during the era of the administration of the Eggenberg family in the second half of 17th century. The structure of the thesis is presented by its two main parts, the historical one and the linguistic one. The first part of the thesis describes the Styrian dynasty of the Eggenbergs itself and its princely branch, acting from 1622 even in the area of the province of South Bohemia. At the same time, the exhibitors of the studied documents themselves, Anna Maria (1609-1680) and her son Johann Christian of Eggenberg (1641-1710), are introduced in detail. Subsequently, the situation in the town of Vimperk and in its surroundings between 1630 and 1719 is described and the activities and the production of offices during that period are also presented. The second part of the thesis focuses on the textological analysis of the external as well as of the internal characteristics of the chosen documents. On the basis of this textological analysis, the thesis tries to contribute to the...
Bautzen and Budyšin: Language Ideologies in the Capital City of Sorbs
Škrob, Jan ; Samek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Zandlová, Markéta (referee)
In this thesis, I attempt to describe and analyse language ideologies relevant in the specific situation of the Sorbian minority in the city of Bautzen (Sorbian: Budyšin) - a city with a clear German majority at the same time considered a cultural, social and political centre of Sorbs - with a special emphasis on links between language and nationalism. Focusing on these links, I also examine the specific role of language for maintainance of Sorbian national identity. I also view Sorbian language ideologies in the broader context of social and political relations in and around Bautzen, whereas I, among other topics, inquire into recently significant hatred of local German radical right towards the Sorbian minority. At the same time, I attempt to capture the power relations between German and Sorbian languages. Apart from the paradigm of language ideologies, I am also informed by works of certain poststructuralist authors, especially due to their emphasis on constructivism regarding identities and language mechanisms. Keywords: language, language ideologies, nationalism, language nationalism, identities, national identity, ethnicity, language and power, Sorbian, German, language and politics, language contact
Non-finite Verb Forms as Semipredicates in Russian, Czech and German. A Typological View

Title: Nonfinite Verb Forms as Semipredicates in Russian, Czech and German. A Typological View. Author: Jana Kocková Supervisor: doc. Dr. phil. Markus Giger Abstract: This research paper presents a comprehensive picture of nonfinite verb forms in Russian, Czech and German supported by a corpus analysis based on the parallel corpus InterCorp CNC. Equivalents of each of the nonfinite verb forms were analysed manually in each of the monitored languages. The data obtained served for typological classification focused on nonfinite verb forms as secondary predicates. Different frequencies of the individual forms and mutual competition of various means in language also indirectly result from the analysis. In Czech we may observe generally a strong tendency to express the semiprediaction by means of a finite verb form in a sentence structure. As regards non finite verb forms, the actively used forms are participle and verbal nouns, i.e. forms which relate to the existing partofspeech paradigms. Due to being inflectional they express explicitly syntactic relations. Czech uses the possibility to express the secondary predication by means that are not contrary to morphological regularities of the inflectional type. Russian uses actively all the nonfinite verb forms. A high...

Female translators as active stakeholders in the contact between the Czech and German languages in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century
Greňová, Martina ; Svoboda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Žárská, Monika (referee)
Greňová, Martina: Female translators as stakeholders in the contact between the Czech and German languages in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century Abstract (in English): The purpose of this thesis in the field of history of translation is to describe the role of women in the Czech lands in the translation process from German to the Czech language. We focus on the period between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. During this period, among other things, the status of women changed as well as the relationship between the Czech and German speaking population. When defining the new relationship between the two groups, translating into the Czech language played a crucial constitutive role. Our main research question is, whether and how women participated in this cultural process, and whether their involvement could eventually result in a professional career as a translator. Apart from that, there are also many other questions to be answered in relation to the historical context which had a major impact on the status and activities of women. For historical reconstruction of the period we apply the method of quantitative analysis of extant translations and directories. This data is supplemented by information from texts written by women themselves where they reflect on...

Reception of Czech literature in Spain considering the mediating role of German
Vavroušová, Petra ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Prokop, Josef (referee) ; Martino Alba, Pilar (referee)
The objective of the present doctoral thesis is to describe the reception of Czech literature in Spain between 1900 and 2015 with a special emphasis on German as a mediating language for translation between Czech and Spanish, placing Czech research of this phenomenon into a broad international context of investigating the role of languages and cultures in multilingual communities. The thesis further explores issues partially covered by previous research (Uličný 2005, Špirk 2011, 2014, Cuenca 2013). The theoretical part first provides a short historical context of both countries, commenting on their bilateral relations during the 20th century, analysing the publishing sector and describing the official censorship. It then provides a detailed investigation of indirect translations and introduces diverse methods in which they can be explored, highlighting the importance of paratextual material, that is paratexts (Genette 1982, 1987) and metatexts (Popovič 1975, 1983), and the influence of censorship and dominant ideology (Abellán 1980, 1982, 1987; Neuschäfer 1994). Methodologically, the present work relies on Czech and Slovak translation studies (Levý, Popovič) and the Spanish TRACE project (Rabadán, Merino). The empirical part uses the methodological tools of critical discourse analysis, author's...
South Tyrol: language use in public space
Rubriciusová, Alžběta ; Konrád, Ota (advisor) ; Kučera, Jaroslav (referee)
South Tyrol is an autonomous province, which belongs to the Italian Republic. Its territory is specific for several reasons. This is caused by the historical development and also by the fact that South Tyrol is a crossroad where the Germanic culture and language meets the Romanesque one. The citizens are usually bilingual. The language issue offers a large number of topics, which can be further examined. This thesis is focused on language use in the public sector nowadays. First, the historical context of the South Tyrolean question will be explained with focus on language because the current state results from past events. Second, I will explore three following areas of the public sector: communication with public administration, politicians and at school. The main emphasis will be again placed on language. Next, I will deal with the language model of South Tyrol. My goal is to try to answer this question: Is the described model functional, stable and possibly transferable?

PhDr. František Vrhel, CSc. 2015 Key Words and Abstract Key words: deixis; deictic perspective; linguistic categories; descriptive metalanguage; public space; social interaction; interpretive approach; mediated communication; mass media; ideologies; social identity; origo; situatedness; phatic function; Czech; German. Abstract: This thesis examines whether, and to what extent, deixis can be conceptualized as an interpretive principle of social interactions and communication. It addresses the question on both theoretical and empirical levels, analyzing samples of direct and mediated communication in Czech and German public space. In order to capture deictic phenomena by an adequate conceptual framework, I take some binary dichotomies of the descriptive metalanguage of linguistics and reconceptualize them as continuous scales. Using these scales, I explore the notional borders of the term "deixis." I further identify protosymbolic potential in deictic expressions as...
