Mexican critical reception of essays by Octavio Paz
De León Zamora, Lucía Amalia ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Forbelský, Josef (referee) ; Vydrová, Hedvika (referee)
The following thesis looks at the Hispano-American essay through the lens of essays by 1990-Nobel-Iaureate Octavio Paz (Mexico City, 1914-1998). Until recently the essay was not considered a literary form, for the three classical genres of epic, lyric, and drama excluded the essay. By studying Paz's essays--primarily El laberinto de la soledad (The Labyrinth of Solitude, 1950) and Posdata (Postdata, 1970)--in the context of their reception in Mexico, as well as touching on the Hispano-American tradition of the essay, this thesis traces the evolution of the essay as a literary genre. The history of the modem essay begins with Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592). In his work, Essais (1580), Montaigne, immersed in the humanism of his era, discovers his own voice, that of an individual. Montaigne's voice became possible largely because the unity of the Medieval communitarian way of life, throughout Europe, had fragmented. However, in Hispano-America, the essay did not emerge as a literary form until the nineteenth century, as countries throughout the region fought for independence from the empires of that time: Spain, North America, and France. The rupturing of empires, the fragmenting of a onceunified community--in both cases the essay emerges as a genre from disturbed circumstances. The critical voice of...

Matamorphosis of theoretical writing on African art in the 20th century
Bidlasová, Petra ; Winter, Tomáš (referee) ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor)
According to Polish journalist Riszard Kapuscinski Africa is "a veritable ocean, a separate planet, a varied, immensely rich cosmos". The mere size and complexity of the African continent, consisting of many hundreds of tribes and dozens of states, mirrors in its culture and art and it renders impossible to reduce the modern history of African art to fit into one thesis. This fact made me concentrate on changes which occurred during the 20th century within the field of theoretical writing on African art [see Introduction]. Europeans have shown their interest in Africa for thousands years since the antiquities, starting as early as the 5th century B.C. with Herodotus, followed by Arabic merchants, who crossed Sahara and described with astonishment growing medieval empires of Central Africa: Ghana, Mali and Songhai. First period of greater interest is connected with 15th century European sailors, who were sent by their respective emperors to find gold, slaves and sale opportunities. This still leaves Europeans mainly on the African coast entering into the heart of Africa only after the colonial incursion in the late 19th century. An enormous amount of artworks was brought to Europe from Africa during the years and decades to come after the Berlin conference 1884-85, which almost deprived some tribes from...

The new age of the old self - the New Age spirituality in the light of Advaitic teaching
Masojídek, Milan ; Matějů, Martin (referee) ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor)
This work deals with a phenomenon of New Age movement and summarizes its fundamental visions. Afterwards these visions are interpreted in context of spiritual teaching and practicing of Advaita Vedanta. This approach enables studying of New Age spirituality from existential point of view and one gains an idea about its position not only in terms of eternal contemporary selfsearching but also more complex in terms of specific situation of modern man and his culture due to culturologic perspective. New Age within the scope of such approach appears as an environment where one can live more spiritually and which can be good base on a journey of deep spiritual understanding due to emphasis on individual selfsearching, freedom, internal responsibility and idea of Unity. However, for this seems to be necessary to step out of limited and comfortable New Age category - if it is comfortable mainly for ego and its needs, valuables and interrelated category of limited individual thinking. It is a level on the journey of understanding which has to be leaved as well as "searching" itself provided that the understanding would be fully realized. Such conclusion challenges deeper culturologic reflection of category or more likely of manifestations or statuses of odd principle of conscious existence and their relation to the...

The piano music by Čestmír Gregor
Veličková, Magda ; Gregor, Vít (advisor) ; Palkovská, Jana (referee)
In my thesis, I introduce a complete list of piano works by Cestmír Gregor, a contemporary Czech composer of modern classical music. 1 have tried to define his compositional techniques and sources of inspiration by analysing the individual pieces of music. I have found that the major features of the author's highly unique style are polyphonic thinking, the development of motives from small nuclei, expressive themes, plastic tunes, inventive work with rhythm, and the absence of a tonal centre which he compensates for by distinctive melodies . The author finds his inspiration in folklore, especially Moravian (Leoš Janácek), the works of Czech interwar avantgarde (Pavel Borkovec) and in jazz (Jaroslav Ježek). His music reflects the emotional states of a man living in the twenty-first century whose life style is predominantly determined by an urban environment. Gregor does not use any of the Musica Nova theories, instead he founded his own music language. The basis for his compositions is communicative music, which follows the patterns of human perceptive psychology. Gregor's concertant compositions are typical for a new instrument stylization and nontraditional attitudes towards instrument virtuosity (playing with a palm, elbow; an unconventional fingering). His piano sonatas and concerts enable the...
