Bílá, Lucie ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
The aim of the bachelor thesis is mainly to make an analysis of political speeches and oficial documents of two South African political parties, National Party and Economic Freedom Fighters, with a discoursive analysis as a methodology. Persuasion and Signs: Semiotics and Rhetoric as Complementary Disciplines
Švantner, Martin ; Marcelli, Miroslav (advisor) ; Višňovský, Emil (referee) ; Šíp, Radim (referee)
Persuasion and Signs: Semiotics and Rhetoric as Complementary Disciplines The hypothesis we consider in this dissertation is that of complementarity of semiotics and rhetorics, both in symstematical and historical context. The first part deals with the late modern interpretation of the history of rhetorics, sophistry and sophistical rhetoric (showing why i tis necessary to discriminate between these terms). This is illustrated by the discussion about pragmatics and interpretation of ancient rhetoric in the anglo-saxon philosophy of the late 20th century. Topic of persuasion is considered as the main point of investigation for its being common both to rhetoric and semiotics. This is elaborated in the second part of thesis, which concentrates on the analysis of Ch. S. Peirce's late work, especially his classification of signs, semiotics as pure rhetoric, with emphasis on his concept of pragmatism. The pragmatism is the point where semiotics and rhetoric coincide. In the conclusion it is find out, that semiotics and rhetoric are complementary disciplines, at least for their specific account of the notion of sign and persuasion. Keywords Rhetoric, rhetoric, semiotics, semeiotic, sophistry, Lyotard, Vitanza, Nietzsche, Peirce, Deleuze.
Rhetorical Figures in Visual Advertisements of Selected Fashion Houses
Dvořáková, Andrea ; Šafaříková, Radana (advisor) ; Švantner, Martin (referee)
Selected fashion houses that exclusively offer luxurious goods use specific form of promotion of their products. Each house usually holds onto traditions of its country and features essential for its own brand while creating new collections. From the point of view of neo-rhetoric it would be appropriate to analyze visual advertisements of the houses (Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry) if they create certain models via them. The main advertising campaigns for the spring/summer 2011 season were chosen for this comparison. Under the terms of observation and semiotic analysis of the fashion advertisement focused on rhetoric figures it can be proved that individual fashion houses aim their attention to how their potential customers' thinking is influenced by their advertising. The model of Roland Barthes is used for the analysis of chosen visual advertisements. Out of all rhetorical tropes the attention is paid to main four - visual metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche and irony. Fashion advertising meets unwritten norm that sets a target to convince the customer of suitability of the products for him.
Meaning of lion representation in the past and present - semiotic analysis
Řezáčová, Veronika ; Šafaříková, Radana (advisor) ; Svoboda, Aleš (referee)
In my diploma thesis I deal with symbolism of the representation of lion in current marketing. My thesis follows the conviction that animals have been playing the important role since the beginning of human history. On the grounds of this persuasion I suppose that the animal symbolism is very easy to decode for people because of their previous experience. In the first instance I define the relationship between semiotics and marketing in my thesis. After mentioning several types of prior texts I maintain the position that the image of lion and its symbolism are identically perceived on the basis of and according with the symbolism of lion in those prior texts in current marketing as well. During the studying of the "lion" symbolism I use the terminology of some important authors and theoreticians of semiotics - particularly Roland Barthes's levels of denotation and connotation and distinction of a sign to icon, index and symbol according to Charles Sanders Peirce's theory. I also employ the theory of visual rhetorical figures. I end my thesis with a simple questionnaire which is supposed to complete and confirm my assumptions of the comprehension of the image of lion in marketing - hence the lion usually appears as a patriotic symbol, secondly as a protector, thirdly as a strong and fighting animal.

Jelínková, Barbora ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Šoltys, Otakar (referee)
The diploma thesis presents own research method for examination of speech formations. It focuses on examination of televised political debates. The method applied here may be characterized as an organized hermeneutic analysis of political discourse. Through the application of an analytical - philosophical approach (e.g. application of the theory of maxima, illocutionary acts evaluation, and analysis of arguments and verification of their truthfulness), the method allows us to establish objective facts of the debate as well as some personal features of debate participants. To examine texts, the theoretical knowledge of distinguished authors (J. J. Austin, K. Bayer, T. A. van Dijk, N. Fairclough, H. P. Grice, J. Habermas, J. Kraus, G. N. Leeche, J. R. Searl, and others) have been made use of. In addition to the literary survey, the thesis also includes the argumentation in respect of selection of the method, selection of talk shows, transcript of debates from TV records, transformation of the text into an analysable form, and research methodology. Accordingly, a specific communication model of programme is drawn up, the talk show discourse is analysed as a whole, and the styles and argumentation of selected participants are examined and analysed, which is followed by a comprehensive assessment of the...
