The body and corporality in the service of socialist realism
Marešová, Ina ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Schmarc, Vít (referee)
Ina Marešová The body and corporality in the service of socialist realism Abstract The thesis analyses images of the body and embodiment during socialist realism in poetry, prose and periodicals between 1945 and 1956 as well as during the so-called 'normalization' period in Czechoslovakia. Individual forms of embodiment are presented via a system of binary oppositions (individual - collective body, public - private, functional - dysfunctional, male - female, beautiful - ugly etc.), on the basis of which it attempts to demonstrate how the 'natural' symbolism of the body became a tool for representing a specific value system. The thesis describes the coming to terms of socialist realism with the individualised and fragmented body as a legacy of naturalism, the avant-garde and surrealism through the adaptation of the individual body to typified resemblances (images of the enemy, man, woman, leader). These emblematic reductions were, in many cases, taken from popular literature which, despite being rejected by socialism, guaranteed popularity amongst readers and was intelligible to the largest part of the population. The highest level of embodiment was the staging of the collective body, the 'spartakiada' performances, which were co-responsible for creating the myth of national unity, discipline and the will to...

Enlightened Actor
Hajdyla, Jiří ; Krofta, Josef (advisor) ; Tichý, Zdeněk (referee)
I am convinced that the theatre phenomenon is closely linked with light and its theatre performance characteristics. I am convinced that the first catharsis in the theatre history was the moment when a spectator experienced an awe while looking at the sunset and realizing his smallness. I am convinced that the wholeness of the creation of our world including its smallest details is based on theatre principles. Shouldn't theatre be the mirror of life? Is not man created as an image of God, according to the Bible? Isn't nature with all its action and principles an image ? a mirror ? of something hidden, great, but intimate to us? In this respect, I would like to name the light as the agent of all these pictures. Light is a kind of informer of hidden things for the man ? things that man cannot see but the light tells him about them. The world is one great light theatre. It is a God's theatre in which we as well as all things around us are the theatre props and where the light enters as God's actor. For this reason, I as an actor see light as my colleague from whom I can learn a lot. Recognizing the possibilities of light in a theatre performance is a prerequisite for becoming an enlightened actor, an actor who desires to draw from the light, to be the light and to manage the stage space similarly to the light?

The significance of female characters in Joseph Conrad"s novels Chance, Victory and The Rescue
Shumyk, Ganna ; Beran, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Quinn, Justin (referee)
The main purpose of the present work is to analyse the role of female characters in Joseph Conrad's writing and consequently to challenge his conventional image of a misogynistic writer. Three novels of his late period are chosen for close reading and detailed examination: Chance, Victory and The Rescue. All the three novels belong to the late period of Conrad's literary career which has produced a contradictory critical reaction among Conradian scholars. According to some critics this period shows signs of decline of Conrad's genius. Others, however, observe the woman's question as a new concern of the writer. Thus, the second chapter of the thesis summarizes critical approaches to women in Conrad's late novels. It illustrates the way they have developed and transformed from the beginning of the twentieth century to the first decade of the twenty first century. The rest of the work is divided into three sections, each focusing on the analysis of one individual novel and its main female character. Each novel is considered separately in terms of its form and structure in order to demonstrate the way Conrad experiments with the genre of romance and other related forms. Consequently, we prove that he creates a parody of the genre and its effects. With the intention of determining the significance of...

Use of image analysis in the monitoring of critically endangered species Spiranthes spiralis
IPSER, Zdeněk
A population of an endangered orchid species Spiranthes spiralis was discovered in 1980 in the National natural monument Pastviště u Fínů in village Albrechtice, near Sušice. Since 1985 the number of flowering individuals of this population has been regularly monitored. Since autumn 1998 all the specimen found there have been marked and biometrically measured. Since the beginning of monitoring, big fluctuations in the number of flowering specimens or in survival of the individual plant rosettes have been observed among the years. The aim of this thesis was to design the so called index of shading and to verify the possibility of its use to explain some phenomena of plant population dynamics. The index was designed with image analysis and biometric data. The hypothesis has been tested, that the basic variable determining the plant{\crq}s fitness (survival, flowering, vegetative propagation etc.) is the rate of shading by neighboring vegetation (expressed with the index of shading). It has been found that the effect of shading on flowering is not significant or hidden by other factors (such as the course of the weather in the season etc.). The size of the leaf area affects the probability of flowering, number of blooms and height of the inflorescence stem. My thesis also focused on costs of flowering, survival probability (since 1998) and flowering dynamics (since 1986).

Image comparison using eye movement simulation
Veľk, Miroslav ; Bálek, Martin (advisor) ; Bílý, Tomáš (referee)
In the present work we study the biologically plausible and psychologically motivated model of human visual attention and explain the importance of similar models. We propose and implement methods to find salient locations in the image. We give detailed instructions on creating saliency maps, which contain information about saliency of every location in the explored scene. Using this maps we simulate shifts of visual attention (eye movement). A simulated scanpath representing this shifts is created and then analyzed. We especially focus on comparison of different scanpaths by different features. Finally practical use of our model is outlined.
