The representation of judges in selected czech media

In her diploma thesis titled "Depiction of the figure of judge in selected Czech media", the author aims to analyse what levels of representation are used to depict the figure of a judge in selected Czech series. The selected five figures of judges are described on the basis of their physical description, roles in society, behaviour and relationships by which their character is co-created. The author focused mainly on stereotypes, which were used to depict the figures. Part of the analysis of the figures of judge is their classification into the category of heroes or villains according to the typology of figures by Brian McNair. Also utilized are the typology of figures by E.M. Forster and Seymour Chatman. The media's depiction of the judges in selected series is positive. At the level of representativeness, it influences the perception of the institution of courts, which are shaped by the depiction of the judicial profession. 1
Representation of the succes in czech television serials after 1989

Diploma theses "Medial representations of success in Czech series after 1989" is researching, how is through six Czech television series presented the success. Medial images are an important source of knowledge of our current society. Success itself is a phenomenon we are facing daily in our lives. A large part of this experience is made through the media. The purpose of this work is to identify, which key phenomena of society distinguished values has been viewed in selected series (Konec velkých prázdnin, Život na zámku, Ranč U Zelené sedmi, Reportérka, Semestr and Terapie). Through the observations we are able to describe which images were mostly displayed, which at least and with who it has been connected. Thanks to this, we can review whether these medial representations of success are indulgent with their own evaluation of this concept. The recognizability of these phenomena and its interpretation is considered as a parameter of an individual personalities and their observation is being the typical subject of stereotyping. The conclusion of the thesis shows what is the development of representation of success in the Czech series and which picture of the current society has been created by these interpretations.
Gender aspects in communication of sport events: Case study of medialization of the Gabriela Koukalová's and Jaromír Jágr's absence from the XXIII Olympic Winter Games

The diploma thesis titled Gender aspects in communication of sport events: Case study of medialization of the Gabriela Koukaová's and Jaromír Jágr's absence from the XXIII. Olympic Winter Games is focused on communication aspects of the Czech biathlonist Gabriela Koukalová and hockey player Jaromír Jágr in relation to their gender. The theoretical frame which introduces the reader to the concept of gender itself and the characteristics of the Czech society and local sporting environment is followed by the practical part composed by analysis of the two concrete cases. The poststructural qualitative discoursive analysis has been chosen as an analytical tool. By using such tool the author analyses the proclaims by the sportsman and sportswoman precisely on the social media, the reaction of the public to these statements and the overall mediatization in chosen media. The complex case study conclusion summarizes identified trends which are present throughout the analyzed data. Some of the defined trends might in the context of the Czech environment be strengthening the observed patriarchal social system.
The Analysis of Representation of Suicide and Self-Mutilation in Popular Culture in Years 1999-2019

The master thesis is focusing on the representation of suicides and self-mutilation in American production movies and television in the year 1999-2019. The thesis aims to find out, how are these phenomena shown and with whom popular culture connects them. The theoretical part is dealing with social and media construction of reality, stereotype, stigmatization, and clearing the concepts and definitions of phenomena. For better understanding this part also includes a short presentation of socially deviant behavior since examined phenomena are part of it. The analysis was made based on qualitative content analysis and completed with short quantitative analysis for sociodemographic comparison with available real data. The sample contains 23 motion pictures as are films and series. Based on them and with processes of grounded theory the coding was done, typology was made and pointed out findings with whom American production connects these phenomena and how they represent them in popular culture. Those findings are important for their relations to media construction of reality as non-experts can perceive the way it is represented for their own.
Media reflection of feminism and gender topics within the czech version of Playboy magazine

This bachelor thesis studies how the Czech version of the men's lifestyle magazine Playboy presents themes of gender and feminism. The theoretical part represents the theoretical basis of the thesis. It describes the content of gender studies and gender issues, the difference between sex and gender, the theoretical basis of gender and the issue of gender hierarchy in society are outlined. Furthermore, the theoretical part explains feminism as a movement, including its history. The concept of media representation of reality and the way media present feminism, masculinity and feminism are then introduced. The last part deals with the history and present of Playboy magazine, including its Czech version. The subject of the practical part is qualitative content analysis, carried out by the method of the grounded theory according to Anselm Strauss and Juliet Corbin. 1993, 2007 and 2019 Czech versions of Playboy magazine were established as a research sample. Media representation of the Czech national identity in the historical TV show DějePIC!

The bachelor thesis deals with the representation of Czech national identity in the show called DějePIC! (2017). It's a family TV cycle about Czech history. The thesis is based on the assumption, that the media participate on defining the concept. The outcome of this thesis is the analysis of the interpretations of Czech national identity in the chosen show. The analysis focuses mainly at the presentation of symbols, events, personalities and the characteristics of Czech national identity. The aim of this thesis is to answer the question how and in what relations is the Czech national identity presented in the show DějePIC!. In the first part I presented the key theoretical concepts, which are the national identity and the connected collective memory, then medial construction of reality and the forming of national identity in media. The second part of the thesis is empirical, and it consists of the analysis. Due to the nature of the analysis I'm using the qualitative methodology. Media representation of current female political readers and gender discourse in online enviroment

The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the media representation of political leaders in the articles published on the Facebook pages and of the form of discussion under the articles creates fairly comprehensive picture of the discourse on the issue of women at the top political positions in the online environment. Although gender does not appear to be one of the most important factors influencing the tone of the analyzed texts, it is possible to identify several tendencies that are related to gender in both articles and comments. Except for positive tone when evaluating political actions and opinions of female politician, which highlighted the stereotypical characteristics of women (patience, compromise, etc.), articles and comments are negative. Other identified forms of media representation of female politicians were usage of images of power and weaknesses (female too strong is associated with negative tone); associating women with emotions (both extremes - absence of emotions and over-emotionality  are associated with negative tone); and using privacy-related topics such as family, fashion, hobbies (a woman who is not interested in these areas, and thus does not fall into the stereotypical image of a woman, is again depicted negatively). Children in advertising: Children's perception of childhood

This bachelor thesis was focused on the attitudes of children to representations of childhood in the media. The images of children are often used as content of storytelling in advertising. The literature review aimed to analyse attitudes towards childhood across history in Western society, and like them with the representation of childhood in advertising. Qualitative research in the form of focus groups was chosen for its practical part. The research consisted of three forty-five minutes long focus groups, carried out in the primary school environment, which were attended by 18 child participants in total. Division of the research into three thematic units assisted to precisely answer two selected research questions: How do children perceive the media representation of childhood in advertising? Which of the selected characteristics do they prefer, and why? Research has shown, that children responded positively to a media representation of childhood that was identical to their own experience, in the case the innocent childhood.
Media representation of the United Kingdom Independence Party in selected British media before EU referendum

This bachelor thesis is analyzing media representation of the United Kigdom Independent Party in selected printed british media from the beginning of the year 2016 until the date of the United Kigdom European membership referendum, which happened on Thursday 23 June, 2016 and became known as brexit. The paper is examining how many times were the selected topics used with connection to the Party, as well as the culmination of these topics in individual months and the media representations created by the medias, based on these articles. Through the short history of the Party this work contains explanation of all the concepts, which are connected with the analysis. That one is done based on the two chosen themes, populism and euroscepticism. These topics were searched in the printed weekday newspapers The Sun, Daily Mail and The Daily Mirror. These tabloids were selected based on the newspaers circulation in the selected period and also their political inclination. The paper analyzes all the articles from the period, which contain any mantion about the party, speifically UKIP, or United Kongdom Independence Party, which was 565 articles. Analysis of the media representation of the Hungarian border barrier construction

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou mediálního obrazu výstavby pohraniční bariéry na maďarsko-srbské hranici. Text se částečně věnuje kontextu a politickému rozměru události, hlavní částí je rozbor mediální reflexe události v období červen - září 2015 ve třech českých denících, Mladé frontě DNES, deníku Právo a Hospodářských novinách, volba titulů má za cíl pokrýt různorodost zpravodajské scény. Výzkumná otázka je koncipována jako komparace oficiální reprezentace výstavby maďarskou stranou a reflexe události v českých zpravodajských denících - zda mediální obraz odpovídal oficiálnímu způsobu komunikace, popř. jaké jiné způsoby reprezentace převládaly. Pro vypracování byla zvolena kvalitativní metoda kritické diskurzivní analýzy dle přístupu T. Van Dijka, která umožnila definovat základní aktéry události a způsob jejich reprezentaci, na základě toho jsou definována nejtypičtější schémata komunikace, reflektující pozici Maďarska, mezinárodní reakce, podporovatele a odpůrce rozhodnutí a v neposlední řadě reprezentaci imigrace a uprchlíků v rámci tématu. Práce reflektuje mediální diskurz, který se týká problematiky bezpečnosti a ochrany státu a současně způsob reprezentace imigrantů v rámci specifické výseče v širokém spektru témat migrační krize.
