Lexical Variability in Czech of the Mid-19th Century (Based on the Correspondence of Karel Havlíček)
Rybová, Martina ; Martínek, František (advisor) ; Saicová Římalová, Lucie (referee)
This bachelor thesis analyses the variety of lexical mediums in the Karel Havlíček's correspondence. The aim of this work is to identify the variation of closed classes of words. Individual terms have been selected from Havlíček's correspondence and they have been analysed. The main part of this work deals with secondary preposition that was stabilised in Czech during 19th century. It particularly focuses on the competition between used prepositions. The next part of the work deals with conjunctions. The overview of expression used in the correspondence is presented on the example of relation between sentences. The penultimate part of the work deals with variety of particle function. The grammatical particle is unsettled when we compare it with conjunctions and prepositions. Chosen terms are compared with 19th century secondary literature, they are valued according to its style, frequency and usage in either formal or informal correspondence. The last part of the work is dedicated to adverbs. This work also deals with borders between said word classes, criteria of grammatical processes and transition between word classes.
Hugo Riemann's Correspondence with Josef Jiránek from the Fonds of the Bedřich Smetana Museum
Vejvodová, Petra ; Ottlová, Marta (advisor) ; Hradecká, Dita (referee)
The thesis focuses on autograph letters sent by Hugo Riemann to Josef Jiránek, currently archived in the Bedřich Smetana Museum. The collection includes nine letters (two copies by Josef Jiránek), 12 postal cards and two envelopes. There are also two printed announcements (related to Riemann's 60th birthday.) Apart from addressing the theory of phrasing, Riemann's letters reflect upon theoretical and teaching treatises by both Riemann and Jiránek. The letters served as an invaluable source of information for Riemann's fundamental piece of work, the Musik-Lexikon. The objective of the thesis is to duly transcribe, summarize and comment on the correspondence which has received little attention by scholars so far.

Fürstová, Lucie ; Mocná, Dagmar (advisor) ; Krejčová, Iva (referee)

The Translator Ludvík Kundera
Nešporová, Jitka ; Veselá, Gabriela (advisor) ; Svoboda, Tomáš (referee) ; Munzar, Jiří (referee)
Jitka Nešporová doctoral thesis ABSTRACT The doctoral thesis focuses on the translation persona and work of Ludvík Kundera. A poet himself, he translated verse first and foremost and was able to do so from many languages, although he sometimes resorted to the use of interlinear translations. The research, however, concentrates primarily on the description, analysis and reception of his direct translations in the Czech - German language pair, which was predominant in Kundera's translation work. The thesis contributes to the understanding of the history of Czech literary translation after 1945 by describing Kundera's translation method, making accessible part of his literary estate, notably his correspondence, and providing an update to Kundera's translation bibliography. Kundera is best known as the exclusive, authorized translator of Bertolt Brecht's drama and poetry. His translations of Expressionists Georg Trakl and Gottfried Benn, for which he received the State Award for Literary Translation in 1996, are considered canonical today. The same holds true for his translations of Paul Celan's poetry and Alfred Kubin's novel Die andere Seite (The Other Side). Kundera was also the first to introduce Czech readers to the poetry of Alsatian Dadaist Hans Arp and the poetry of East German lyricist Peter Huchel....
Bulgarian track in life of Božena Němcová
Georgieva Ivanova, Sylvia ; Hasil, Jiří (advisor) ; Ivanovová, Darina (referee)
- English The Bulgarian trace in the life of Božena Němcová The relation of Božena Němcová to Bulgaria, the Bulgarian culture, the life and struggle of the Bulgarians in the late fifties and early sixties of the 19th century is one of the most important chapters of the Czech-Bulgarian cultural relations of the past. Unfortunately, it remains a matter almost unknown even to expert philologists. To get a better understanding of the relationship between B. Němcová and Bulgaria, we need to examine it in its close relation with her attitude towards other Slavic nations as part of the then predominating vision of the Slavic unity (the Pan-Slavic idea). The following text provides an analysis of her position regarding the quite complicated situation on the Balkans at that time, as well as her contacts with Bulgarians in Prague. Due to these acquaintances with writers or just texts written by certain Bulgarian (or Balkan in general) writers, she even started learning Bulgarian. There exist some of her translations of Bulgarian texts into Czech and even texts written in Bulgarian. These documents are described in detail, and the full chronology of creative connections of the famous Czech writer is included. The subject has been investigated on the basis of archive materials available both in the Czech...

Aim of thesis is comparison of editorial treatment of Karel Havlíček Borovský's correspondence and reconstruction of editorial methods and principles which editors followed. It is also discovery how substantially the editions correspond with each other and which procedures and changes they adopt. Part of the thesis pays attention to description of language and orthography in Havlíček's correspondence. For the comparison the sample of epistolary units identical to most of the editions was chosen and from analysis between autographs and particular editorial treatments procedures of every edition were reconstructed. In the analysis the changes are evaluated according to current linguistic and orthographic codification, on the contrary, summarised principles are evaluated according to contemporary codification. Based on previous data the editions are compared afterwards. The research revealed that older editions bear only tendencies of regular corrections, while in later editions the regular corrections and editorial principles are evident. But neither these do comply with current requirements of editorial practice. According to predictions, character of corrections also revealed which methods the editions adopted from each other. The research also found out which editions are the most appropriate...

Braunová, Linda ; Mocná, Dagmar (advisor) ; Krejčová, Iva (referee)
BRAUNOVÁ, L.: František Kožík's biographical novels about Zdenka Braunerová compared to the extant correspondence /Master Degree Thesis/ Prague 2014, Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Education, Departement of the Czech Literature. This Master Degree Thesis compares Kožík's novels Na křídle větrného mlýna and Neklidné babí léto with the extant correspondence, which is used in different ways in both novels. The starting point was extensive research, which provided a precise undertanding of the author's intentions. The goal was to find out how the author forms the characters and their relationship using sources, especially the correspondence. At the same time this thesis delineates the difference between facts and fiction with an example of Kožík's novels.
