The genetic background of obesity and its treatment with bariatric surgery
Lischková, Olga
Obesity is a frequent metabolic disease that causes many other health and socioeconomic complications. Obesity arises due to excessive energy intake and decrease in energy expenditure, which is a conseqence of contemporary lifestyle. Moreover, obesity has a strong genetic component. Common obesity is polygenic, multifactorial disease, in which individual genes interact with each other and with environmental factors. Genome-wide association studies, conducted between 2006-09, led to the discovery of dozens of gene loci that predispose individuals to obesity. The strongest signals were registered for polymorphisms in FTO (fat mass and obesity-associated) and near a gene MC4R (melanocortin 4 receptor). However, the contributions of these variations on the phenotype of obesity are very small, therefore, it is necessary to validate the results of such robust studies. It is very important to uncover the effects of genetic variants for understanding the molecular mechanisms of energy metabolism. The studies presented in this thesis refer about the impact of polymorphisms in selected genes on anthropometric and metabolic parameters of the patients of the Institute of Endocrinology and of healthy volunteers who underwent functional tests. Our cohort includes a representative sample of Czech children (COPAT...

Elder abuse and neglect
Haluzíková, Lenka ; Slaměník, Ivan (referee) ; Šulová, Lenka (advisor)
This thesis deals with the subject of elder abuse and neglect (EAN). The author in her theoretical part presents all sorts of aspects of the EAN phenomenon which is broadly interdisciplinary and whose definition and prevalence were not assessed yet. It describes exposures of single types of EAN and symptoms, whose knowledge is necessary for effective detection of particular cases of EAN. Hitherto most of the cases stay concealed because the victims tend to hide the abuse and simultaneously neither the community of specialists nor non-specialists have sufficient awareness about the problem in order to perceive it. In this course an education of the public is crucial but also the author deems necessary to change the attitude of all-society towards the elder people which at the present time seems quite discriminatory. Farther the author attends to a victim and an offender of EAN and their interaction, in this respect she presents risk factors and searches for potential causations of abuse. Detailed knowledge of these causations is crucial for suitable aiming of prevention. For a complex intervention of EAN would be ideal to create multidisciplinary teams of different specialists. But such teams are rather exception worldwide. Among these specialists a psychologist should be present as he can play an important...

Klisková, Zuzana ; Táborská, Silvie (referee) ; Sládková, Petra (advisor)
We can expect increased amount of stroke with lengthening of life and growth number of people in higher aged categories. These incidents mean not only health but also social and economical problem. Neurological patiens go to refreshment residence to the Krušné mountains. The biggest group is made up of patients after stroke, there are mainly young people after car accidents and other head injuries and I would like to mention people who were operated with a brain tumor. Health condition of these people is not without a deficit, no matter what it is - motorics or sensitivity failure, speech failure or some psychical problems. It is necessary to provide them with a complex health care of multidisciplinary team from the beginning. We can reach visible progress if we combine the patient's active approach to his habilitation.

Software testing in Microsoft Visual Studio
Padevět, Daniel ; Buchalcevová, Alena (advisor)
In software development process, there can be misunderstandings, communication problems between individual members of the development team and mistakes when writing code or designing applications. These problems need to be resolved before the application is released into the production environment. To discover these errors it is necessary to properly test the software product. All these activities are engaged in discipline called Software Quality Assurance (SQA), which is an integral part of the software development process. The thesis discusses this discipline and procedures for software testing using the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. The main objective of this work is to create comprehensive methodology for automated testing of web and Windows applications in Microsoft Visual Studio and to verify that procedures in practice. The reader will learn the theoretical basis of software testing at the beginning of the thesis. In next chapter, there are described various features that Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 offers for software testing. Following chapter describes the applications testing in IBM Rational Functional Tester, which is suitable for Windows applications testing (Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 does not support this kind of tests). In other part of the work -- Case Study -- the reader will learn web and Windows applications testing. Case study can serve as a basis for further methodological manual for teams engaged in software testing. The usage of instruments for testing is explained in real examples. At the end of the work there are set out recommendations for the team collaboration using Microsoft Team Foundation Server, and there are also compared the testing instruments and reviewed functions that will come up with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010.

Pseudo-coordination in the syntax of contemporary Czech
Škodová, Svatava ; Uličný, Oldřich (advisor) ; Hirschová, Milada (referee) ; Zikánová, Šárka (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to address the diversity of coordinative constructions, illustrating their properties, and to pro vide a forma 1 account for them in the frame of the theoretical background of the dependency syntax. This thesis namely investigates three construction types in the syntax of contemporary Czech, aH ofwhich have in common a binary coordinative structure, using the Czech coordinator a (and), where two verbs are coordinated. These constructions are referred to as prototypical coordination (ProKoor), pseudo-coordination (PseKoor) and reduplicative coordination (ReKoor). The main claim is that even though these three types share the same surface structure (go )VlandV2 or Vl andVl, they do not represent the same phenomenon of coordination and it is necessary to divide them into three types, as proposed. I have proposed a two-part analysis. Firstly, PseKoor is analysed as a complex predicate formed on the level of syntax. This analysis immediately accounts for a number of properties of PseKoor which allows the comparison with ProKoor. Secondly, PseKoor is analysed as means of aktionsart, resp. as a variety coordination over substages of events. This also accounts for a number of characteristics of PseKoor, this time on the level of semantics. ln this way I also present criteria for...

Media, culture and society
Urban, Jindřich ; Matějů, Martin (advisor) ; Soukup, Václav (referee) ; Mikeš, Jiří (referee)
Media studies needs to engage own theoretical base and methodology to dissect and critique the current system of culture, society , politics and media. It is necessary to interrogate the press, system of broadcasting and Internet to trace the role of multiple media in contemporary society and to embrace a concept of alternative media. Media literacy and pedagogy should teach how to read and critically dissect newspapers, TV, radio, the Internet and other media of news and information to enable students to become active and engaged democratic citizens. While early cultural studies by the Birmingham school included a focus on critically reading newspapers, TV news and information programs, and the image of politics, much cultural studies of the past decades has focused on media entertainment, consumption, and audience response to specific media programs. New communication technology enables new social and organizational configurations. A comprehensive cultural studies will interrogate news and entertainment, journalism and consumption, and include media studies as well as textual studies and audience reception studies. There are different relationships between the mass communication and the system of social value and social differences that organise power in contemporary society. Mass communication cannot be...

English book titles in gerundial form
Blaheta, Radek ; Dušková, Libuše (advisor) ; Šaldová, Pavlína (referee)
The category of gerund is a symptomatic component of the grammatical system of present-day English. Numerous studies have dealt with its nature and functions as well as with its delimitation as opposed to related forms of present participle or verbal noun. No matter whether the term gerund is used or not and whether it is theoretically sustainable to differentiate between the related -ing forms, it is obvious that the -ing form that in many contexts clearly displays both nominal and verbal features plays a crucial role within both written and spoken discourse. Nonetheless, apart from the gerund operating within continuous texts, it is revealing to explore its behaviour and functions in the text-frame components, particularly the title, i.e. a text-frame component with a crucial role in the printed publication of a book type. In this context, it is necessary to present 3 basic starting points of the present study: 1. the notion of gerund as a grammatical category is retained in this study (see 2.1.3); 2. a new term - gerund title 1 - is introduced in order to capture the analyzed structures (see the detailed characterization in 2.3); 3. the analysis is largely based on the functional approach. Based on the assumptions presented above, the aim of the present study is an overall analysis of the gerund title,...

The Barcelona Process within the External Relations of the European Union (The Contribution of Spain)
Bocianová, Kateřina ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Abrhám, Josef (referee)
The Barcelona Process represents the European Union's effort to define complex and coherent strategy towards the countries of the Mediterranean region. Mutual relations have been gradually developed from the 1960s; nevertheless only particular initiatives were undertaken with the aim to deal with the specific aspects of the relations. With regard to the development of the European Communities and considering events on the international scene it was necessary to define more complex strategy that would comprise not only economic aspects but also political, security, social and cultural aspects. The introduction of the thesis addresses to defining and arrangement of the external relations of the European Communities/European Union. Then it deals with the development of mutual relations until 1995 according to every decade, in which there are mentioned and described initiatives and activities of EC/EU in the Mediterranean region as well as events on the international scene that had significant impact on the shaping of the agenda. Year 1995 represents a break-through because of the fact that during the first Euro-Mediterranean Conference of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, held in Barcelona on 27 - 28 November 1995, the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership was created and we are talking about the starting point of the...
