Union of the journalists following of events Prague spring and its consequences at the time of normalization

The diploma thesis desribes the situation in Czech Union of Journalists during the Prague Spring era and the normalization era. Its aim is to explain to the reader how the situation changed after the intervention of Soviet army in August 1968. Prague Spring is generally perceived as a period of regime measures release and progressive ideas establishment. On the other hand, in the era after the Occupation strated theperiod of normalization and consolidation, which brought many repressive measures to light. It all took its toll in the function of Union of Journalists and the whole media sphere. The function of the Union o journalists becomes important from the political and ideological view. Attention is on the Union's structure as well. Thesis is focused on the period of 1968 to 1972 and embraces the historical events from Prague Spring to VI. Congress of the Union, in which the allegiance to Communist Party of Czechoslovakia was pladged by the journalists. It describes how the journalists were forced to conform their pursiut to the regime. Main focus is on the way of presentation of the journalists themselves, the relations in the Union and the change of the prestige and role of the journalist in the society before and after the normalization era. This master's thesis introduces the essential biographical sources for the research of the great personality of European German studies, journalism and politics, Prof. Eduard Goldstücker (1913- 2000): Prozesse: Erfahrungen eines Mitteleuropäers (1989), Vzpomínky 1913-1945 (2003), Vzpomínky 1945-1968 (2005) and Von der Stunde der Hoffnung zur Stunde des Nichts: Gespräche (2009). As the coordinate axis for understanding of the development and extensive areas of operation of this unique type of germanist serve the massive social and historical transformations in the 20th century Europe: The Great Depression, the World Wars, anti-Semitism, fascism, the Cold War, Stalinism, the Prague Spring and the period after the fall of the Iron Curtain. The focus of this thesis are Goldstücker's professional, editorial and journalistic activities and interconnected efforts in the field of diplomacy, politics and current affairs, which make him a scientific and social personality of exceptional importance.
Reaction of librarians to political and social situation in 1968

This bachelor thesis deals with the librarian activity in the period of the Prague Spring in 1968. Its main goal is to determine, based on the period press, the degree of involvement of the librarians in the reform process, the support as well as the criticism of the contemporary state and their demands for changes, in both professional and labour spheres. It describes the process of formation of the Association of Library and Information Professionals. It also discusses the relationship with the Slovak librarianship and the founding of the Slovak library association. The final part deals with the specific political activity of the librarians which is illustrated by the reactions to on-going changes during the reform process. That includes the reaction to the Action Program of the Communist Party and the support for this program, the reaction to the Warsaw Letter from July 1968 and the subsequent August occupation.
Press Act no. 81/1966 and its influence on the events of the Prague Spring

Thesis deals with the Press Act no. 81/1966 Coll., on periodical press and other mass media and its influence on the events of the Prague Spring reform in 1968. I wanted to highlight how important role the press act and its legalization of censorship of the press and other mass media played in the process of democratization of the communist regime. Institutionalized censorship became the impetus for sharpening criticism of the ruling Communist Party. After many years when censorship interventions were carried out illegally, it was possible to lawfully defend against this tool of communist managing, controlling and restricting freedom of expression and to demand its abolition. Very strongly the demand for abolition censorship came after IV. congress of the Union of Czechoslovak Writers. Part of the reform-minded senior officials of the Communist Party which supported the democratization of the system, advocated the attainment of freedom of expression, because they knew that a free media can most effectively contribute to the reform ideas with which they identify. 1968 Prague Spring in Karlovy Vary through the prism of the regional newspaper Stráž míru

This bachelor thesis deals with period of Prague Spring from the standpoint of the periodical of Karlovy Vary Stráž míru. It presents a brief historical perspective on the events and the media situation in Czechoslovakia. In the first chapter there are social and international events which preceeded the Prague Spring. Attention is focused on events after the rise of Alexandr Dubček to the head of Communist Party, Akční program of Communist party and the activity of reformists. The second chapter deals with the media situation in Czechoslovakia. There are described large changes in the media sphere during the Prague Spring, especially the revocation of censorship and the development of all types of media. This chapter includes the description of legislation and international meetings, which have affected the situation in the country. At the end of the theoretical part, there is a brief description of the weekly Stráž míru. Stráž míru was a regional periodical in the district of Karlovy Vary. The third chapter has an analytical nature as individual articles are analytically discussed. This thesis starts with the introduction of the general historic moments of postwar Czechoslovakia. Attention is paid to the February 1948, Prague Spring and the events of August 1968. These dates established two waves of emigration from Czechoslovakia. In this context, there are presented personalities of Jiri Pelikan and Pavel Tigrid as leading personalities of exile. The analytical part focuses on the comparison of Tigrid's Svedectvi and Listy published by Jiri Pelikan. Analysis is based on important events in postwar history. The thesis is mainly focused on the different perceptions of the Prague Spring and the Velvet Revolution in 1989.

Discussion about the Czech Deal

Main subject of this bachelor's thesis is a discussion about the Czech deal in the context of Prague spring 1968. This discussion took place on the pages of newspapers and magazines in the 1968 - 1969. In the first chapter of this thesis, the main factors which resulted in the loss of the reform process of Prague spring are analyzed. In the second chapter, the discussion about Czech deal is being analyzed, the original texts are being compared and the main arguments of main authors of these documents are explained. The third chapter takes into account the overlap of the original discussion about Czech deal nowadays and investigates whether some moments of the Prague spring could provide solutions for the modern society problems.
Reflection of political process in childern`s magazines between the years 1968-1970 in Czechoslovakia

Bachelor thesis aims to analyze magazines for children and youth, which were printed between 1968 and 1970 in Czechoslovakia. I will focus on the content and also formal aspects of selected journals, and both aspects will be examined in the light of the background of the political events of the period. The aim will be to point out any propaganda and to determine to what extent the magazines for children affected by contemporary political discourse. Author will also undertake a comparison of each magazine on the grounds of any differences, even pointing to the environment from which individual journals have emerged.
The Image of Czechoslovakia in the British Communist Press 1966-1969

(in English): This bachelor thesis is focused on reaction of British communists to events in Czechoslovakia in the second half of sixties. The biggest attention is dedicated to the reform year of 1968. This image is reconstructed with the analysis of the party's newspaper Morning Star in period of 1966-1969. Thesis involves chapters about the evolution of British communism, British newspaper's culture and British relations toward the countries of Eastern Bloc - especially toward Czechoslovakia. Detailed analysis of newspaper's articles regarding Czechoslovak themes in Morning Star is likewise part of this thesis. The analysis aim is to illustrate the interest in Czechoslovakia in the British communist environment and to contribute to a broader research on the Western communism.
