The Emersonian Pynchon
Naser, Safwan ; Robbins, David Lee (advisor) ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (referee)
Ralph Waldo Emerson and his postmodemist colleague Thomas Pynchon ... a seemingly incongruous connection. The aim of this thesis is to explore the unusual relationship between these prominent authors and advert to the great influence which Ralph Waldo Emerson unquestionably had not only on authors who were not separated from him by such a noticeable temporal abysm, but also a most recent author who, according to the vast majority of the definitions of the postmodern, should be entirely free of any Emersonian influence. This intricate relationship will be assessed mainly through Mason and Dixon, the most recent novel by Thomas Pynchon which reflects many aspects of what Emerson found absolutely central. The summation of what seems to be propounded throughout the entire novel is represented by the idea of determining boundaries, in both the literal and the abstract sense. Emerson himself devoted much attention to this subject matter and it is clear that Pynchon and Emerson have much in common from this perspective, which holds true to such an extent that the boundary between the postmodem and romantic is itself facing the pressure of redefinition, which is in turn a fundamental concept which both authors share.

E-learning in the Czech Republic and its Use at Secondary Schools
První část obsahuje mapování současné situace vzhledem k rozmachu informační společnosti a jejího vlivu, kterému byť i nevědomky podléháme všichni. První část vychází z historických pramenů, státní informační a komunikační politiky a reportech o situaci v českém školství.

The diploma thesis analyses the democratic deficit of the European Union. Each state which enters the European Union has to transfer a part of its sovereignty to supranational institutions. These institutions than adopt legal acts binding for all member states. The paper deals with the separation of powers in the process of adopting legal acts on the European level. The legislative power is represented mainly by the directly elected European Parliament. The diploma thesis defines the term "democratic deficit" as a weakening of the legislative power to the benefit of strengthening of the executive power on the European level and then deals with its origin and development with the emphasis on the increasing competences of the European Parliament. The last part focuses on an engagement of the European Parliament itself in an attempt of removing the democratic deficit, especially in the period after the adoption of the treaty of Nice and the entering of the Lisbon treaty into force.

Analytical evaluation of novel drug candidates from the group of iron chelators using HPLC II.
Tomalová, Kateřina ; Kovaříková, Petra (advisor) ; Kučera, Radim (referee)
High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has a dominant position among the modern techniques in both the qualitative and quantitative drugs analysis. After adequate sample preparation it is also commonly used for the determination of drugs and metabolites in biological material. This study is focused on the development and validation of a chromatographic method suitable for the analysis of 2',4'-dihydroxyacetophenon isonicotinoyl hydrazone (DHAP-INH) - a novel biocompatible iron chelator, and its application for stability evaluation of this drug candidate in rabbit plasma in vitro. DHAP-INH is among newly synthesized salicylaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone (SIH) analogues, which were prepared to improve compound stability in plasma and thus make pharmacokinetic profile of aroylhydrazones more favorable. Sufficient separation of DHAP-INH, its synthetic precursors/degradation products (2,4-dihydroxyacetophenon and isoniazide) and internal standard (SIH) was achieved on LiChrospher 100, RP-18 column (250 mm × 4,6 mm ID, 5 mm) employing a mobile phase composed of a mixture of phosphate buffer (0.01 M NaH2PO4.2H2O; 2 mM EDTA; pH 6,0) and methanol in a ratio of 54:46 (v/v). UV detection was performed at 254 and 326 nm. Different organic solvents were tested as precipitation agents, however...

František Langer as a prose-writer
