Prague grammar schools teachers during the time of so called normalisation

A professional life of secondary school teachers of Czech gymnasiums (rough equivalent of British grammar schools) in so called normalization period is presented in this thesis using autobiographical recounting, contemporary documents and archival materials. The author mentions the choosing of their careers, their studies and ensuing start of their teaching practice that took place in late sixties. Author puts emphasis on mapping of the leading role of the Communist party of Czechoslovakia in the workplace during the so called normalization period and how it was perceived by the teachers themselves. Author shows the role of the communist party using teacher's reviews, entrance examinations and complex assessments. Later on, author elaborates the mechanisms used to keep school "socialistic" up to the year 1989: controls, deliberations and meetings, schoolings, school phraseology, material provision, anniversary celebrations, voluntary works, skiing and defense courses, sister trips and teacher's role in society. In the end, the thesis maps a downfall of communist party's leading role at schools and the transition to a democratic education after the year 1989.
Media image of the Soviet Union in selected Communist and Christian Democratic weeklies during the Third Czechoslovak Republic

The paper deals with selected aspects of the media image of the Soviet Union during the Third Czechoslovak Republic. Its aim is to analyze the mechanisms of media image construction in two journals of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and in two weeklies of the Czechoslovak People's Party. Partial aim represents an effort to compare the resemblance of discourse of the USSR between Communist and Christian Democratic journals and then effort to capture eventual changes of the discourse image during the analyzed period. To achieve the objective we use method of critical discourse analysis inspired by the design from the pen of J. P. Gee. The first part presents historiographical outline of specific socio-political conditions of the Third Republic. Second, theoretical and methodological chapter provides an overview of the conceptual framework embedding that is used for the text analysis. The research part identifies that some discursive aspects of the image of the USSR in Communist and Christian Democratic conception seem to be diversifying over time, others are different from the outset. Analysis of czechoslovak social democracy in years 1916-1921

This work offers an analysis of social democracy in the Czech lands in 1916 - 1921. The aim is to describe the process and the causes of the collapse of the ČSDSD. This gave rise to the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. The study seeks to answer the question of why the Communist coup in ČSDSD failed. The introductory part deals with the historical development of the party against the background of national and world events. The main accent is set on the analysis of the two wings within the party: the left (revolutionary) and the right (reform). These wings are examined from the perspective of Giovanni Sartori and the sociologists of policy of the time, Johh Mertl and Robert Michels. This is complemented by the inclusion of the party into cleavages by Stein Rokkan and Seymour M. Lipset. The study also contains information about developments in the number of party members between 1913 and 1924, reflecting the decline in the war years and especially after the collapse of the party. The following chapter is dedicated to the strength of social democracy in the legislatures in comparison with the other Czech, respectively Czechoslovak parties. Communist Party of Czechoslovakia during the First Republic: Party Bolshevization and its Position towards the Czechoslovak Republic

Diploma thesis "Communist Party of Czechoslovakia during the First Republic: Party Bolshevization and its Position towards the Czechoslovak Republic" deals with events and processes inside Communist party of Czechoslovakia in the twenties of the 20th century, while it is mainly focused on bolshevizing pressures, which causes long series of related crises in CPC. To describe these problems, study using method of intrinsic case study. Text starts with definition of bolshevization itself, while there is attempt to unify several approaches to bolshevization. Author tries to use wide range of literature, from Communist historiography to later and foreign sources, while both are heavily combined. The text is arranged in chronological order and tries to describe bolshevization steps from several angles. The main focus is especially put on situation and processes inside party, but study does not ignore an important external factor, the interventions of Communist international to party development. In total, the thesis illustrating and describing transformation of party organizational structure and changes in program basis during twenties and early thirties and puts them in context to overall party relationship with Czechoslovak state.

The work observes changes in policy of Communist Party and in society in district of Rakovník. The main part of thesis is about August invasion in the district with its local differences. Especially complicated process of hops harvest and death of Bulgarian's soldier near Nový Dům.
Sources and Consequences of the Slovakian Political Crisis in 1947

The three years lasting postwar period in Czechoslovak history, sometimes denoted as the "Third Republic", still deserves attention of the historical research in the Czech Republic. The 1947 autumn political crisis in Slovakia is undoubtly one of the most important issues of that historical period. The aim of this thesis is to point out the sources, the process and consequences of this political crisis that is nowadays recognized as a "litmus paper" of the following "coup d'etat". First parts of the thesis analyse the collapse of the nondemocratic regime of the Slovak Republic as well as the framework of the political system of Czechoslovakia and its main features. The following part deals with circumstances of the general elections that took place in May 1946, elections, that resulted in a quite unexpected win of the Democratic Party in the Slovak part of Czechoslovakia. The political situation in Czechoslovakia deteriorated, as the year 1947 continued. It developed into a deep political crisis in autumn, preceded by a campaign against the alleged subversive complot against the state authority. Foreign art exhibitions in Prague 1945 -1953

The thesis will focus on the foreign exhibitions in Prague at prague associations and art galleries betwen yers 1945 - 1953. The heading of every one of chronologicaly sorted chapters will contain a brief insight into the political and cultural situation of Czechoslovakia, which should help the reader to grasp the whole context. The theoretical articles from relevant period will illustrate the shift from "formalism" to socialistic realism as well as types of exhibitions, their historical context and feedback they got from the czechoslovakian artistic community.
The thematic strukture of the Czechoslovak television broadcasting on February 25th in selected years of the 5th,6th,7th, and 8th decade of the 20century depending on the policy changes of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia

The thesis concerns with the broadcast structure of the Czechoslovak Television Channel 1 broadcasting on February 25th in selected years of the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th decade of the 20 century. It addresses mainly the broadcast programming, similarities and differences in the program themes. The emphasis is placed upon the evening news program and interpretation of its content. Using the information and confronting it with historical sources the thesis tries to describe the changes in the broadcasting hand in hand with the changes in the politics of the leading Czech communist party as well as with the general mood of the Czech society. The thesis results in several findings of relations between the choice of themes and the current political situation. At the end the findings are generalized into several categories of the mechanisms used by the totalitarian regime to influence the broadcasting.
