Linear semiflexible polyelectrolytes in solutions
Bačová, Petra ; Limpouchová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Lísal, Martin (referee)
Title: Linear semiflexible polyelectrolytes in solutions Author: Petra Bačová Department: Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague Supervisor: Doc. Ing. Zuzana Limpouchová, CSc. Supervisor's e-mail address: zl@vivien.natur.cuni.cz Consultant: Mgr. Peter Košovan, PhD. Abstract: In this thesis I used the Molecular dynamics simulations for study of charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) and their behaviour in solutions. Wide range of polyelectrolytes are se- miflexible and in contrast to neutral polymers it is possible to influence their stiffness by changing the properties of solution as for example ionic strength. The chain flexibility may be characterized by the persistence length. Thesis explains how to express the persistence length from orientational correlation function which shows the double exponential decay. Two contributions to chain stiffness are discussed and the interest is concentrated around electrostatic persistence length which seems to be scale dependent. An effect of added salt on the chain conformation is studied. Salt is treated implicitly within the Debye-Hückel approximation. The results are confronted with OSF theory and the conclusions of vari- ational calculations of Maghi and Netz. The presented thesis describes the conformational behaviour of polyelectrolytes in salty solutions,...

Transformations of contemporary Ukrainian immigration. Identity role and forms in the context of Ukrainian migration to Czechia
Trlifajová, Lucie ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Šatava, Leoš (advisor)
Ukrainians represent the most numerous foreign group coming to the Czech Republic. Ukrainian migration is usually described as circular and temporary. The aim of this diploma thesis is to scrutinize some of the recent changes in the Ukrainian immigration to Czech Republic, and their impact on the identity of newly establishing local Ukrainian community. Therefore the first part is focused on the questions of ethnical identity and on the transnational theory, which I based my final analysis on. The second part examines historical and social context: the development of Ukrainian nation in the twentieth century and different approaches towards minorities and foreigners in Czechia during the same period. It is also focused on transformations of migration in the Czech Republic and Ukraine after the fall of the communist regime as well as on approach towards new migration communities. Especially two Ukrainian-Czech waves of migration are being concentrated on, namely interwar political migration and a new economic migration, and their status in the Czech Republic. The thesis shows the increase in proportion of permanently settled inhabitants among the new Ukrainian migration and higher integration of this group into the local society as well as traditional Ukrainian community. The Ukrainian school in Prague,...

The Effects of Cold War Speech in the Post-Cold War World: Identification of the Enemy in the War on Terror
Hays II, George Waight Secrest ; Drulák, Petr (advisor) ; Beneš, Vít (referee)
This work is a discursive analysis exploring the effects of US presidential Cold War speech on the identification of the "Enemy." It examines the usage of metaphors in key speeches from Truman, Eisenhower, Reagan, and G.H.W. Bush in order to determine the composition and evolution of the identity of the Cold War "Enemy." This identity is then compared and contrasted to that created by the usage of metaphors concerning the War on Terror by G.W. Bush. The theory of discursive analysis used in this work stems from beginnings in philosophy several decades old. Over time, the theory of discursive analysis was honed towards many different schools and areas of study. The specific branch which this work springs from holds that language shapes political and physical reality. Coming out of this theory, this work aims to explore whether or not exposure to Cold War rhetoric had an impact over time between different administrations as well as between different conflicts. The method of analysis is an adaptation of previous methods of metaphorical analysis. Eight general conceptual metaphors are chosen as a guiding structure throughout all of the speeches. Corresponding metaphorical expressions are then gathered according to the conceptual metaphor being analyzed. The frequency of metaphorical expressions, and the...

Emblematic reductions of a writer as a literary icon or a "star"
Libichová, Tereza ; Heczková, Libuše (referee) ; Bílek, Petr (advisor)
Since the dawn of the western literary tradition the meaning and connotations of the terms and concepts of "author" and "authorship" have been changed and discussed many times. Nevertheless, the word "author" still marks someone who is responsible for the creation of a text (or, in a wider meaning, it denotes a creator of any work of art in general), even though nowadays the author is not considered in the romantic meaning of the word, with its connotations focused on biography and life of a historical individual. In current literary theory, the "author" is seen more as three different entities: a psycho-corporeal existence of the author (the "biographical" author), a subject within the text, and eventually an author-character in his own text, whose existence has become the topic of it. Such an allocation of the auctorial subject makes it possible to explore different points of intersection. However, the irrelevance of interpretation from the biographical point of view is emphasized. Therefore, one more auctorial subject is defined: a point of intersection of the "unidentifiable subject behind the text" and the "auctorial subject within the text". Such a perception of the term offers the possibility to analyze certain literary texts with an emphasis on the so-called "emblematic reductions".

The verb smět and its competitors in the corresponding modal meanings in contemporary Czech texts and Czech texts of 1550-1650
Čermáková, Alena ; Rejzek, Jiří (referee) ; Kučera, Karel (advisor)
This dissertation is dwelling on the comparison of meanings and functions of verbs (ne)smě? (may, mustn 't) and their meaning a function competitors in the Kralice Bible and in the ecumenical translation of the Holy Scriptures. It is divided into two parts. The first one tries to put (ne)smět into a wider language context. The introductory chapter is dedicated to language fields, which means of expression (ne)smět belongs to, it means to modality, voluntative modality and communicative function of speech. Various conceptions of their delimitations and divisions are shown there. The next part is dwelling on modal verbs. Their specific semantic and morfosyntactic features, the process of forming of this group of verbs and various views of the number of its members are introduced. The fourth chapter is dwelling on verbs (ne)smět, their etymology, way of their presentation in various Czech dictionaries and meanings and functions, which they expressed and express now. In the final chapter of theoretical part the theory of functional semantic field, which was one of the methodological starting points of this work, is briefly represented, then the competitors of (ne)smět in its individual meanings and functions are mentioned. The second part of the work is dedicated to the research itself. At first the...
