Milota Zdirad Polak's Sublime of Nature
Ibrahim, Robert ; Šmahelová, Hana (advisor) ; Hlobil, Tomáš (referee) ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (referee)
Sublime of Nature (1819), a lyrical poem in six cantos and with more than 1800 lines, written by a Czech poet and Austrian officer Milota Zdirad Polák (1788-1856), was at the time of its birth celebrated as the greatest Czech poem, its author labelled a genius and compared to the greatest European poets of the 18th Century. However, in the following decades Polák was gradually falling into oblivion, with literary historians of the end of the 19th and the beginning of 20th Century viewing Sublime of Nature as an unreadable work and its author as a non-poet. This attitude was also true for the 20th Century. However, in recent years some independent attempts have been made to bring Sublime of Nature back to both wider public and scholarly attention. The following dissertation joins these efforts. The aim of this dissertation is not an evaluation of Polák and his work; it is an attempt at interpretation of the text based on comparison of two versions of the poem (book and periodical) and on literary-historical setting of the work. Although Sublime of Nature appeared during a transient era of Czech literature characterized by its syncretism, this dissertation tries to relate Sublime of Nature to the context of (classicist) poetics and aesthetics of the 18th Century and in case of any borderline phenomena always...

The intersection of image and sound
Přikrylová, Katarína
The dissertation thesis is an insight into correlations between contemporary artistic modalities in acoustic and visual realms. It discusses the development dependencies and - through the spectrum of fusions and transformations of these realms - it traces forms of perception, the perceptional "patterns" which stem from synaesthesias. It also relates to practices peculiar to synaesthesia, their method of informational feeding intended for educational institutions, in the centre of which is school. It points to relational and inspirational potentialities of disciplines' contexts which are decisive in scholarly discourse on the phenomenon of perception. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

The results show that upper mantle beneath Koziíkov volcano underwent...

Experience of simultaneous interpreting into "B" languages. Interpretation in the EU institutions

The Bretton Woods monetary system 1944 - 1973

The Czech presidential election law and its comparison with presidential election amendments of European Union countries
Šutka, Pavel ; Pavlíček, Václav (referee) ; Janstová, Kateřina (referee)
The dissertation investigates a constitutional amendment to the 2012 legislation of the presidential election. The amendment introduced an election of the president through a popular vote, which was a historical milestone for the Czech legal system. However, the new adjustment was adopted in haste and evinces many deficiencies; that was proven in the 2013 presidential election. Therefore, the aim of the dissertation is to describe problematical parts of the new legal adjustment and find some possible solutions. The main topics are as follows: 1) modification of the basic concepts of the election system, 2) candidate nomination process, 3) election campaign funding and 4) ethical aspects of the election campaign. A comparison of legal adjustments of 14 EU countries with the direct presidential election (the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Croatia, Ireland, Cyprus, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Austria, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia) was done, in order to find appropriate solutions. Apart from the results of comparison, the dissertation is based on reports by GRECO, OSCE and the corresponding Czech judicature. In conclusion, the Czech adjustment of the presidential election meets every democratic principle, but, at the same time, contains many mistakes. Especially the queries of "election campaign...

Gas Microsensors Based on Self-Organized 3D Metal-Oxide Nanofilms
Pytlíček, Zdeněk ; Husák, Miroslav (referee) ; Kolařík, Vladimír (referee) ; Prášek, Jan (advisor)
This dissertation concerns the development, fabrication and integration in a gas sensing microdevice of a novel 3-dimensional (3D) nanostructured metal-oxide semiconducting film that effectively merges the benefits of inorganic nanomaterials with the simplicity offered by non-lithographic electrochemistry-based preparation techniques. The film is synthesized via the porous-anodic-alumina-assisted anodizing of an Al/Nb metal bilayer sputter-deposited on a SiO2/Si substrate and is basically composed of a 200 nm thick NbO2 layer holding an array of upright-standing spatially separated Nb2O5 nanocolumns, being 50 nm wide, up to 900 nm long and of 8109 cm2 population density. The nanocolumns work as semiconducting nano-channels, whose resistivity is greatly impacted by the surface and interface reactions. Either Pt or Au patterned electrodes are prepared on the top of the nanocolumn array using an innovative sensor design realized by means of microfabrication technology or via a direct original point electrodeposition technique, followed by selective dissolution of the alumina overlayer. For gas-sensing tests the film is mounted on a standard TO-8 package using the wire-bonding technique. Electrical characterization of the 3D niobium-oxide nanofilm reveals asymmetric electron transport properties due to a Schottky barrier that forms at the Au/Nb2O5 or Pt/Nb2O5 interface. Effects of the active film morphology, structure and composition on the electrical and gas-sensing performance focusing on sensitivity, selectivity, detection limits and response/recovery rates are explored in experimental detection of hydrogen gas and ammonia. The fast and intensive response to H2 confirms the potential of the 3D niobium-oxide nanofilm as highly appropriate active layer for sensing application. A computer-aided microfluidics simulation of gas diffusion in the 3D nanofilm predicts a possibility to substantially improve the gas-sensing performance through the formation of a perforated top electrode, optimizing the film morphology, altering the crystal structure and by introducing certain innovations in the electrode design. Preliminary experiments show that a 3D nanofilm synthesized from an alternative Al/W metal bilayer is another promising candidate for advanced sensor applications. The techniques and materials employed in this work are advantageous for developing technically simple, cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions for practical micro- and nanodevices, where the well-defined nano-channels for charge carriers and surface reactions may bring unprecedented benefits.
