La bodega by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez in two Czech translations
Zajícová, Vlasta ; Uličný, Miloslav (advisor) ; Charvátová, Anežka (referee)
The name of the Spanish prose-writer Vicente Blasco Ibáez was well known in the Czechoslovakia of the 1920s. Between 1919 and 1931 twenty of his works were published in the country, out of which sixteen were translated by Karel Vít-Veith. At that time Ibáez was a popular author in other European countries as well as in the United States where his works achieved a great success. He lived and wrote in the same period as the Spanish "Generation of 1898". Nevertheless, both his thought and his literary method differed a lot from the Generation. His late work did not reach the quality of his early prose and is considered to be effete. Our thesis focuses on the Ibáez's novel called La bodega and its two translations into Czech. La bodega was first published in 1905 and belongs to the cycle of social novels written by Ibáez between 1903 and 1905. At that time the writer's critical stances towards Spanish society, monarchy and the church were most apparent in his works. The novel was translated into Czech twice; first time by Karel Vít-Veith in 1927, second time by Václav Cibula in 1956. Our thesis starts with a chapter concerning writer's life, his work and political career which is of crucial importance for reasoning the author's popularity in the Czechoslovakia between the two world wars. The following chapter...

The a capella Compositions of Antonín Dvořák
Klárová, Barbora ; Valášek, Marek (advisor) ; Veverková, Jana (referee)
As a conclusion of this work I will try to sum up the achieved information. The complete list of the compositions belonging to the field of study could be assessed as the first success together with the details of description. Another success was the literal tracing of the newspaper articles concerning the announcements of concerts as well as reviews of those concerts in the then papers. The analyses of the compositions (see chapter No. 5) were important for the deeper insight into the topic; and an interestingly varied perspective of the problems was offered by the special questionnaire (see chapter No. 9). At the beginning of this study I set a goal of reaching a certain resuscitation of the works, their summary and bringing their charm nearer to broad audience. The synoptic list of the compositions is to be found not only within the chapter No. 3 and 4 but also No. 8, where there appear the experts' opinions concerning these works often revealing some of the backstage details. Undoubtedly, chapter No. 5 dealing with the analysis of works was a further revelation of the captivating beauty of those works. Such a detailed analysis at the same time helps the audience get a certain insight into the structure of the compositions and thus indirectly looks "over the shoulder" of the composer himself. The...

Fritz Walter Nielsen as a mediator of Czech culture

Incompatibilities: the possibility of engagement in contemporary literary theory
Černovský, Pavel ; Procházka, Martin (referee) ; Armand, Louis (advisor)
To relate question of literature, or art in general, to any notion of engagement represents a number of problems. Probably the first is the problem, manifested in the development of the avant-garde, that engagement no matter how openly defined would nevertheless end in a subordination of art to politics, accompanied by politics usurping the right to define what is art. As Theda Shapiro in her account of the relation between politics and avant-garde art points out, at the beginning: "Many artists tacitly and somewhat naively assumed that, since art has been revolutionary before the Revolution, avant-garde artists would intuitively understand what was now needed and respond to the new economic and social situation."l However, this did not prove to be the case. To a certain surprise, the initial belief that "The fine phrase 'free, unpolitical art' is not meant for you"2 has not lead to a natural and spontaneous co-operation of artists and politicians. Instead, the claim of art being necessarily part of politics in a very wide sense was soon seen to be seized by the increasingly bureaucratic apparatus pursuing "ideological needs of the moment,"3 only to be in the end transformed into a doctrine by the "1932 proclamation of 'socialist realism' as the only officially accepted art form."4 To relate literature to...

"Reflections on Religion: Richard Wright and James Baldwin"
Jirásková, Anna ; Robbins, David Lee (advisor) ; Veselá, Pavla (referee)
The thesis seeks to explore how religion is depicted in the works of two of the most influencial African American authors of the 20th century, Richard Wright and James Baldwin. The analysis takes as framework Wright and Baldwin's mutual discussions about how to properly articulate the African American experience in literature. The thesis examines an autobiographical work and a novel by each author. In Wright's case, the books that are discussed are his two-volume autobiography, which consists of a first part dealing with Wright's childhood and early youth in the American South, called Black Boy, and a second part, American Hunger, recounting his adult life in the North. Furthermore, his major novel Native Son is analyzed. In the case of Baldwin, The Fire Next Time, i.e. two essays which elaborate on different episodes from Baldwin's life, and the novel Go Tell It on the Mountain are examined. The discussion is completed by insights offered by Wright in his essay "How 'Bigger' Was Born", and by Baldwin in the essays "Everybody's Protest Novel", "Many Thousands Gone", and "Alas, Poor Richard!" The first section of the thesis deals with the criticism Baldwin advanced against Wright in several essays, in which Baldwin was suggesting that Wright's angry writings have only reinforced the discourse of the...
