German as a Mediating Language in the Translation of Hašek's Švejk into Spanish

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the reception of Hašek's Švejk in Spain in the 20th century. The theoretical part deals with the phenomenon of indirect translations (it distinguishes between the second-hand translation and the authorial compilative translation), the problematic of metatexts and the reader's reception. The empirical part describes the "adventure" of Hašek's Švejk in the Czech and German milieu and focuses on the reception of the translations by A. Janés (1980) and M. Zgustová (2008) in Spain. Then, an analysis of censorship reports dedicated to Švejk and critical reviews of Spanish translations of this book and a short commentary of interviews with the two translators and editors follow. As a methodological instrument for the micro-textual contrastive analysis of selected passages of Hašek's novel was used the Popovič's (1975, 1983) typology of stylistic shifts and changes in the translation. This thesis consists of two parts: the first one is a Czech translation of two parts of the 6th chapter from the book "Birthing Fathers: The transformation of Men in American Rites of Birth" by Richard K. Reed, the second one is an analysis of the translation. The analysis begins with an outline of the intratextual and extratextual factors of the original text (according to Christiane Nord), it is followed by an overview of the most salient issues, which emerged during the process, and their solutions, then the analysis deals with the translation shifts and ends with the description of the chosen translation method. The text itself tackles the issue of men in the pocess of birth and is based on an anthropological research. Daniel Keyes: Flowers for Algernon - Czech translations and dramatizations

The thesis looks at the Czech life of the Flowers for Algernon short story written by Daniel Keyes. It aims to present an analytical comparison of the short story translations and dramatizations created in the Czech cultural environment and to define their invariants. The theoretical part of the thesis informs the reader about the life and work of Daniel Keyes and depicts the process of creation of the short story in question. Furthermore, it outlines its main themes and stylistic features, as well as its reception both in the U. S. and abroad. Special attention is paid to the reception in Czechoslovakia, or rather the Czech Republic, namely to the two short story translations (Černý, 1976; Markus, 2003) and the three original dramatizations (Říhová, 1988; Hruška, 1993; Heger, 2010). All pieces of work are presented in their broader socio-cultural context, with due regard to their authors. This contextualisation lays the foundations for the subsequent translatological analysis, which is based on Gideon Toury's descriptive model (1995). In accordance with Toury, the Czech short stories are seen as products of the target culture. Translation of French sociological literature into Czech (cultural and linguistic aspects)

The aim of this thesis is to provide an insight into the translation of non-literary texts in social sciences from French into Czech, in terms of both cultural and social specificities, and in terms of language use. This paper defends the hypothesis that this type of translation presents unique characteristics compared to other kinds of translations, and that social science translations are currently under published. Sociology was chosen as a discipline representative of the social sciences. The first part presents an outline of the historical development of Czech sociology with regard to French influence. Underlying data was used to conduct a survey among the Czech professional sociological community to evaluate aspects of its linguistic orientation. The first part of this thesis also provides a brief overview of the production and reception of Czech translations of French sociology, with the ultimate aim to compare the "supply" of these translations to the "demand" for them and to highlight several of their specific problems and obstacles. Translation of technical texts from German into Czech

The aim of this thesis is to provide an insight into the translation of technical texts from German to Czech. The theoretical part discusses the present state of knowledge of technical translation in Czech and German speaking countries, the scientific discourse, text typology and classification of texts with regard to the context. Furthermore, this thesis describes contrasts of technical texts, and their characteristic features on a lexical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and text level. This thesis focuses on technical translation of medical texts with their most common text types and specific features, and explains implications for their translation from German to Czech. The empirical part of the thesis includes translation analysis of a chosen text type and an overview of main text types in medicine, followed by examples of parallel texts in Czech and German. To provide more objective information about translation of technical texts, a survey was carried out among translators and translation services agencies. The subsequent results were compared with the findings presented in the theoretical part. In the conclusion, this thesis summarizes the results of the research into the translation of technical texts from German to Czech with regard to medical texts and offers suggestions for further research.

Translatological Analysis of Selected Literary Texts Translated form Czech to Japanese.

The aim of this thesis is a translatological analysis of three major works of Czech literature: the play R.U.R. by Karel Čapek, the novel Babička (Grandmother) by Božena Němcová and the poems collection Maminka (Mother) by Jaroslav Seifert. The translations analyzed in this thesis were made by Kei Kurisu (one of the two R.U.R. translations, Babička), Chino Eiichi (the other R.U.R. translation) and Itaru Iijima (Maminka). I have based this analysis on two different concepts - one by Jiří Levý and the other by Peter Newmark. I focus on the translation phenomena typical for the individual literary forms (drama, prose and poetry) as well as on the phenomena that all three literary forms have in common (the instances of misunderstanding the original, the cases of interpretation (not) following the intention of the original author).

Dramatic production of Francophone African authors in Czech translation

v anglickém jazyce This thesis deals with the dramatic production of Francophone African authors and the translation of their texts into Czech. The theoretical part briefly describes the history of African drama and its specific elements. The following chapters examine the perception of this specific genre in Europe - especially in France and the Czech Republic. The thesis also documents the history of the Czech festival Africa in Creation, which has been held in Prague in the first decade of the new millennium. During its existence, it presented many African authors. Later, their plays were translated into Czech within the series The Contemporary play, published by the Arts and Theatre Institute. From the point of view of translatology, the study focuses on the general theory of the drama translation (based on the theories of translation from the 2nd part of the 20th century, especially the Czech model of Jiří Levý) and the post-colonial and cultural translation theories. In general, the aim of the study is to define the problems which the translator could be faced with translating the text from the culture which is diametrically different from the target one. Stories by Guy de Maupassant in Czech translation

In its first part, the thesis deals with Guy de Maupassant's life, the importance of short stories in his work, their reception in the French and Czech literary milieu as well as their uniqueness in the context of the literary movements of the 19th century. As a part of the thesis, an overview of the Czech translations of Guy de Maupassant's short stories is included. A separate chapter is devoted to their reception in the Czech literary context. The second empirical part focuses on the comparative critical analysis of the inital texts and their translations. The translations were chosen so that they could represent different generations of Czech translators (1902 - Pavel Projsa, 1960's - Luděk Kárl and Břetislav Štorm, 1990's - Dana Melanová). Here, the thesis deals with the skills of the translators to express the stylistic concisseness of Maupassant as well as the different stylistic levels of the original text (pathos and poetic language on one hand and informality on the other). In the conclusion, a final critical evaluation of the translations is given.

This theses focuses on Olga Krijtova (1931-2013), Czech translator from Dutch. The aim is to introduce Olga Krijtova within the framework of reception of Dutch literature in Czech cultural environment. In order to explore this framework, the thesis compares Czech and Dutch culture from translatological point of view, outlines the history of Czech-Dutch relationshiops and Dutch literary translations into Czech, as well as the history and current state of the academic discipline of Dutch studies. In the 20th century, Olga Krijtova had contributed greatly to making the Dutch literature available for Czech recipients. The thesis aims to find out how many translations done between the years 1957-2016 are Krijtova's or her students' work. Further, it summarizes her teaching and linguistic work. However, the main focus is her translation activities, which is studied by means of translation analysis in the second part of the thesis. The final aim is to review and interpret Krijtova's translation strategies and methods, as well as to assess her overall contribution to the reception of Dutch literature within the Czech environment and to the Dutch studies in the Czech Republic. French idioms containing names of body parts and their Czech equivalents.

This diploma thesis deals with french idiomatic connections that include names of human body parts. In the first theoretic part, the term "set phrase", or "idiomatic connection" is defined. Afterwards is this part also dedicated to the classification of idioms and to their internal structure and function. In the second analytic part, the selected sample of idioms is formally analyzed, i.e. according to the internal structure of an idiom and also by the semantic view (polysemy, possible interpretations, motivation). Than, the possibilities of syntactic manipulation and internal transformations of idioms are indicated. The main attention is paid to the translatological analysis of the selected sample of idioms and to the possibilities of their translation to the czech language. The aim of this diploma thesis is to observe the degree of equivalence when translating idiomatic connections, or to indicate possibilities of their translation to the czech language. The application output of this work will be the bilingual (Franco-Czech) dictionnary of corresponding idioms.
