Diversity in the newsroom: a journalist, member of an ethnic/national minority, in the czech nationwide media

The diploma thesis deals with a characteristic of a journalist, who belongs to an ethnic/national minority, in the newsrooms of nationwide media in the Czech Republic. Its aim is to explain, how the minority journalist understand their professional role and what effect their ethnic identity has on their professional self-concept in the newsroom. The work also aims to determine the extent to which the principles of diversity management are applied in the newsrooms and how the management supervisors monitor and evaluate them. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on professionalisation of the profession of journalists, their role and the construction of identity and ethnic identity of minority journalists in the newsroom. The work also represents the elements of diversity management and its application in the newsrooms. In the empirical part of the research by means of analysis of the interviews not only structure and interaction of professional and ethnic identity of the journalists in the Czech media and their tenure at the newspapers, but also a supervisors' point of view and the application of the principles of the diversity management in the area of Czech nationwide media are evaluated. External influences on Bulgarian Muslims

The paper "External influences on Bulgarian Muslims" describes what affects the belief of Pomaks (Bulgarian-speaking Muslims) and Bulgarian Turks; first, the assimilation campaigns during the 20th century, second, the new foreign policy of Turkey and third, the work of charity organizations connected with Saudi Arabia. The objective of this paper is to explain, why the Pomaks lean towards a fundamentalist form of Islam - Wahhabism - in some towns and villages. In order to do that the text describes bulgarization campaigns aimed at the Pomaks and Turks and introduces both of these ethnic groups that together form 13 % of the Bulgarian population. The paper then describes the Turkish influence in the Balkans, especially the work of the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs (the so called Diyanet). The second foreign influence that is described in this text are the activities of Saudi Arabian organizations which are explained at large, including the connection of some of these organizations with terrorists and the ways in which they try to spread the fundamentalist Islam. "Our Minorities (later Our Boundaries), an interwar magazine supporting Czech minority in nationally mixed regions of Nord-East Bohemia" presents for the first time a longer embracive characterization of a First Republic periodical, seated in Malé Svatoňovice, and published between 1920-1938 (XVII and XVIII volumes already as Our Boundaries). This thesis uses a method of historical analysis and besides of information about publishing, personalities connected with this monthly paper (particularly J. M. Vlček) and contents of sections, recognizing how this already not very known regional serial wanted to support Czech minorities in a mainly German speaking borderline area.
Analysis of the Representation of Sexual Minorities in Marvel Comics

The topic of this work is the analysis of development of the LGBT minority in Marvel comics. Action, appearance, relations, speech and story-lines of characters are to be used as semiotic resources and analysed using tools of visual studies and social semiotics. Visual anthropology, semiotics and sociology will serve as the main theoretical base. This work aims to identify changes of representation of said minorities in the context of social and cultural changes in American society.

In the bachelor work Media image of squatter in the Czech press I focuse on imaging minority of squatters in July - August, 2009. In these months, the media reported about squatting in connection with the eviction of Prague villa Milada in Trója on 30th June 2009. I chose Czech print media as the subject of my research. I examine thematic focus of the studied articles, form of protruding actors and other essentials of researched texts by the method of content analysis. In the theoretical part I pursue the mechanism of media, imaging minorities and brief definition of squatting.
Shakespearean Minorities: Myth, Prejudice and Transformation

The thesis is concerned with the portrayal of the minorities in William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and Othello, the Moor of Venice. By means of close reading and the compare-and-contrast approach, the two main minority representatives - Shylock in The Merchant of Venice and Othello in Othello - are analysed from various perspectives. A special attention is paid to the comparison of the way they are presented to the audiences and the way they present themselves; how do they operate in the majority society and how their identities transform throughout the plays. The introductory chapter defines the key terms relevant for the thesis, the structure of the thesis and its main goals. Chapter 1 provides an insight into the perception of Jews and Moors in the European context from the Middle Ages up to the Early Modern period. Special attention is paid to the variety of popular stereotypes, prejudices and myths circulating in England and how are these reflected in the portrayal of the two minorities in the literature of the period. The main focus in Chapter 2 is on the analysis of the mutual relationship between the majority and the Other in the two plays, on the respects in which the Other is differentiated from and distanced by the majority and how these two groups coexist in the given context....
The relationship of the Russian Federation to Russian minorities in the "near abroad"

Thesis "Relationship of the Russian Federation to the Russian minorities in the ‚Near Abroad'" deals with attitude of Russia to the minority, which was created after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The members of this minority are consisted of Russians who migrated within union state and after its breake up became a minority of the new succession states. During the 1990s the minority issue was integrated into the foreign policy discourse until it became, under Putin, one of the central elements of Russian foreign policy. The paper analyzes the government rhetoric in the statements and strategic documents published between 1991 - 2008 and confronts them with examples of Russian reaction to conflicts in post-Soviet states linked to Russian minority. The thesis is divided into three sections. The first part presents the position of minorities in the newly formed states and historical development of diaspora issue in the Soviet Union. The second part provides the overall picture of Russian foreign policy focused on the Near Abroad as well as a list of normative acts, which consist proposals to solution of minority issue. and key words Annotation in Czech This thesis deals with multicultural aspects in teachers' work. In addition, the survey provides a certain historical context related to the education of minorities in the Czech Republic before 1989, and describes the current situation in the area of multicultural education in our country. It examines how teachers should be equipped to deal with situations linked to multicultural education and what teaching methods teachers use to motivate pupils. In the practical part, it shows examples of several lessons in which teachers work with broad topics of multicultural education. It also contains an overview of several case studies based on experience. The work should contribute to a greater discussion of the subject.
