The power of self-delusion in Eugene O'Neill's Long day's journey into night and Arthur Miller's Death of a salesman
Klupková, Petra ; Ulmanová, Hana (referee) ; Wallace, Clare (advisor)
Arthur Miller and Eugene Gladstone O'Neill both established themselves as major theatrical icons in America, also earning an international prestige as influential playwrights. While O'Neill is one of the most prominent playwrights America has seen at the turn of the 19th century, Miller markedly stands out from the generation that immediately followed. Their dramatic achievements were recognized both by the audience and the critics, resulting in the highest critical acclaim both in the form of various prestigious awards, O'Neill becoming the first American dramatist to receive the Nobel Prize, as well as causing remarkable controversy. The two plays that are to be examined, Miller's Death of a Salesman and O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night, have both been praised as the authors' finest pieces of writing, and both received the Pulitzer Prize, O'Neill's fourth one, only this time awarded posthumously. Miller himself expressed his admiration to O'Neill's work, as he marked him his "favorite playwright" in an 1957 interview, referring to Long Day's Journey as to a "masterpiece." Even though it might seem that Miller's work draws richly upon the legacy of O'Neill, he refuses any influence of his upon his own writing.1 A similar respect can be seen with T.S. Eliot, who paid tribute to O'Neill by claiming...

Josef Karásek (1868-1916) in the context of Czech Slavic Studies and the Czech literary scene in Vienna (On the participation of Vienna in inter-Slavic cultural relations from the founding of the Jagić Seminary to the birth of Czechoslovakia)
Černý, Marcel ; Hauptová, Zoe (advisor) ; Petrbok, Václav (referee) ; Tureček, Dalibor (referee)
This dissertation is divided into two parts. The first part (2. VIENNA AND CZECH LITERATURE) is devoted to the interaction between the city of Vienna and modern Czech culture, primarily literature. The second part (3. VIENNA AND CZECH SLAVIC STUDIES) is oriented toward the problematic of the history of Slavic Studies, the area of Slavic philology which, as a meta-discipline, deals with the self-reflection of its own subject. Specifically, both the initiative of the "Jagić concept" of Slavic philology for Czech Slavic Studies as it was eventually reflected in Karásek's specialized activities and the panoramic outline of the way in which Jagić's work was perceived and absorbed in the Czech surroundings are the subject of consideration. However, this study is not a "classic" monograph in the narrow sense of the word. Josef Karásek, who was a literary historian, editor, translator, and promoter of Slavic literatures in the German-speaking world, was not a central personality in the history of Czech Slavic Studies. Yet on the other hand, considering the rather strong echo of his work in Czech, Viennese and other Slavic research communities, and in spite of the partial research eclecticism of his work, it cannot be said that Karásek was a mere journalist and author of compilations. His extensive estate, which was...

The full generation of peace and the Sino-American rapprochement, 1969-1976
Bečka, Jan ; Calda, Miloš (advisor) ; Fojtek, Vít (referee)
In this thesis, several key issues will be discussed which significantly influenced the American foreign policy during the Nixon and Ford presidencies. The very system of foreign-policy-making which Nixon instituted together with Kissinger and which gave crucial powers and control over the American diplomacy into the hands of the president and his national security advisor is one such factor worthy of consideration. Nixon, who harbored a deep mistrust for the Department of State, did all he could to marginalize its role and even to keep his own Secretary of State, William Rogers, in the dark about the real American foreign policy objectives. Nixon also had a penchant, which he shared with Kissinger, for secret, backstage diplomacy, which proved especially important in dealing with such countries as the PRC or the Soviet Union. Most of the important negotiations and talks were shrouded in a cloak of confidentiality and were only presented to the public when Nixon was sure of their success. In this way, Nixon, like Kissinger, was building his image of a master diplomat and negotiator who was indispensable for the United States and whose skill greatly improved the deteriorating American position in the world. Vliv interakce daňového a dávkového systému na pracovní úsilí OSVČ
Fritzsche, Vít ; Pavel, Jan (advisor) ; Klazar, Stanislav (referee)

Study of the microRNAs in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
Hudcová, Kristýna ; Šulc, Miroslav (referee)
Searching for markers of disease is at the forefront of scientific interest. Biomarker of a specific disease should help in disease management - whether for diagnosing a disease or predicting its progress. We picked microRNAs - short RNAs that regulate mRNA translation, due to their stability and function in the regulation of many cellular processes. Therefore they can be used as a biomarker for many diseases. In our study we focused on neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), since this type of cancer is widespread and clinically important markers are missing. It is in our interest to seek new kinds of markers, suitable for early diagnosis of the disease and the most accurate assessment of prognosis. We selected 3 candidate miRNA (miR-29c-3p, miR-200b-5p, miR-375-3p) and used qRT-PCR method to profile their expression in tissues of patients with HNSCC. MiRNA expressions in 42 tumor samples were compared with the miRNA expression in adjacent tissue of the tumor. Adjacent tissue surrounds the tumor and has interesting properties, as it looks like a histological normal tissue, but on closer inspection it is not. It is affected by tumor tissue and may contribute to tumor progression. We managed to distinguish between these two tissues using miR-29c-3p and miR-375-3p. Additional analyzes were focused on...

Ancient astrology: signs of zodiac

Southeast Asian Englishes and their perception
Bukraba, Maria ; Matuchová, Klára (advisor) ; Bojarová, Marie (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to prove that words from Southeast Asian varieties of English which were included in Oxford English Dictionary bear a unique meaning and thus are indispensable. Theoretical part depicts a classification of Englishes by Braj Kachru and later explores historical and socio-political aspects of English in countries where it is spoken by a large part of population such as Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Hong Kong which technically belongs to East Asia, but for the linguistic purposes it is included in the list. The practical part examines lists of words included in Oxford English dictionary from the mentioned varieties of English with the aid of local context such as magazines, blogs, newspapers and other unofficial sources. On the basis of the results of this research, it can be concluded that words from Southeast Asian varieties of English are irreplaceable due to their distinctive meaning.

Last part of this paper focuses on the macroeconomic and politic analysis of the current United Kingdom using the basic macroeconomic indexes such as GDP per capita, unemployment rate and total GDP. This part also briefly mentions the so-called BREXIT.

The effects confrontation of the aerobic and yoga activities upon the cardiovascular system of the college students with the emphasison the preventive health programs and life style optimalization
KOKEŠ, Radim
The aim of this thesis is to find and compare the physical fitness level of the college students in relation to the aerobic and yoga activities. I also aimed to explore the effects of these activities on the cardiovascular system of women, and to determine the physical load improvement which could influence the health condition and lifestyle in a positive way. 237 students of the University of South Bohemia in ČeskéBudějovice participated in the research. They were 20 up to 23 years old and they were divided into two groups according to their hobbies. They underwent the two-term long physical programs - the aerobic one and the yoga one. To compare the results of these programs I used the anthropometric and motometric methods and a questionnaire as well - BMI, Ruffier´s test, T-test, Spearman´s correlation coefficient and the circadian rhythm, lifestyle, emotional state and self-image based questionnaire. The statistic analysis of gained data shows a considerable change as for the Ruffier index of physical fitness, and this is just a result of the intervention physical program use within both of the experimental groups as for the level of importance p<0,001. These results confirm the hypothesis H1 and H3 and a contributive effect on the physical fitness of the college students either. BMI of the experimental aerobic group also shows an important change as for the level of importance p<0,01. This result confirms the hypothesis H2 and the fact that the aerobic program has a contributive effect on the BMI as for the ES. As for the experimental yoga group, there were not seen any changes and therefore the hypothesis H4 was not confirmed either. The circadian rhythm questionnaire analysis shows that due to the physical stress, these students often face depressions. The gained data show a low level of cardiovascular indicators as for the entrance measurement, and a significant improvement during a regular intentional use of proper physical exercises - both aerobic and yoga ones. This is very important for the preventive health programs and the active lifestyle of women during their college studies.
