Fin-de-siècle Elements in Flann O'Brien's Novel The Third Policeman

This thesis concerns the similarities between Flann O'Brien's novel The Third Policeman and fin-de-siècle literature, more specifically decadent literature and literature of the early avant-garde. The fact that, apart from metafiction, O'Brien's novel does not deal with aesthetics (neither when it comes to the form nor when it comes to the topic) does not invalidate the presence of fin-de-siècle elements or strategies in it; the elements only change and thus adapt to their new environment. Many of them become ironic, other ones actively contribute to the metafictional scope of the novel. The first chapter explains the parallels between The Third Policeman and fin- de-siècle literature in general. It concentrates primarily on decadent literature and its central theme of "unnaturalness." Unnaturalness occurs in variegated forms, such as artifice, artificiality or make-believe. Unnaturalness can be detected also in the protagonists themselves and even (in compliance with the metafiction of the novel) in the form of O'Brien's hellish world where the narrator finds himself. Visions and Beliefs of Three Generations of the Czech Avant-garde (1919-1989)

Aim of this work is to make a comparison of three generations (1918 - 1989) of discourse art theorists and to point to their similarity. Specifically, the main personalities and spokespersons of Czech avant-garde art and underground, who are Karel Teige, Vladimír Boudník, Egon Bondy, Milan Knížák and Ivan Martin Jirous. This work analyses the content the interpretive models which are contained in the manifestos and manifestations text (Chapter 2) and reconstruction experience and feeling of historical avant-gards based on work with ego-documents (Chapter 3). The result of this analysis is a description of the differences (and dynamics) of development of avant-garde, but especially characteristic of avant-garde and underground mental world. The analysis shows that the artistic avant-garde (Teige) and underground (Jirous, Knížák), as well as the second generation standing on the edge of the avant-garde and underground (Boudník, Bondy) show great similarity with many common features. Biebl's Collection S lodí jež dováží čaj a kávu and its Context (the Exoticism of the Avant-garde)

This work's main concern is the analysis of the transformation of exoticism motives in Konstantin Biebl's S lodí jež dováží čaj a kávu. The interpretations of the text follow the context of the avant-garde exoticism in the era after World War I. The analysis is supported with motives of exoticism in Biebl's works from the 20's, and also with two works of his contemporaries: Jaroslav Seifert's collection of poems Na vlnách TSF and Vítězslav Nezval's Exotická láska. Concept of the Neo-Avant-Garde in Peter Bürger's Theory of the Avant-Garde and following critical reaction by B. Buchloh and H. Foster

The thesis deals with the question of the relationship between historical avant-garde movements and the repetition of its main artistic strategies in the neo-avant-garde after the Second World War. The primary resource to deal with this topic is the theory of Peter Bürger, because his book Theory of the Avant-garde represents a very influential and complex conception of the relationship between the two phenomena. Bürger's harsh critique of the neo-avant-garde, which he derives from his concept of the meaning and intentions of the historical avant-garde, is criticised in particular by Benjamin Buchloh and Hal Foster, two American critics of contemporary art. The aim of the thesis is to show, on the grounds of Buchloh's and Foster's critique, the usefulness of Bürger's conception when theorizing neo- avant-garde phenomena and its relationship with the historical avant-garde movements.

1 Abstract The thesis "The image of a woman in the press at interwar Czechoslovakia" deals with the visual presentation of a woman who was an integral part of the First Republic press. The thesis attempts to provide an analysis of selected periodicals (magazines especially for women) in terms of the depiction of women. The thesis surveys the changes in society and lifestyle in this epoch of our history which complements the cultural-historical background of the time and familiarity with contemporary press. The thesis focuses primarily on issues of women's emancipation, which were at that time very current and projected also into all areas of the art. Emancipation influenced significantly the whole Czech artistic creation. We can find some evidence especially in the press, which also mediated the reflection of period. The thesis focuses only on the most important press at these times with regard to its scope. Eva revue was especially important for emancipatory efforts and is compared here with men's magazine Gentleman and avant-garde magazine ReD. The main part of the thesis focuses on the actual image of women, generally and in specific cases. ! This bachelor thesis comprises two main parts. The first part features the Czech translation of a preface and a selected chapter from Die Geschichte der Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert, a book written by a German art historian Uwe M. Schneede. In the second part of the thesis, the translation is provided with a translation commentary. In the commentary, a translation-oriented analysis is carried out, followed by setting of the translation approach and method. Furthermore, translation problems at lexical, morphosyntactic, stylistic and pragmatic levels including proposed solutions are described. Finally, translation shifts are categorised in regard to the translated text.
The Hidden Avant-Garde. Czech Avant-Garde Fiction between Individualism and Collectivism

in English This work focuses on the Czech afterwar avant-garde and its fiction in the wider European context. The main goal of our writing was diversifying literary historical field by integrating genre of short story and its authors into the interpretive frame of the prepoetistic avant-garde. We could intrude a canonic picture of the Czech avant-garde by enriching the interpretive frame of the new genre (short story) and new, often hardly known or forgotten, writers. Last but not least by doing so we were able to questioned and problematized basic oppositions such as expressionism × avant-garde, and mainly individualism × collectivism. We introduce the principal opposition individualism × collectivism, which in our opinion, organizes afterwar literary discourse, as a main connecting line between Czech avant-garde art and European art (collective and one of its manifestation - crowd, as one of the main themes of modernism and avant-garde). We interpretate beyond this scope the fictions of French unanimism as the main inspiration of the Czech afterwar avan-garde and its (collective) fiction as well.
Reflection of Sexuality in Toyen's Work From the Perspective of Art Criticism

Toyen and sexuality is a frequent topic of art history texts written about the artist in the last twenty years. Toyen provoked with her erotic drawings and illustrations, her appearance and mysteriousness shrouded around her. Where did the roots of her desire, depicted in her work, came from? What was the role played by contemporary context? How her contemporaries wrote about sexuality? Were there any interpretations of the artist's work based on the known information about her person or personality? What was the Toyen's position as a woman? The empirical part of my thesis is based on research, where I try to seek for answers to the questions found in the texts published in Czechoslovakia. The research is bounded by years 1922-1947. Years when Toyen entered respectively left the Czech art scene. Her work has therefore been interpreted by persons who lived in the same cultural context, some of them were actually her personal acquaintances. I will also try to answer the question whether the contemporary texts differ from the texts written after 1989, eventually how. Within the examining the reflection of sexuality in the work of Toyen I will also ask myself whether the perspectives of view are different in the eyes of men and women. Jan Kotík 1916-2002 - A Monograph

1 Abstract A monograph on Jan Kotík (1916-2002) introduces both his art and theoretical work, it deals with a historical and cultural context of the now-defunct Czechoslovakia. Kotík's - an artist's, theoretician's, published author's, educator's - artwork enjoys a prominent position in the context of Czech art of the second half of 20th century. An art-historical assessment of artwork was based on Kotik's artwork inventory and on all the documentation on Kotik's life and art work archived in the Documentation Department of the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the CR and in private archives in the CR and Berlin. The study is based on a method of organic combination of biographical data and art-historical data with quotation of Kotik's theoretical texts. An evolution of artist's work is demonstrated chronologically with the context to Czech and world art. The monograph includes chapters: "Father Pravoslav's Art Studio and Study Years", "Art Group 42", "Possibilities of Applied Art", "Painting-Object", "Stay in Berlin", "Returns".
Visual Poetry in the Network of the International Communication. Terms, Categories, Typology

The doctoral thesis is concerned diachronically with the term "visual poetry". The focus is on its progress during the period after the Second World War in the context of the extensively advanced movement, as substantially defined in international expert discussion. The use of the term, which is supported by the arguments of many theoreticians and artists of the period, is studied in the thesis from the viewpoint of the inspirational sources and specific contacts between art and literature. The focus is on the specific positions and strategies of visual perception. Visual poetry is studied - considering the different contexts of the European avant-garde movements and through the analysis of contemporaneous theories which defined three main lines of thought - as an incoherent art stream manifesting itself in the eclectic use of artistic media. In conclusion, the thesis looks at the project of Czech author poetics typology which grew from purely Czech examples based on formal language of the visual poetry works. The thesis seeks to point out the original aspects of the internal discussion of visual poetry, and to place it in the international context.
