Valentová, Marie ; Hrůzová, Andrea (advisor) ; Láb, Filip (referee)
Contemporary constantly expanding content of social media like Instagram brings the medium of photography to new contexts. Photography becomes an instrument of immediate communication and its historically defined functions are an object of change. The continuity of Instagram content creating, the personal perspective of its users, the constant presence of camera accompanying them are aspects analogous to the artwork of Nan Goldin. Goldin's photo essay The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1986)has a character of visual diary that captures the life of her community with almost obsessive continuity. It's also captured from deeply personal perspective depicting intimate moments and describing Goldin's personal relationships. Publishing of The Balladand formation of Instagram is divided by more than twenty-five years and both events and its meanings are profoundly different. This thesis nevertheless presumes that comparison of these, in many aspects alike phenomenons can help describe the change of the function of the media of photography, explore contemporary tendencies in photography aesthetics, the meaning of instagram's content to its users and provide general understanding of the role of shared photography in social and historical context. The methods of comparison are semiotic visual analysis,...

VANDERKOVÁ, Andrea
This work provides a detailed analysis of three works by René Magritte based on the theoretical background of Visual Culture Studies and Semiotics. Since these disciplines still need to be better established in Czech research, the first part of the thesis is devoted to creating of theoretical background relevant to the interpretation of Magritte's works. In addition to this part aiming at the issue of human perception of images in general, the thesis also deals with the interpretation of selected works and the dynamics of the relation between word and image that had influenced Magritte's work. Based on the interpretation of Magritte's work, I try to illuminate the ways in which we perceive images and evaluate the world through them.

Petrlová, Simona ; LEDVINA, Josef (advisor) ; JANOŠČÍK, Václav (referee)
Cuteness as an affect contains a group of visual and behavioral features which are capable of producing physical or emotional reactions in the body of a subject.  Speaking of cuteness as an aesthetic category this kind of response is manipulated for commercial purposes, in the context of artistic creation or as means of self-expression.  In my thesis I will be concetrating on the concept of cuteness and its use in the field of contemporary art. First I will focus on the origin of the notion of cuteness from psychobiological, sociological and culturological point of view. I will describe briefly the origin of the english term ''cute'' and japanese term ''kawaii'' and its evolvement. Than I will concentrate on the aspects of cuteness in today's society, where it has become a tool for advancement of commercial and even political interests, which will be desrcibed on the  specific examples.   Subsequently I will concentrate on the aesthetic aspects of cuteness in the context of contemporary artistic statements including sociological and lorenzian (biological) viewpoints. I will also describe these aesthetics and its usage in the field of hi-tech technologies. Cuteness can be differentiated into many subcategories (e.g. ''creepy-cute'', ''torturer-cute'', ''sexy-cute'', etc.) when speaking of its aesthetics. These will be briefly described and showed in both the theoretical and exemplary sections of the thesis. As a whole the thesis will also lead to the discussion of the artistic positions of particular artists working with cuteness aesthetics in their art production.
