Reasons abuse and the influence of illegal substances in bodybuilding
DRAHOKOUPILOVÁ, Michaela
The topic of my bachelor thesis is "Reasons abuse and the influence of illegal substances in bodybuilding". Today, people can choose from many accessible sports activities and one of them is fitness. In the area of bodybuilding, there are many dietary supplements that could be bought easily on specialised e-shops as well as in stores. But the accessible substances and dietary supplements are not the only ones which are used. Men trying to build muscle mass use prohibited substances or at least they have already heard about them. These substances are used in body-building even though the health problems appear during using them. The theoretical part of my thesis is focused on the issue of doping in body-building. Firstly, the historical development of doping in sport is offered. Further, the thesis describes the groups of pharmacological prohibited substances that support the sportsman to achieve the stated goals. The prohibited methods are connected to the prohibited substances; the fourth chapter discusses these methods. The most important chapter of this thesis is about the health consequences appearing during the using of doping. This chapter is supported by the research that was focused on the awareness of sportsmen about doping and their experiences of changes after using the prohibited substances. The basic of the practical part of the thesis is a qualitative research made by qualitative strategy in data collection. The aim of my research was to map the awareness of sportsmen and their experiences of changes after using the prohibited substances. The following questions were used: Under what circumstances do sportsmen meet the prohibited substances for the first time? Under what circumstances do they use them? What is the knowledge of sportsmen about the illegal substances? What changes do the sportsmen experience after the using illegal substance? The data was collected by a nonstandard semi-structured interview with men practising bodybuilding. The interviews were with the agreements of sportsmen recorded on a dictaphone and then rewritten into the written form and by using the method of paper and pencil they were coded. From created categories, subcategories and codes the schemes showing the information were created. For instance, the reason for using the prohibited substances is because of muscle building. Another scheme of the most used prohibited substances shows the majority of using anabolic steroids that are supported by the scheme showing the health consequences appearing during the using these substances. From the data, it is clear that the changes either positive or negative are experienced by the sportsmen in terms of their physical and psychological condition as well as in their social perception. Thanks to the collected data the aims of this thesis were achieved.
