Today's chateau owners - searching for roots or good investment?
Jungmanová, Petra ; Vaněk, Miroslav (advisor) ; Georgiev, Jiří (referee)
The diploma thesis, which is based on terrain oral-historical research, presents the phenomenon of chateau owners who bought the property from a town government or restituers after 1989 and therefore became the new lords. The issue presented in the title of the thesis is interpreted from eleven stories of selected owners - specifically what motivation the owners had to buy the property, whether it was their dream or a business plan, or whether they wanted to make altruistic deeds. Not only is this study focused on the motivation of the owners to buy a chateau, but the attention is drawn as well to financial issues, state recognizing the property as cultural inheritance, the meaning and future of the castle in the twenty-first century, the matter of the next generations inheriting the property, or pondering about a likely establishment of a new Czech noble class. The result of this work is a complex summary presenting what it takes to own a chateau in the twenty-first century.

The beginnings of clubbing in Prague
Kazdová, Darina ; Vaněk, Miroslav (advisor) ; Houda, Přemysl (referee)
This piece of work was meant to be countinuous to my bachelor's thesis. In that essay I was dealing with the history of Czech electronic dance music in general. This time I focused just on Prague and surrounding area. The Czech capital was deeply influenced by presence of tourists. After the Velvet revolution, they were suddenly able to visit Prague. And as they they were already familiar with electronic music, they could help to spread it here. The situation in Prague is also compared with the rest of the world (western civilization). In the first part of the essay, I describe the qualitative research and the method I have used, which is the oral history. I also enclose a brief vocabulary of frequently used terms that are not very well known to the greater audience, I suppose. The last part is the analysis of the interviews itself. The interviews were done with important narrators.

The main target of the work is to extend our current knowledge concerning history of the Czechoslovak Ocean Shipping company during the period from the company's founding in 1959 until year 1989. The main basis for this task fulfillment there are interviews with former Czechoslovak sailors realized with help of the oral history method. Beside this, the paper is supported also by archive materials. The text reflects certain specificity of the topic (maritime business running in the inland country, in addition country ruled by non-democratic regime) and it aims to the company's history; but its main part is concentrated on the sailors' living conditions. It processes direct testimonies about sailors' life and work on Czechoslovak ships; there are included topics as travelling, emigration, direct experience with communist regime on ships, private life of sailors, and their father and husband role. The author does not propose definite conclusions; her effort is aimed to see the topic from various points of view. The Abstract The main focus of the diploma thesis named "GULAG as a life experience" is on the Soviet repressive system in the era of 30's to 50's of the 20th century. There are two approaches in this thesis: the first one is concerning the narrating and memory, the other point of view is the topics reflecting in the narrations. Both, oral and written stories are used, the written ones are prevailing. In the third chapter, I deal with the topic of human memory and its relation to history and telling about past. I am posing the question concerning the relation between memory and society, memory and history, how do the people conceive their narrations, what sort of language tools and schemes of telling do they use and what the differences between oral and written narrations are. This empirically focused part of the thesis is forgone by a theoretical part dealing with the mentioned topics. All is illustrated by using examples from the life stories of survivors. The other main topic is discussed in the eighth chapter, dealing with topics often appearing in the memories of the survived people. As well as in the other part I am using here the examples of the life stories for better illustration of the explained topic. The subtopics are divided into five groups: "time and space", "death and suicide", "strategies...
