Discourse analysis of creation of public space in Prague

The central idea of this diploma thesis is perception of public space as something unnatural. Its existence and functioning is affected by its users. However, in society there are many interest groups, which have some requirements on public space and try to imprint theirs notions into it. One such attempt could be document Strategie rozvoje veřejných prostranství hl. m. Prahy/ návrh, which presents itself as revolutionary document of development, that its content should be in accordance with interests of community. But is it really so? Accepting the principles of social constructivism and using discourse analysis as main research method we should be able to say 1) how in this document is presented public space of Prague and its creation and 2) how visions of this document (its authors) are distinct form public discourse. The result of this diploma thesis should be to determine whether the content of document is really written in accordance with interests of inhabitants of Prague and if it's really so unique, as it says. Gender blending and queer performativity in the music videos of Lady Gaga

This bachelor thesis examines how queer performativity and gender blending are shown in the music video clips of Lady Gaga. The thesis attemp to find and analyse through the means of the semiotic analysis and explain their meaning. The thesis is based on theoretical gender definition and on two constructivism concepts: Doing gender by West and Zimermann and gender performativity by Judith Butler. The thesis employs the queer concept as the reconstruction of sexual minorities but also as an analytic lens that deconstructs the normative social structure. The author defines the various elements leading to gender blending and queer performativity in four music videos clips and concluded that Lady Gaga repeatedly violates gender stereotypes and disturbs the majority view on heteronormative social settings by using specific videos elements representing different kinds of sexuality in her music videos.

Social Housing in the Czech Republic - The Story of one Law

Diploma thesis "Social Housing in the Czech republic - a story of one law" deals with an issue of attempting to adopt a law of social housing in the Czech Republic. The thesis is based on historical institutionalism approach that identifies institutions as the essential factors on development of an enviroment where the formulations of design of the social housing policy come from. The analytical part follows a pattern of social constructivism and applies the features of discoursive analysis. The conclusions drawn from the analysis indicate that there are two dominant discoursive frames which influence the public policy debates on how to deal with the problem of non-existence of social housing in the Czech Republic. One discoursive frame points out the liberal perspective which is based broadly speaking on economical calculus and importance of individual deservedness. The second - social - frame promotes the principles of social cohesion and solidarity with the most vulnerable groups in society. These perspectives influence the shapes of suggested policy arrangements that are presented as a solution of an inaccesability of housing for specific groups in society and most likely determine possible controversions in the future.

World of Cerebral Palsy

- Miroslav Kudláček "World of Cerebral Palsy" The aim of this project is to describe a process how people suffering from Cerebral palsy are getting to know their own disability. It is characteristic for this disease that its first symptoms develop not later than one year after the birth. So if follows that this man/child does not have a chance to gain any kind of experience of what it means "to be healthy". Therefore his point of view as far as his disability is concerned is completely different from those people who, for example, have had a car accident. The paper therefore intends to deal with a cognitive process how such disabled individuals cope with this problem. Theoretical part will be based on social constructivism (Berger, Luckmann, Kabele) and Piaget's "psychology of development". Methodological part should consist of interviews with people with Cerebral palsy which they will analyzed by concept Grounded Theory.

Cancer as a source of fright and how patiens with tumour illness learn to work with their illness

This thesis is focused on an important problem of today, which is cancer. It describes this deceitful sickness from social point of view, suggesting what impact cancer has on living in a society and on the position of the sick people inside the society. Cancer is connected with strong connotations, which are constructed by the media and society's point of view. It is primarily the status of a "fighter", which is a dominant consensus for communication inside a family and for the view of the cancer patient. Patient with cancer, alias "fighter" is a men, who has cancer, but doesn't stop being active, he fights with cancer and doesn't forgot his live. He works and has social life and etc. This behavior is expected from him by his family and close people, but cancer is a sickness, which .causes pain and fears about patient's own life very often, so the cancer patient must struggle not only with the sickness, but also with fulfilling the expectations of the role of the "fighter" for his or her close people. Typing schemes of two generations, or what's the role of our age in evaluation of strengers in everyday reality

This work's focus is on research of processes, which we absolutely naturaly and subconsciensely use in everyday reality to evaluate people and situations. It's conserne is describing this proces and furtheron researching the evaluation of unknown people in praxis, mostely from the point of view that evalution can be infuenced by the age of respondent. Main theoretical groung of this work is social constructivism, mostely because we have our statement towards most of all everyday situations and actions just because these exist, therefore are construct of that given society. Furtheron this work focuses on hierarchical organising of these valuating processes, as is typization and categorization and statement based on these. Most of all this work describes differences in evaluating unknown people using photographic interviews of two different age groups of respondents. Data analysis shows, that age and even sex of respondents really does matter in evaluating of unknown people.

NATO in the fight against terrorism and the formation of collective identity

Diploma thesis "NATO in the fight against terrorism and the formation of collective identity" deals with the impact of the threat of international terrorism on collective identity of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The September 11th terrorist attacks on the US soil constitute a milestone in the history of NATO. The article 5 of Washington treaty was invocated for the first time. The main argument of the thesis states that, despite disagreements among allies about the role of the Alliance in the fight against terrorism after the September 11th , NATO was capable of reinforcing its collective identity and reformulating its purpose. The main goal of the thesis is to define a relationship between the perception of the threat of terrorism within NATO and collective identity of NATO, on the basis of arguments of social constructivism and with constructivist methodology. Discourse analysis of key NATO documents confirms the impact of September 11th on the transformation of strategic consideration of the Alliance, which has led to initiation of several efforts to fight terrorism. Media (Re)Construction of Collective Memory: October and November as a Support for the Contemporary Czech National Identity

The bachelor thesis "Media (Re)Construction of Collective Memory: October and November as a Support for the Contemporary Czech National Identity" focuses on relation between mass media, collective memory and national identity. In accordance with social constructionism theory, the terms collective memory and national identity are understood as social constructs whereas mass media is considered to be one of the social construction agents. The aim of this work is to analyse a variety of media interpretations on significant Czech history events - October 28, 1918 and November 17, 1989. Analysed are newspaper commentaries published in order to commemorate these events during the eleven- year period from 1998 to 2009. As a resource for the analysis I have chosen three Czech daily newspapers - Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny and Mladá fronta DNES. The research method used is media qualitative content analysis. The work objective is to examine the typical media discourses based on national history which are constructed in a way to support contemporary Czech national identity. Not only does this thesis consist of research, it also includes methodology and theoretical framework.

The Socialization of Czech Political Actors. The Attitude of Czech Politicians towards the Iraq Invasion in 2003

In the 1990s when enlargement of Euro-Atlantic organizations was slowly becoming reality, a theory exploring interaction between an organization and its member states gradually resigned from primary perception of the state as a socialized actor (socializee) and this concept was substituted by the notion of political actors. It was the theory of socialization that became more and more important in terms of examining impact of political organizations on political representatives of Member States, their behaviour and possible interaction between them. This recent and dynamic theory was often confronted with obstacles, especially in terms of its theoretical anchoring. Even within the framework of ongoing academic debate, this theory did not obtain clear recognition. Researches examining causal relationship between socialization and subsequent behaviour of politicians come up with various results. The aim of this thesis is to enter into this debate and verify the hypothesis assuming that the decisions of foreign policy actors are influenced by socialization of respective political actor.
