The Balfour Declaration and the McMahon Letters. Great Britain and the Near East during the Great War.

Bachelor thesis The Balfour Declaration and the McMahon Letters. Great Britain and the Near East during the Great War analyses the promises of the United Kingdom to Arabs and Jews from the First World War contained in the McMahon Letters and in the Balfour Declaration relating in particular to the territory of the Middle East. It focuses on the circumstances of the formation of these documents, both on the contemporary conditions and the objectives to be achieved by them. It also deals with the wording of these documents and the contents of the British promises, while questioning whether it would be possible to realize them simultaneously or they were excluding each other. The opening chapter presents the situation of the Ottoman Empire, Arab nationalism, Zionism, and the empire of the United Kingdom until the beginning of the First World War. The second chapter explains the British interest that influenced the formulation of these documents. The third chapter discusses the emergence of the McMahon Letters and the Balfour Declaration and examine their contents.

That's the way we fought and died. World of a legionary in the press reflection of Czechs and Slovaks in Russia in years 1914-1920.

The topic of this bachelor paper is an insight on the life of the soldiers fighting under the banner of the Czechoslovakian legions on the Russian front during the First World War. The paper does not deal with the situation on the battlefields but tries to show the life of the soldiers at the base, their pastime, when they put their guns aside and dealt with the usual daily routines. The crucial sources of information about the daily life of a legionnaire were the foreign resistance magazines made by the soldiers themselves. The opening part of this paper introduces the individual types of the printed matter issued in Russia and describes why and under what circumstances they were written. The following chapters describe how the soldiers spent their free time, what they did, how they had fun, or what problems they dealt with. The attention is given not only to the life of the troops at the base on the eastern front but also to the transport over the Siberian Railroad to the east and the evacuation of the troops on ships to Europe.

The returns of Volhynian Czechs and their assimilation, with special regard to the Vyškov region

In the mid and late-19th century, about 15,000 Czechs left for Russia in search of a new life. Most of them settled in the Volhynia Governorate. They bought land, established Czech villages, developed hop growing. In World War I they supported the foundation of the Czechoslovak legions, and many of them also joined the legions. After this war, several hundred Czechs returned to their homeland. In World War II, they rejoined the resistance and formed the foundation of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps. After the war, most of them claimed re-emigration. The Czechs in Volhynia experienced what Soviet communism was like, as well as persecution, collectivization, and also Ukrainian nationalism. However, returning to the homeland was not easy, and their repatriation was accompanied by many difficulties. Many of them disagreed with the incoming communist regime and warned the population of Czechoslovakia against it. A big number of Volhynian Czechs were kept under surveillance and imprisoned by the communist regime. Love for the country and hard work have always been significant in the history of Volhynian Czechs.

The dissertation called "Belarusan Democratic Republic" (BDR) analyzes in broad terms progression of belarus national movement since beginning of 20th century until the end of the year 1918. In the strict sense of the word the aim of that thesis is to evaluate to what degree is possible to consider BDR as real republic at the date of its formation and to what degree could be operationable its government authorities. What criteria had confirmed or had contradicted the existence of BDR as a real state. BDR had been a certain culmination of belarus national movement. In the beginning of the dissertation we will take attention to origins of national movement, its developing in the frame of the tzar's Russia and during the first world war. Comparation of possibilities of national agitation at the time of separation of belarusan districts between two warenemies is also included in the first part. Following part, which we focus on, is explaining what conditions have been for proclamation of independence, what motivations and requests of belarusan patriots have been. The motif of death in art in the years 1890-1918

The aim of the bachelor's thesis will be to deal with the motive of death in the visual arts at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and during the First World War. It is a time of many social changes, when the number of suicides increased despite the increasing life expectancy. The work introduces and analyzes various motives related to death and dying and their changes over the course of almost thirty years. It will follow the content shift of these motives, such as the frequency of their occurrence, their connection with the development of society etc. In the context of the First World War, the bachelor's thesis will also include selected works created after 1918 related to the events in that times. Last but not least, the work introduces the topic from a sociological point of view, and therefore touches on statistical data on mortality and common causes of death in the years 1890 to 1918, etc.

The theme of this bachelor thesis is our for the time being last king Blessed Charles I the Emperor of Austria. The work describes artworks linked to the Emperor. It deals with orders, decorations and medals he established. It gives an account of the postage stamps and the coins where he is portrayed. It also focuses on Charles' portraits, coronation mintages and memory medals connected with his Imperal and Royal Majesty and compares them with selected coronation and jubilee mintages of the Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, Wilhelm II, Germany Emperor, and George V, the King of the United Kingdom.The bachelor thesis is also supplemented by a brief biography of Charles.

Transformation of Austrian and Hungarian law during the First World War (1914 - 1918) Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the analysis of changes in Austrian and Hungarian law during the First World War with a focus on the Cisleithanian part of the monarchy. At the same time, it seeks to answer the question of whether the measures taken were proportionate to the circumstances of the war. Specifically, it examines changes in constitutional, administrative, criminal and civil law. Other branches of law are also mentioned in passing. The method is a comparison of the pre-war state with important legal norms adopted in case of war or in response to war developments. All this is complemented by a contemporary context with an emphasis on the history of the Czech lands. The thesis uses both primary sources, in the form of norms of Austro-Hungarian law, and secondary literature. In general, it can be stated that the changes adopted were pervasive, in all areas examined. However, the intensity and proportionality varied according to the specific legal sector. At the level of constitutional law, there was a de facto change in the form of the state from a constitutional monarchy to a military-administrative dictatorship, and some civil rights were suspended. The Proponents of the Czecho-Slovak Independence in English and American press between 1914 - 1918

The thesis analyses the reflection of the Czechoslovak freedom movement within the English and American daily press during the World War I (1914 - 1918). In its theoretical part the thesis provides the chronological framework of the Czechoslovak movement and discusses its main challenges as well as essential milestones and achievements. It also introduces the reader to the most popular theoretical concepts regarding the idea of the Czech national independence existing at the brink of the war. With regard to the historical perspective the thesis also elaborates on the development and timeline of Masaryk's exile endeavour as well as personal relations, the latter contributing greatly in promoting the Czechoslovak cause abroad. In its analytical part the thesis deals with the sample of media articles related to the issue of Czechoslovaks and their pursuits. Using the qualitative approach it reconstructs the media frameworks through which the theme of the Czechoslovaks was presented and interpreted in a variety of British and American dailies during the Great War. Besides the daily press it also builds its findings upon the historical literature, archival documents and correspondence.
