Changing in Place Identity of Two Working-Class Neighbourhoods in Kladno since the mid-20th Century: Podprůhon & Nové Kladno
Čermák, Adam ; Chromý, Pavel (advisor) ; Kučera, Zdeněk (referee)
The thesis focuses on the place identity of two working-class neighbourhoods in Kladno since the mid-20th century. It describes the historical development of all neighbourhoods in Kladno, but it analyses Podprůhon and Nové Kladno as prototypical examples. Although the two are close to each other, they have developed differently: Nové Kladno was transformed into a housing estate; Pod- průhon was left to its natural, gradual development. An essential part is a qualitative and quantita- tive research. It studies the people's relationship to both localities, the first impression of them, and whether the conclusions differ according to the respondents' ages. It exploits interviews with resi- dents and questionnaire survey with non-residents. The results are put in context with plans and artistic works, allowing for a detailed description of the identity of both localities. Nové Kladno has lost its identity due to its transformation and has not yet built a new one, while Podprůhon has re- tained its identity despite becoming an excluded locality in the 1980s. As there are many neigh- bourhoods with similar developments in Czechia since the mid-20th century, the interpretations from this thesis can be generalised as case studies of the industrial heritage transformations not only in Kladno. Illéš, Juraj ; Deferová, Michaela (referee) ; Zemánková, Helena (advisor)
This master’s thesis deals with the conversion of the area of the former textile factory Larisch and Sons in Krnov. The urban design of the area introduces a reinterpretation of the mill race corridor, and creates attractive public spaces connected with the castle area and the historic city center. New functions are proposed in today’s unused historic buildings. The buildings of the former spinning mill and warehouse are converted into administrative and residential premises. The buildings of the former sample room and the production hall house the museum of the textile industry. The architectural solution seeks to preserve the original historical values of the existing buildings and, through the proposed additions, to bring a modern architectural expression to the area that respects the industrial character of the place.

The Adaptation of Industrial Heritage in the Context of Existing Urban Structures
Struhařík, Daniel
Two industrial sites are compared on the basis of a collective case study – a former textile factory complex belonging to Vlněna in Brno which has been demolished, together with the Löwenbrau brewery, which has been converted into a viable site with apartments, offices and a gallery (thanks to the reconversion and completion of new contemporary layers). The fundamental difference was found to be a result of the respective public sector’s differing approaches, especially in the sphere of spatial planning. Due to the long-term strategy, identification of qualities and potential based on discussions with developers and the further involvement of other participants, Zurich city is about to revive its industrial quarters whilst also preserving important traces of the past. The example of Brno is different. The spatial “zoning” method causes a specific development without maintaining any existing spatial qualities. Another reason is the attitude of the National Heritage Institute, which does not take the importance of the Vlněna complex into consideration in its decisions altogether with its reference to the former development of Brno city as a part of the local industrial heritage.

MUSEUM OF TEXTILE INDUSTRY IN BRNO
Pešková, Lucie ; Zemánek, Václav (referee) ; Zemánková, Helena (advisor)
Master's thesis is focused on conversion of former textile-industry area located in Brno-Obřany. The aim of the thesis was to build a new textile museum within the area’s landmark, former cotton mill, and to revive the whole surrounding area for both the locals and tourists. The exceptionality of this place lies on the industrial atmosphere and uniqueness of the island, on which the whole area spreads out. I achieved the overall program of the area through detailed analysis of neighbourhood and it’s needs and possibilities, as well as I studied the programs of successful textile museums worldwide. The project revives the whole island area; in contrast to the industrial history, the area is widely covered with green vegetation and adjusted as a leisure park. Besides a textile museum, there is also a great hall, an energy exposition with original Kaplan turbine, a cyclo-point and a snack bar.
