Tableau Vivant and its Practice in the Czech Milieu of the Second Half of the 19th Century
Daňková, Lucie ; Prahl, Roman (advisor) ; Rakušanová, Marie (referee)
The thesis explores the phenomenon of so-called living pictures, often internationally known under the French translation of the phrase - as tableaux vivants (in singular form a tableau vivant). It is a type of theatrical performance and a paratheatrical genre performed by participants in costumes who, for a short time, motionlessly maintain a certain position, so that the whole scene resembles a work of art - most often a picture, as the term suggests. As templates for the scene composition were selected famous paintings (contemporary audience then amused themselves by identifying them and by the illusion of the picture "brought to life", which the production evoked), but also sculptures; some scenes were designed from scratch, as in the case of so-called Apotheosis (a living picture meant for glorification of a certain personality) and various allegories, in the Czech milieu often with patriotic overtones. A living picture therefore had many forms, and also a variety of different functions - entertaining, aesthetic, communicating or for instance representational, which is associated with aristocratic families in particular and in our lands very considerably with the Sokol organization. Attention is focused on the "golden age" of living pictures, i.e. the 19th century, specifically in its second...

Černá, Johana ; Topolová, Barbara (advisor) ; Sarkissian, Alena (referee)

Based on his stage works in the 70's and 80's at the National Theater, the author of this thesis attempts to make a reconstruction of all his productions of that period; and thus the detailed analysis of the more significant productions characteristic to the director's style is provided. In order to define the stagings, the author bases her research upon archival theater reviews and studies in particular periodicals, photographical materials from the productions and in some cases also audiovisual recordings. Furthermore, other sources include the director's correspondence, notes about his work and the memories of his contemporary witnesses. The thesis also focuses on the historical context and the conditions at the National Theater of that particular time, which influenced Macháček's activity there.
Searching for staging tradition of Bohuslav Martinů's opera Julietta on Czech stages
Řeháková, Kateřina ; Topolová, Barbara (advisor) ; Just, Vladimír (referee)
Bc. Kateřina Řeháková Searching for staging tradition of Bohuslav Martinů's opera Julietta on Czech stages Abstract The master's thesis depicts all productions of Bohuslav Martinů's opera Julietta on Czech stages since the world premiere in Prague in 1938 till the last one, performed in Brno in 2009. It describes staging techniques and their transformations and shows how the productions make use of other productions' methods or how they are original. The pivotal production was the very first from 1938 produced by conductor Václav Talich, stage director Jindřich Honzl and set designer František Muzika who - in harmony - created a performance, which was considered perfect by the composer himself. Jindřich Honzl came up with the crucial staging dilemma which impacted next directors as well: to stage Julietta rather as a dream or more as a realistic story? The directors who were able to find a balance were more successful.
