The Possibilities of Political Participation of the Roma minority in the Czech Republic
Hon, Matěj ; Říchová, Blanka (advisor) ; Gelnarová, Jitka (referee)
In this thesis, the author raises the following question: What is the nature of the efforts of Romani elites at political participation in the Czech Republic and what is their potential? He presupposes that those currents of the Roma ethno-emancipation movement that are not defined sharply against the surrounding society are in a better position. He summarizes the basic facts from the history of the Roma in the Czech Republic with an overlap into the Central European context. He monitors the factors relevant to the examination of political acts of the Roma and subsequently characterizes their own understanding of ethnicity, showing that kinship and sub-ethnic groups are more important for the collective identification of most of the Roma. The theoretical part deals with selected authors who participated in the discussions on multiculturalism, both on the general, international, and on the national level, with special focus on Roma issues. In the final chapter the author tries to apply all the described knowledge to the three most significant projects of the Roma, through which the Romani elites engage in public affairs in the Czech Republic. They are the Union of Gypsies- Roma from the break of 1960s and 1970s, the Roma Civic Initiative, a party active in the 90s, and a civic association called...

Drug Prevention among Roma Youth
Hrabcová, Marta ; Sak, Petr (advisor) ; Janošová, Pavlína (referee)
This thesis deals with the drug prevention among Roma youth. It is based on the research among the clients of Children and Youth Centre Teen Challenge Int. I have been working there as a part time worker the last three years. Using the method of in-depth half- structured interviews, I interviewed twelve clients, ages in the range of ten to sixteen years. All of them were members of the Roma minority, which is a group significantly affected by social exclusion and wide range of socially pathological phenomena, including the use of addictive substances. Given this situation, Roma youth appears to be a group highly at-risk of drug addiction. This means that special attention should be paid to this group in selective prevention efforts. Beside this, non-specific prevention is also extremely important. In this paper I tried to show that, as many risk-factors are closely related to the very ethnic specificity of this minority. Its unique cultural features must be taken into account. Non-specific prevention should focus not only on the meaningful use of free time, but it should also seek to strengthen self-confidence, positive features of ethnic identity, ability of planning and postponing satisfaction. Some other important parts of non-specific prevention could consist of efforts to teach how to accept...

State laws controling the family life? Romani children in foster homes
Chmelová, Stela ; Červenka, Jan (advisor) ; Sadílková, Helena (referee)
Gipsy children represented fifty percent of all children living in foster homes during communism in the formal Czechoslovakia. Even though this number has declined nowadays it still cannot be considered as a significant improvement in relation to the Gipsy minority. In my thesis I am trying to describe the situations in which Gipsies, who came to czech territory from Slovakia after the WW2 found themselves in. These situations and their circumstances consequently led to the growing number of Gipsy children in substitute care. However the most importatnt question is, what the future will look like. Czech Republic has passed a law which should lead to a significant improvement in the system of substitue care as a whole. But it is not clear whether the results will fulfill the big expectations.

Romani magazine publishing which has its origins in 1969 in the Czech Republic (a part of Czechoslovakia until 1992) is a hitherto little described phenomenon. This study is based on the available specialized literature, selected Romani periodicals and interviews with Roma and non-Roma participants and witnesses of the events at that time. It provides a chronological history of the Romani population in our country from 1945 to 1991 - and monitors it with an emphasis on the conditions under which the Romani emancipation movement was being formed. This study also examines the circumstances which necessitated the formation of Romani magazine publishing. The purpose of my thesis is to present the structuring of time of eight Gypsy children aged 11 to 17, living or spending free time at prague's suburb Velká Ohrada. The central goal of this thesis is to identify the Gypsy's child structure of the day and to find out which points of a child's day are defined as crucial by child and by parents and to which event of a day these points refer to. The text is divided into theoretical and empirical part. Theoretical part focuses on pointing out the main aspects of the topic of time. First part also tackles the issue of conceptualization of time as a category itself and as a category, which structures the reality. Question of time is analysed in the context of sociology and psychology. The literature related to the structuring of time of Gypsies is also reflected in the theoretical part of the thesis. The discourse is conducted from a historical perspective and notes that the perception of time was affected by several significant milestones. Empirical part, in addition to the description of objectives, methods, research sample and environment pays particular attention to analysis of its own data of quality- oriented research - the view of Gypsy childern and their parents on how they spend different types of days (e.g. weekday, weekend day, holiday day)....
(Non) Relevance of education for children of Romany families
Jará, Marie ; Dvořáková, Markéta (advisor) ; Kubišová, Zuzana (referee)
Bakalářská práce sleduje problematiku vzdělávání dětí z romských rodin. Prostřednictvím krátkého pohledu do historie romské národnostní menšiny mapuje vztah těchto dětí ke škole, spolužákům a jako nejdůležitější vztah ke vzdělání. Práce zmiňuje úskalí, na které naráží proces vzdělávání - diskriminace, segregace, romský jazyk a tradiční romská výchova. Také nabízí možnosti řešení, jakými je asistent pedagoga, přípravné ročníky či multukulturní výchova, Na závěr práce jsou zmíněny i nestátní neziskové organizace pracující s touto skupinou dětí.
