Paclíková, Gabriela ; Dvořák, Bohuslav (advisor) ; Hofmannová, Marie (referee)
This thesis deals with the development of reading comprehension in English language which is considered essential in the study and professional life. Its aim is to design practical activities based on reading articles from the Bridge magazine, to develop reading skills in learners on level B1 of CEFR. Theoretical parts of discussion reflect the need of the teacher to perceive different texts and the importance of the press for developing reading abilities in his/her everyday life to be able to develop pupils' abilities. It gives information about reading comprehension of pupils in their mother tongue, including international context. In developing reading skills in English as a second language, skills are specified and difficulties named. The method for my practical part is the lexical approach that was developed by Michael Lewis and Jane & Dave Willis, based on teaching chunks. In order to develop reading competence, work with dictionary material is developed that should be understood as an integral part for developing autonomic skills, continued by reading with prosody and finally making operations with meaningful chunks. Activities such as reading aloud and making operations with meanings proved effective. Making notes turned ineffective. KEYWORDS reading in english, competence, magazine...

Developing Reading Skills among Students of Chinese as a Foreign Language
Válková, Eliška ; Zádrapa, Lukáš (advisor) ; Andrš, Dušan (referee)
5 ABSTRACT The present paper deals with the development of reading skills of adult learners of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) in Czech language schools and its support provided by three different Chinese language course books. Even though there are various Chinese language course books available on the market, the attention these pay to reading comprehension and its development, is still rather limited. The present master thesis proposes classroom techniques which might be used to address this problem during CFL lessons. The first chapter presents findings and recommendations based on research into the development of foreign language reading skills in general, which are, in the second chapter, subsequently followed by a summary of research findings focusing specifically on teaching reading in CFL. The demands on course books raised by researchers in both fields are then applied to reading texts and accompanying exercises included in three pre-intermediate level CFL course books, New Practical Chinese Reader (Liu et al., 2002), Boya Chinese (Lǐ et al., 2005) and Discover China (Qi et al., 2010). The outcome of the the thesis consists of 21 designed lesson plans which propose solutions to some of the issues raised in the theoretical part of the thesis. The lesson plans indicate how course book texts...

Barešová, Pavlína ; Kucharská, Anna (advisor) ; Sotáková, Hana (referee)
Literacy as a knowledge of the written form of a language has nowadays an essential meaning for casual and successful function in the society. Nowadays, to be able to read and write is a must and mastering these abilities is considered as a matter of fact not as an extraordinary ability. The necessity of the functional literacy together with a demand on high level of the society intelligence lays considerable requirements on the child population. That results in a need for a higher effort to carry out measures which could lead to a reduction of number of children who are in danger of reading and writing malfunctions and reduction of bad readers. This dissertation is tied to my previous theses (2009 and 2010) in which I focused on finding the level of reading skills of pupils taught by analytic-synthetic method (hereafter as AS method) and genetic method (hereafter as G method) for the first time at the half of the first school year, for the second time at the end of the first school year and surveying differences in a progress of reading in a connection to the method of teaching. Moreover, I was dealing with difficulties and a progress of difficulties of reading and a way of reading of so called "problematic" pupils, i.e. pupils who started to have difficulties with reading during the period above...

Chmarová, Marcela ; Hausenblas, Ondřej (advisor) ; Klumparová, Štěpánka (referee)
This thesis deals with the before-, during- and after- reading activities when working with text in teaching literature in grades 6-9. The first part describes results from testing the critical literacy of Czech students in the PISA 2009 international comparison, as well as levels of critical literacy and its place in the Framework Education Programme for Elementary Education. The reasons for using these activities and examples of them are also discussed. In the practical part, I carried out research using questionnaires to find out if and how often teachers use these types of activities and I have provided examples of those used. Next I wanted to find out which types of readers the teachers use and how these readers contribute to a student's reading literacy development.
