Burešová, Zdeňka ; Novotný, Vilém (advisor) ; Jelínková, Marie (referee)
Migration is a phenomenon which has strong impact on the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic is currently under transformation from transit country to immigration country. At the present time the situation is even more complicated because of the migrant crises which impact all of us. I suppose that the Members of Parliament will create social constructions or narratives about migrants during the sitting of parliament. I aim to identify social constructions of migrants that are created by the Czech political parties represented in the Chamber of Deputies since the 2013 election. I will divide social construction into two main groups. Ones belong to migrants and the other ones to refugees. I would like to find out if there are more positive or negative social constructions and how are benefits and punishments distributed to these groups. I would like to discover key narratives of particular political negotiation as well. Theoretical background of this thesis is the social construction of target population theory of Anne Schneider and Helen Ingram. In the manner of Lina Newton's article "It is not a question of being anti-immigrant: Categories of deservedness in immigration policy making", I will use a combination of discursive and narrative analysis as the main method. I will analyse statements and...

Stanzel, Jiří ; Kotrusová, Miriam (advisor) ; Nekola, Martin (referee)
Unemployed young people as a target population in public policy Abstract Due to recent economic crisis young people up to age of 25 became one of the most endangered groups on the labour market. Disadvantaged position of young people is caused largely by inadequate structure of their qualification, lack of work experiences and work skills or unreal perception of work conditions. According to their position on labour market experts also emphasize negative effects of long-term unemployment on youth including not creating of work habits, loss of motivation to find a job and growing passivity. Unemployed young people became an important target group of public policy. The thesis works with the theory of social construction of target populations to explain policy process towards unemployed youth. It identifies existing social constructions of unemployed young people from perspective of key actors of unemployment policy. It also tries to explain how these constructions affect unemployment policy towards young people and what other factors have influence on its shape.
Crisis of the French concept of laïcité?
Lánová, Zuzana ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
Master thesis "The Crisis of French concept of laïcité" ponders the current status of laïcité in the atmosphere of contemporary France. General feeling in French society is characterized by a negative attitude of ethnic Frenchmen towards the growing presence of Islam which is accentuated by growing Muslim's demands in economic and social fields. Main goal of this thesis is to prove that the contemporary state of the concept of laïcité can be perceived as a crisis which comes through the differences between perceptions of principles based on laïcité. This notion will be proved on the basis of the theory of social constructionism complemented by the two-way-protection theory which deals with relations between state and churches. The hypothesis anticipates that Muslims, Catholics, Non- believers and even the State are using principles of laïcité depending on actual situation and impact of different actors and in order to ensure their own interests. Thereby they create the concept laïcité as a social construct. The main field in which the thesis proves this hypothesis is the French school system which is crucial for forming and maintaining the Republic and its values. The hypothesis is argued by several concrete examples such as several legislative measures adopted by the French state, for instance the...

Corruption as Narrative
Fiala, Šimon ; Kotík, Michal (advisor) ; Volek, Martin (referee)
FIALA, Šimon. Political corruption as a narrative. Prague, 2012. Undergraduate thesis (BA). Charles University in Prague, Faculty of social sciences, Institute of social studies. Dept. of Sociology. p. 59. Supervised by Mgr. Michal Kotík. Abstract Political corruption became one of the most pressing problems of our time. We may say that corruption replaced repression as the main threat to the rule of law. This work attempts to articulate the role of corruption in relation to system legitimacy, assuming Czech Republic and the CEE countries as a model. This work approaches corruption as a narrative, which is being mobilized by the public as a critique of the way the system works. Conventionally, corruption is thought of as a pathology, which damages democracy, quality of governance and economic growth. It will be argued that it also makes sense to think about corruption the other way around - as an interpretive structure which allows introducing sense into the complex organization of society and particularly its negative outcomes. Corruption is a narrative, which allows the public to relate to problems stemming from the workings of the system. This work identifies several dimensions of the problem. It argues that corruption has a notable social dimension, which addresses inequality and injustice in general....
The NarrativeTherapy of Children Parent's Divorce Traumathized
Buková, Vendula ; Matoušek, Oldřich (advisor) ; Pazlarová, Hana (referee)
This thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part deals with two separate realms which are then interconnected in the practical part. The first realm is narrative therapy, its description, function and implementation. One of the tools of narrative therapy is a therapeutic narration, which is discussed therein and is set into the field of social work. Next comes the second realm which is the topic of a divorce and children. There we discuss the influence of a divorce on children, the participants, and we are presented with the potentiality of how to diminish the negative influence. In the following practical part, we fist find a draft of a narration with therapeutic features from narrative therapy for children from divorced and divorcing families; the draft is supposed to alleviate the complications during and after a divorce. The other section of the practical part describes the research which verified whether the composed narration really helped alleviate the negative impact of a divorce on children. Evaluation of the state of the problematic areas performed both before and after the cooperation showed that narrative therapy helped to significanly decrease the number of serious problems in monitored areas. KEYWORDS Narrative therapy, narrative metaphor, social...
Disease is neutral - Life with "depression"
Vojtková, Lucie ; Šmídová, Olga (advisor) ; Praško Pavlov, Ján (referee)
This thesis is inspired by the theory of social construction of mental illness. The work is a case study that uses the metaphor of the story and narrative analysis of interviews examining the individual human experience with mental illness. My goal was to find out what makes us understand the disease and how this understanding can be used in a daily struggle with the disease. In the theoretical part, I drew from documented knowledge about mental illness, particularly for depressive disorder and schizophrenia simplex. Then I presented the narrative approach as a legitimate way of exploring understanding of lived experience. The practical part is implemented as a case study and through narrative analysis provides interesting insight into the way of understanding and coping with mental illness a person who has the expertise and also suffer from mental illness. Key words: mental illness, social construction, narrative, narrative approach, the dominant medical discourse, depression, schizophrenia simplex, stigma, coping strategies.
