The Caricature versus propaganda: Napoleon Bonaparte visiting sick in Jaffa aka new models of political function of art around 1800
Buttigová, Katrin ; Kubík, Viktor (advisor) ; Pech, Milan (referee)
Egyptian campaign of 1798 led by general Bonaparte had an important impact on the European culture in the end of 18th century and begining of the 19th century. Also the campaign itself was strongly reflected in period art and print. Main goal of my diploma is to compare the visual appereance and thought of the caricature created mainly by the english authors on this matter, with official French propaganda under Napoleon which is visible in art of Antoine-Jean Gros' painting: Napoleon visiting the sick in Jaffa. In both cases these are distinctive illustrations of political function of art, which, mainly in the era of Napoleon I., gained new authenticity for the future evolution of political propaganda and caricature.

In the content and semiotic analysis, I am dealing with cartoons in its various forms in the Czech broadsheet newspapers MF Dnes, Právo, Lidové noviny, Hospodářské noviny, Deník, Lidová demokracie, Svobodné slovo and Práce. I surveyed the subtopics dominating in specific periods and the frequency of envirotoons depending on particular titles and current events in the Czech Republic. The thesis deals with these media contents also in connection with global environmental issues and their public discussion. Another important part is the reflection of social problems which the analyzed topics are closely related with. Combination of quantitative and qualitative methods enables to describe and interpret media units of content and lay the foundations for the research of environmental cartoons which has no tradition in the Czech Republic. In the thesis, I point to the fact that newspaper cartoons provide not only the relaxation and entertainment, but it is also an important medium in environmental agenda-setting and its discussion.

Zeman, Kryštof ; Rychlík, Jan (advisor) ; Stehlík, Michal (referee)
The essay is focused on the way the West was being reflected during the most dangerous phase of the Cold War on the pages of the Czechoslovak satirical and humoristic weekly Dikobraz (in English The Porcupine). The observed period 1947 - 1956 is deliniated by two key events in the history of the Cold War, namely the Truman's doctrine in its beginning and the breakthrough 20th congress of the Soviet Union's communist party, which led to a certain relief of the harshest Stalinist course in the Eastern block. The essay seeks to capture main tendencies in creating the content of Dikobraz, who and what were most frequently attacked and why. Together with that the essay touches on changes in the editorial staff and an impact of the changes on its content. The task was, apart from other things, to show Dikobraz as an important instrument of anti-western propaganda in the service of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. This work focuses on forms of presentation and self-presentation of two important artists living at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries - a Czech painter Mikuláš Aleš and a French sculptor Auguste Rodin. Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was one of the most important French sculptors working at the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. He is considered to be a founder of modern sculpture. Many of his statues caused scandals which made him famous and well-known also among the Czech artists. Both artists were highly appreciated by young members of the Manes Association of Fine Artists. This Association was established in 1887, since 1897 the Volné směry journal were published. Mikoláš Aleš became the first elected president of this Association.
