Conjunctural Bratislava
Sokol, Daniel ; Dostál, Petr (advisor) ; Korec, Pavol (referee)
Conjunctural Bratislava is regional study which emphasises the topic of identity and social features of the city and its impact on the physical infrastucture and organisation of the city. First theoretical part introduces the Theory of conjunctural city based on connection between hierarchy and dynamic development in broad sense. Second part provides the systematic view of Bratislava, explaining some aspects of the theory (population, economy, urbanism, transportation, culture). Short chapter is dedicated to current conceptual ideas of Bratislava in terms of a city and a region, too. The last part of the study brings a brief prognostic view of main prospects of the city and some possible problems which may occure soon or later. Empirical study in appendix is aimed to Bratislava's hiphop culture and its musical production. I analysed three local hip hop songs. Bratislava has been chosen for its uniqueness, being one of the very few remaining conjunctural cities in Europe.
Hierarchical compression
Kreibichová, Lenka ; Lánský, Jan (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
The most of existing text compression methods is based on the same base concept. First the Input text is divided into sequence of text units. These text units cat be single symbols, syllables or words. When compressing large text files, searching for redundancies over longer text units is usually more effective than searching over the shorter ones. But if we choose words as base units we cannot anymore catch redundancies over symbols and syllables. In this paper we propose a new text compression method called Hierarchical compresssion. It constructs hierarchical grammar to store redundancies over syllables, words and upper levels of text. The code of the text then consists of code of this grammer. We proposed a strategy for constructing hierarchical grammar for concrete input text and we proposed an effective way how to encode it. Above mentioned our proposed method is compared with some other common methods of text compression.
Contribution of social dominance on performance in spatial cognitive tasks in pigeons
Janská, Iveta ; Landová, Eva (advisor) ; Sedláček, František (referee)
Diploma thesis generally compares individual success pigeons in spatial tasks of varying complexity (in a role that requires abstraction of visual stimuli representing spatial relationships on the touch screen using two different strategies and spatial search task the middle plate of a series of plates with different variants of location) with hierarchical status of males and group females. Specifically thesis compares individual success pigeons in spatial tasks of varying complexity. The hardest task requires a certain level of abstraction of visual stimuli representing spatial relationships using experimentally induced two strategies: mapping strategy or specific symbol association with a position in space. The role tests on the touch screen with the help of operant conditionings. Difficulty in various stages of growing, the last stage role does manage only some individuals. Conversely easier task in real space with a bird tasked with finding the midpoint between objects in different variants locations within the arena. The difficulty of the task is not growing, and it can solve some individuals who have not learned operant conditioning if the previous job. Performance in cognitive tasks could be affected by the hierarchical status of the animal in the group. Pigeons position in the hierarchy has...
Gender in compulsory reading - Old greek myths and legends: gender analysis of the writing
Zochová, Iveta ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (advisor) ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (referee)
This thesis Gender in compulsory reading - Old Greek Myths and Legends: Gender analysis of the writing deals with literary representation of gender issues in mentioned writing, written by Eduard Petiška. The very analysis is based on analysing of gender topics and issues we are interested in and focused on. These topics are compared and showed using examples from particular myths and legend. The question whether these topics are influenced by patriarchal order in the society is the crucial for this thesis. Despite the variability of Petiška's writing, which is necessarily caused by variations of ancient and continuously construated stories; some patterns and systems are there to be found and explored by contemporary gender theories, mostly by feministic literature criticism. In this thesis the method of resisting reading according to Judith Fetterley is used. The deconstruction of the text and its hidden values which are based on male domination and the reconstruction of it in order to show the new perspective at the same moment are the main goals of resisting reading. The characters from the legends are used in context of archetypal criticism method. Considering the literature-critical perspective, the method of close reading is chosen. The question of relations and using of power, considering...
Symbolic Boundaries constructed by a a Group of Stagehands
Kubíček, Matěj ; Šanderová, Jadwiga (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
Matěj Kubíček - Symbolic boundaries constructed by a group of stgehands Abstract The author analyzes the way a group of stagehands (manual workers in the preparation of cultural events) construct symbolic and social boundaries within and especially outside group, ie to other participants in the preparation and conduct of these events. Theoretical background of the thesis is the concept of symbolic and social boundaries by Michele Lamont and Virag Molnar and the theory of moral boundaries by Andrew Sayer. Sayer's theory says that the moral boundaries of groups or societies are formed on the basis of the values shared by these groups and the moral condemnation of other groups or companies due to non-recognition of these values. Author's field work confirms that this strategy of the creation of borders is present and shows the specific values it is based on. He finds that stagehands construct symbolic boundaries that are parallel to the formal boundaries, only with opposite direction of superiority.
"All for one, one for all, but it needs to make sense" Etnography of majorettes sport fans
Soukup, Anna ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Ezzeddine, Petra (referee)
Baton twirling is a sport industry with a specific fan base. The fan community typically consists of parents and supporting friends of the baton twirling children. Baton twirling represents a significant socializing environment for both children and their enthusiastic parents and friends - fans. The social status and the role of fans within this community are subject to a symbolic capital in the form of experience and knowledge of "how-to-do-it". During the training and competition period, the hierarchy is changing within the group of fans that were monitored, which provides the community members with either a dominant or, alternate, subordinate position. The changing of the "leaders" in the role of the fans' base brings along high emotions and usually also short-term conflicts in social interactions. In other situations, a hierarchy is not created and the group members perceive each other as equal and support each other in the achievement of their common goal. The researcher has been exposed to the environment she describes and to the emotions and tensions existing therein, and she has separated her own personal perceptions, attitudes and biases with the aim to correctly reflect her experience in the research. The ethnographic research of an athlete's group, or its fans' base, respectively, has...
Breaking free from the dominance and establishing independent policy: The analysis of Saudi-Qatari relations and its implications on the region of the Persian Gulf
Denk, Matěj ; Daniel, Jan (advisor) ; Aslan, Emil (referee)
The main topic of the thesis Breaking Free from the Dominance and Establishing Independent Policy: The Analysis of Saudi-Qatari Relations and its Implications on the Region of the Persian Gulf is a thorough analysis of the historical developments of bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar. This hierarchical relationship between the two states is analysed according to the theories of alliance formation, MENA foreign policy analyses and international hierarchy. The aim of the thesis is to ascertain how Qatar was able to break free from the subordinate position within the hierarchical relationship with Saudi Arabia. Contrary to other existing research within the field which explains the end of subordination mostly with the crisis in the dominant state, the present thesis addresses other possible factors in the subordinate state that ultimately cause the evasion of the subordination with particular emphasis on the case study in question. The thesis proposes a classification of several distinct eras in Saudi - Qatari relations and verifies them against the theories described above. The thesis' findings support the hypothesis that subordinate states can evade the subordination without a crisis in the dominant, but only in a very specific set of circumstances, which...
The position of female journalists in Czech media. A case study of MF Dnes from 1989 up to the present
Ježková, Adéla ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Štefaniková, Sandra (referee)
The aim of this Bachelor's thesis The position of female journalists in Czech media. A case study of MF DNES from 1989 up to the present is to analyze the potential influence of gender in the journalistic profession. Through the analysis of articles published in the Czech daily MF DNES, the thesis presents in which sections women publish their stories, what type of news they cover and to what extent they cocreate the media content. The self-reflection of the female journalists themselves is presented through semi-structured interviews with two current and four former newsroom members. Interviewees answered several general questions about the profession's characteristics, followed by questions focused on the potential gender inequalities that women in journalism may face. Their experiences, thoughts, feelings and wishes provide an in-depth insight into the issue. The theoretical part deals with the development of women's position in journalism. Quite a significant part is devoted to the presnce of gender in newsrooms and gender stereotypes, differences and inequalities that occur the most in the journalistic environment.
Hierarchy and human behavior. BDSM as an alternative sexual behaviour.
Jozífková, Eva ; Weiss, Petr (advisor) ; Bob, Petr (referee) ; Zvěřina, Jaroslav (referee)
Preferences for sexual arousal by overstated dominance and submission in sex is categorized as F65.5, sadomasochism, according to ICD, but this behaviour is called BDSM among the general public. The ground of these preferences could be ultimately biological. These preferences reflect behavioural strategy which enables to gain higher reproductive success. Men and women who were sexually aroused by a submissive partner had more male relatives than men and women with other preferences. Contrary to the women, the dominant men reported themselves as more attractive. Women who were aroused by a higher-ranking partner considered themselves more attractive. Sons of couples in which was hierarchical disparity had more siblings than sons of "equal" couples or couples with no hierarchical disparity. Daughters of hierarchically disparate couples had more brothers than daughters of "both dominant" partners. Concurrently, number and gender of offspring as well as self- reported attractiveness are likely to be criteria of the reproductive success in humans. It is also interesting that hierarchically disparate couples, without regard to gender of higher-ranking partner, reached higher reproductive success than "equal" couples. Individuals who preferred higher- or lower-ranking partner were also aroused by...
