Deutschová, Kristýna ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Knapík, Jiří (referee)
The diploma thesis Comparison of the Exile Press's View of Events in Czechoslovakia Using Národní politika and České slovo As Examples analyses the content of exile periodicals relating to the events in Czechoslovakia from the late 1960s until 1989. The analysis focuses on four events which can be seen as key moments in the period in question. The first event covered in the work is the Prague Spring, commencing with the first flashes of change to the occupation by the Warsaw Pact forces and its consequences. The analysis then explores the Helsinki Conference and the related civil initiative of Charter 77. The last even analysed is the Velvet Revolution and the period immediately preceding it. The first part of the thesis gives a historical overview of the development of the situation in Czechoslovakia during the period in question with an emphasis on the aforementioned events in Czechoslovak history. The second part analyses and compares selected periodicals' view of these events and their reaction to the development of the situation in Czechoslovakia. Emphasis is also placed on how exiles saw their role in the events in Czechoslovakia. The thesis also focus on the second wave of emigration, often referred to as the post-August emigration, which brought a series of new challenges, including dealing...
For a New Approach to the Czechoslovak Exile in Paris during the Normalisation through Oral Sources
Martin, Clemence Julia ; Wohlmuth, Petr (advisor) ; Mücke, Pavel (referee)
This thesis is a contribution to the study of the Czechoslovakian exile in France with a special focus on the years 1968-1989, or the so-called Normalization. The aim is to answer certain questions that can only be approached through oral history. Thus, on the basis of interviews with six different narrators, we will try to understand the reasons and conditions of their departure before focusing on the establishment of their new life without reference points in Paris, far from home but also in contact with other migrants. As exile has shaped our narrators, special attention will be paid to questions of identity and memory. Keywords: Exile, Czechoslovakia, France, Communism, Normalization, Oral History.
Russian Exile and Inner Emigration - an Irregular History of a Cultural Phenomenon.
Souček, Martin ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (referee) ; Urban Otto, (referee)
In my dissertation "Russian Exile and Inner Emigration An Irregular History of a Cultural Phenomenon" I attempt to examine the issue of the Russian mentality against the background of Russian literary and intellectual trends over the course of one hundred years - from the December Revolt in 1825 to the period after the October Revolution in 1917. The phenomenon of inner emigration and exile, which is characteristic for this period of time, is examined through the use of authentic sources, that is solely literary and epistolary records, as well as through the Czech reflection of the Russian soul, as it was perceived and presented from the time of Masaryk and Slavík and after them by many Czech and foreign scholars up to the present. Examining authentic testimonies, the aim of the work is to make the point that despite the confrontation with European rationalist influences, the Russian world and the so- called Russian soul essentially always retained a spiritual dimension from the Eastern civilizations, based not on rationality but on sensation, not on scholastic argumentation of the external existence of God but on a realization of the unity and the inner interconnection of the material and spiritual world.

Well-established Czechoslovak compatriots managed to react effectively to the changes in Czechoslovakia after 1948. Complex issues such as the assistance and support of the refugees and new immigrants were solved in the cooperation with other global Czechoslovak exile organizations. Main role among the organizations in Canada belonged to the Czechoslovak National Association in Canada, Masaryk Memorial Institute and to the gymnastic organization Sokol. Highly...

Kuslová, Kristýna ; Christov, Petr (advisor) ; Sarkissian, Alena (referee)
The thesis deals with four plays written by French dramatist and theorist of feminism Hélène Cixous for the Parisian Théâtre du Soleil under the directorial guidance of Ariane Mnouchkine. The analysis focuses on three different perspectives - firstly on écriture feminine, defined in the 1970s by Cixous herself, secondly on exile studies, a field of literary criticism concerned with the writings of exiled authors and exile as a fundamental category of human existence, and lastly on the concept of orientalism developed in the 1970s by American literary historian of Palestinian origin Edward Said.

Batistová, Anna ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Jonáková, Anna (referee)
Thesis "Milan Kundera's 'The Joke' supervised. Critical reception of the novel in the context of its release and today" deals with critical reflection of the novel 'The Joke' in the period from the end of the 1960's up to current reviews. The author dedicates first chapters to the cultural and political background of the release. The core of the thesis focuses mostly on critical reception of the novel, which is divided into three historical periods. In the first part of the critical historical analysis and qualitative analysis, the author examines critical acceptance of the novel in the aftermath of its release (1967-1969), in the Czechoslovakian and exiled journals and literary magazines in particular. The second part considers critical reaction to the novel throughout 1970's and 80's, and stresses outcomes of the reception in the sixties, official normalized critical reviews and the acceptance in the exile and samizdat literature as well. Finally, the last part of the thesis offers contemporary critical response to 'The Joke', analyzed on the basis of Czech journals, literary magazines and newly emergent Kundera's monographs and on the basis of French critical reception of the Milan Kundera's collected work in the prestigious La Pléiade Gallimard edition. Summarizing critical reception in each...

Film and regime. Official and unofficial reflection of normalization film-making
Shehatová, Amira ; Klimeš, Ivan (advisor) ; Přádná, Stanislava (referee)
In my bachelor's thesis I deal with the reflection of selected normalization films of Věra Chytilová and Jiří Menzel in official as well as unofficial press. I am not concerned with the films on their own but rather with the reactions in newspapers, samizdat and exile periodicals. First I outline the contemporary historical and social context. Further I pay attention how did the changed political arrangement influenced the official culture and media. Then I continue with alternative culture description which includes printing the samizdat periodicals. To complete the picture I include the texts from exile periodicals as well. Next two chapters of my thesis examine the particular texts in detail. I was mainly interested in how the critics percieve the same films from thier different ideological, social and geographical position. What they can agree on and when on the contrary their views are completely different. Key words: film, normalization, samizdat, exile, Věra Chytilová, Jiří Menzel

Duchková, Zuzana ; Soukupová, Blanka (advisor) ; Moravcová, Mirjam (referee) ; Jiroušek, Bohumil (referee)
Identity after Historical Change. Anti-Hitler Emigration of Fine Artists from Germany and Czechoslovakia to Great Britain (1933-1945). Mgr. Zuzana Duchková This dissertation thesis deals with a group of German and Czechoslovak fine artists (Erich A. Bischof, Kurt Lade, John Heartfield, Ludwig Meidner, Heinz Worner, Bedřich Feigl and Karel Vogel) who decided or were forced to exile from their home countries to Great Britain after Hitler came to power and stayed there during the Second World War. Research methods adopted from historical anthropology, approaches used in exile research and identity theory have been used to examine the impact of the extensive historical change on their personality as well as "artistic identity". A key area of the research is the period of 1933-1945, however, the lives of the artists before emigration have been outlined too.
