The Dog in Linguistic Picture of the World in Czech

I. Abstract This paper is based on the theoretical principes of the Polish ethnolinguistic works introduced in the first part of this paper. We pay special attention to the theory of anthropocentrism of a natural language. The main focus of this theory is the differentiation between "one's own" and "human" on one side and "someone else's" and "non-human"on the other in a cognitive comprehension of the world. We further apply the anthropocentric approach to outline the conceptualization of domestic animals in the Czech language. The second part of the text deals with the expression pes (‚dog') in Czech and its derivatives, their position within the lexical system, their semantics, connotations and the stereotypes associated with them. The conclusion presents a cognitive definition of the concept pes (‚dog') in Czech. The definition builds upon the entry structure of the Polish Dictionary of Folk Stereotypes and Symbols.

(Appendix 1: author's book for children The Dog Who Thinks Something) (Appendix 2: presentation of the project Through the Eyes of a Dog) This diploma thesis deals with a dog as a bearer of contemporary historical and cultural contexts. The theoretical part describes the history of the domestication of dogs, their relationship to humans, symbolism and mythology, and maps the associated depiction in the history of fine art. Attention is then focused on the relationship between dogs and kids with an overlap into children's literature and on illustrations with emphasis on author's book for children. Finally, there is a devotion to the representation of dogs in assisting with the educational and therapeutic processes. In the practical part theoretical knowledge is applied in the form of a author's book for children called The Dog Who Thinks Something. The story and illustrations reflect the world through the eyes of a dog which mirrors thinking, feeling and the natural need to belong to someone. Ecological ethics

The issue of ecological ethics has often been discussed because it is important for the development of further generations. Nature and culture are not at the same level, yet culture is subordinate to nature. Because of human influence, the harmony of nature is endangered and we live in an ecological crisis. This master's thesis compares the opinions of experts in Czech environment who perceive the ecological ethics, collisions of nature and culture and environmental sphere from the point of philosophy. In the first part, there is a theoretical basis of ecological ethics and the elementary classification. Further, the development of ecological ethics in the Czech phylosophical thinking is presented. In the main part, the author always explores two selected ideas of Czech professionals - Erazim Kohák, Josef Šmajs, Hana Librová, Petr Jemelka and Jan Patočka. The conclusion of the thesis is that although all the authors come from various conceptions, their results are more or less corresponding. It is fundamental to accept a personal responsibility and not to long for power and profit. It is imporant to indicate and become aware of ecological crisis and start to solve it on our own at first (e. g. by voluntary modesty and awareness that we leave a legacy for further generations). Somatisms in Czech Phraseology (The Respiratory System)

The bachelor thesis deals with the linguistic picture of the world of somatic idioms with components of the respiratory system, namely the nose, throat, lungs, diaphragm, and bronchi. The theoretical part explains the basic concepts and fundamentals of cognitive and cultural linguistics, primarily focusing on cognitive linguistics, the linguistic picture of the world and its definition and properties, anthropocentrism, the theory of conceptual / imaginary schemes, metaphors, metonymy and its types, and last but not least, phraseology. The practical part is organised into chapters, each of which revolves around a single corresponding somatism. Their etymological and anatomical characteristics are discussed, as are particular semantic areas and idioms in which the somatisms play a primary role. Lastly, those imaginary schemes thar are involved in the conceptualization of a given organ in the linguistic picture of the world are presented. The thesis is supplemented with the knowledge of psychosomatics which, given the premises of some idioms being conditioned directly by psychosomatics itself, have turned out to be of great utility.

Proenvironmentální postoje a chování žáků vybraných středních odborných škol

This thesis deals with the environmental attitudes and declared behavior of pupils of selected secondary technical schools. This work is divided into theoretical and practical part. The aim of the theoretical part was based on technical sources to make a summary of examined issues. The aim of practical part was to find out what pupils attitud in secondary technical schools for environmental issues. Another aim is to determine whether their conduct is consistent with the declared positions. Questioning a questionnaire technique is main method of practical part in this thesis. The questionnaire is based on the Likert scale. Questionnaires were administered at two secondary technical schools. It was a school with environmental profiling and without environmental profiling. Evaluation results survey is carried out and recommendations for educational practice is stated in the end of this thesis. Pupils from both schools occupy proenvironmental attitude on environmental issues. Behavior of students from selected schools aren´t in line with the declared proenvironmental attitudes.

Head in the Linguistic Picture of the World in Czech

This thesis focuses on the image of "hlava" (head) in the Czech linguistic picture of the world. It is based on theories and methods of cognitive linguistics. The purpose of the thesis is to describe the structure of the meaning of the word hlava. The paper by I. Vaňková and V. Vitkovskaya was used as a methodological and theoretical starting point. In that paper four semantic profiles of "hlava" are defined. The results of Vaňková and Vitkovskaya were compared with the findings of our research. We try to find out, whether the mentioned profiles are valid on a larger linguistic material, too. Two types of data are analysed - systemic data (especially phraseology, then also etymology of the word, derivatives, compounds and synonyms) and corpus materials (from Czech National Corpus). Then, we also compare the differences in the findings between systemic and textual (corpus) data. Finally, all results are summarized in the cognitive definition of hlava.

Social Construction of Species superiority

This thesis charts the social construction of species superiority in the Euro-Atlantic civilizational area. The goal is to describe the process of construction of this superiority and simultaneously to describe the impact of it. The beginning of the species superiority was domestication of the wild animals. Second defining moment was the transition from a traditional into industrial society, in which the animals where materialized and considered to be an object in trading relationships, as well as the belief in legitimate use of animals for economic purposes in the society. This belief is thoroughly irrational. Throughout the process of reality construction the society begun to perceive the given status as natural and right. In order to escape the question of ethical contradiction it has crowded out the negative aspects of that reality from the perception of its members, in which some psychological mechanisms are helping individuals to escape the reality. The final chapter of this thesis charts the conditions that have made the Holocaust possible and on which our modern rational-economic system lays ground. These conditions are being preserved in the "nature" of the economic system itself.

Anthropocentrism According to Living Nature

This diploma thesis is inquired into the problematic of anthropocentrism and it' s relationship with the living nature. It is obvious that the anthropocentrism contributed to the current ecological crisis. The author is trying to delimit the definition framework of anthropocentrism and to find it's social, scientific even religious roots and to find the possible ways out of the crisis. The author also presents the key-concepts and theories that are non-anthropocentrically based and that are presenting the possible alternative attitude to the environment connected with the transformation of human values. Concretely it engages James Lovelocks Gaia Theory, Arne Naesses deep ecology and ecosophy or the Fritjof Capras new paradigm. Farther away it also follows the possibility of practical change of our life-concepts and as it's example describes the new concept of voluntary simplicity and New Age.

The thesis is based on the theory of cognitive linguistics, especially on theory of semantic school of Lublin. Nose in the Linguistic Picture o the World in Czech

The thesis tries to grasp the meaning of lexeme nos "the nose" in cognitively-linguistic perspective, namely in particular through colocation and idioms, which contains the lexeme nos. The goal of this thesis is to define so-called semantic profiles of concept NOSE and to formulate cognitively cultural definition of nose consequential from its location in the Czech linguistic picture of the world. For this purpose nose first will be subjected to analysis from two different perspectives - from medical perspective, which represent the scientific view on the world, and from the perspective of a common user of the language, which represent so- called naive picture of the world. Data relating to the lexeme nos will be excerpted from Czech monolingual, synonymous, etymological and phraseological dictionaries, the semic analysis will be done and the lexeme nos will be included to systemic relationships in Czech vocabulary. Nose also will be introduced in a ligth of an additional perspectives of an alternative medicine and a pseudoscientific disciplines: the phrenology and the physiognomy. Their knowledges play some role in a formation of a naive picture of a nose. The questionnaire research is too a part of the thesis.
