Cardinal Josef Beran S.M.Bernadetta Pavla Pěstová, OSU This thesis deals with reference and work of Josef Cardinal Beran, especially from the perspective of his pastoral work as an educationalist, the diocesan bishop and cardinal living in forcible exile. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first charter describes Beran's life hierarchically and emphasizes his clarical activity. The second charter deals with his teaching activities. Furthermore, this charter focuses on the selected publications that Cardinal Beran wrote during his life. A fundamental part of this thesis is the third chapter, dealing with the activities of the Archbishop from 1945 to 1949. The final chapters are devoted to activities in the intervent of Josef Beran in Roman exile. Cardinal Josef Beran ranks among the leading personalities of the 20th century. The Relationship of Hedonism and Humanism

The diploma thesis discusses the relationship between humanism and hedonism. However, its main objective is not to explain the terms in their summarized historical relatedness but to point out their internal coherence. The fundamental issue the thesis deals with is the fact that sentient beings suffer from sorrow. Enumerating the reasons why it is important to search for a solution would be a waste of our reader's time. It is necessary to understand that we don't expect empirical science to solve the problem since - despite the enthusiasm significant for this modern period - has not introduced any relief from sorrow. Here comes the opportunity for philosophy and, eventually, ethics. In its first part the thesis maps out the context of humanism and hedonism, studies their apparent as well as hidden nature, and lays the conceivable foundations of humanistic hedonism. The following section suggests a set of particular steps. Adhering to these instructions makes it possible to experience delight and to eliminate sorrow.

The development of English-language historiography of Stalinism during the Cold War

The bachelor thesis deals with the development of historiography of Stalinism discipline in the West, its origin and fundamental milestones, in the context of international relations of the Cold War. The aim of this work is to compare the extent to which Stalinism was interpreted in the West and in the East in a similar way, and evaluate to what extent there was the same thematization and periodization. The thesis deals with the issues that were associated with various foreign policy swings of the Cold War, and analyzes how significant the legitimizing role of this discipline was in the West. The most important milestones and trends in the field are examined through a combination of historiographical interpretation and comparison of publications written by relevant researchers of this field. The thesis states that assessments of Joseph Stalin's government converged in the West and East in parallel with warming of mutual relations and alienated with their cooling, yet it cannot be argued that Western historiography of Stalinism served as a purely legitimizing tool of policy toward the East.

Institutional Changes of the CPC's Central Commitee Organs in the Period of 1951 to 1953

The objective of this work is to introduce institutional changes of the organs of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist party in the years from 1951 to 1953 and to do that with the help of secondary literature related to this topic and studying documents from the archive. The work will begin with a short historical contextualization and a part regarding the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist party will follow subsequently. After this input the attention will be concentrated on the institutional changes of the organs of the Central Committee which will be described in the context of domestic events and events that occurred in the Eastern bloc. Language and Totalitarianism

The diploma thesis Language and totalitarianism deals with the relation between these two phenomena. On the basis of key thinkers dealing with totalitarianism it formulates its own definition of totalitarianism. It presents the communication theory of Karl Wolfgang Deutsch, on which basis it points to the close relation between communication and political systems, concretely between language and totalitarianism. Language is analysed mainly on the thoughts of Ferdinand de Saussure and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Totalitarian language is explained using mainly Orwell's totalitarian language newspeak in 1984. A practical analysis of a sample of Rudé právo form the era of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia in the years 1948-1989 shows its manifestations in real use. At the end of the thesis political correctness is introduced as an example of totalitarian tendencies in liberal democracies.

Deportation of the Chechens and Ingushes. Contribution to History of Caucasus in the Second Half of the 20th Century

The thesis "The deportation of Chechens and Ingushes. Contribution to the history of the Caucasus in the second half of the 20th Century" focuses on forced relocation of ethnic groups in 1944 from their homeland in Central Asia. The author presents the causes of deportation, describes itself transport, living conditions in places colonization and subsequent release of the totalitarian regime to rehabilitation and return to the Caucasus. The thesis used in addition to the literature and archival materials. Important part of the thesis include testimony of witnesses (oral history) collected by the "snowball". The aim of this thesis was to assess the physical, demographic and moral damage caused by the deportations and to prove the relationship between it and the subsequent ethnic conflicts in the Caucasus, and also to determine what role they played in the implementation of the deportation policy and subsequent rehabilitation of the different representatives of the Communist Party and the Soviet state headed by Josef Stalin. Relocation left trauma in the memory of the survivors in the second and third generation, and Russian state itself caused due to significant financial losses and other problems with which compensates today.

Press Act no. 81/1966 and its influence on the events of the Prague Spring

Thesis deals with the Press Act no. 81/1966 Coll., on periodical press and other mass media and its influence on the events of the Prague Spring reform in 1968. I wanted to highlight how important role the press act and its legalization of censorship of the press and other mass media played in the process of democratization of the communist regime. Institutionalized censorship became the impetus for sharpening criticism of the ruling Communist Party. After many years when censorship interventions were carried out illegally, it was possible to lawfully defend against this tool of communist managing, controlling and restricting freedom of expression and to demand its abolition. Very strongly the demand for abolition censorship came after IV. congress of the Union of Czechoslovak Writers. Part of the reform-minded senior officials of the Communist Party which supported the democratization of the system, advocated the attainment of freedom of expression, because they knew that a free media can most effectively contribute to the reform ideas with which they identify. Achieving abolition of censorship then really brought into media content quite open criticism of the existing socio situation in the country and also an appeal that it is necessary to reform it. Human Corruption and Dystopian Motifs in Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange and George Orwell's 1984

This bachelor thesis is focused on a brief analysis of the novels 1984 and A Clockwork Orange. It analyzes their differences, what they have in common and the ways in which George Orwell and Anthony Burgess implement dystopian motifs in their novels. The theoretical part deals with inspirations for both the novels and their connections to the real world and real 20th century totalitarian regimes. The practical part analyses the two dystopian worlds in the novels, their governments, protagonists and languages. It explores the novels with regard to the themes described in the theoretical part. Jonáš club as an intelectually cultural platform in the times of (the lack of)freedom

This thesis deals with history, evolution and the activity of the cultural club of kindred spirits: Jonas club. Deeper attention is laid upon the question of mechanisms by which the so-called islands of freedom were constituted in the 1970s and 1980s. As it seems, Jonas club worked as this kind of free platform, therefore the aim of this thesis is to trace the phenomena which lead to the formation of these islands of freedom. From the methodological perspective the thesis is a qualitative work, which collects the data using the method of oral history. The work is time-framed by the years 1967-1989, therefore from the era of the establishment of the club until the Velvet revolution. The chosen witnesses usually remember most of the so-called normalization period. And the apriori given topics are followed with the aim to comprehend their subjective emic perspective. When it comes to the sources, the work draws upon the magazines which the club publishes from the very beginning of its existence until nowadays. As for the structure of the work, the text is divided into three larger sections, outside of the introduction and conclusion.
