Party press and cultural policy: district of Pardubice during the normalization

This thesis gives a comprehensive picture of the press organs of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in the district of Pardubice during the so-called normalization. The first chapter describes the historical contexts of this era, particularly changes in policy after the onset of Gustáv Husák at the head of the Communist Party in April 1969. With this change is related to another topic: extensive purges in the Communist Party, which took place in 1970. The second chapter focuses on changes in the media at the beginning of normalization, in particular the abolition of some periodicals and restoring censorship, and changes in the cultural field, especially strengthening the focus on the Soviet Union, the emergence of new artists' unions and various legal regulation in order to strengthen ideological supervision of the this sphere . The third and fourth sections are devoted East Bohemian press: daily newspaper Pochodeň, published in Hradec Králové, and Pardubice district newspaper Zář. It briefly describes the history of these newspapers and their effect during the Prague Spring and subsequent developments in normalization. Comparison of the view of events in Czechoslovakia on example of Národní politika and České slovo magazines

The diploma thesis Comparison of the Exile Press's View of Events in Czechoslovakia Using Národní politika and České slovo As Examples analyses the content of exile periodicals relating to the events in Czechoslovakia from the late 1960s until 1989. The analysis focuses on four events which can be seen as key moments in the period in question. The first event covered in the work is the Prague Spring, commencing with the first flashes of change to the occupation by the Warsaw Pact forces and its consequences. The analysis then explores the Helsinki Conference and the related civil initiative of Charter 77. The last even analysed is the Velvet Revolution and the period immediately preceding it. The first part of the thesis gives a historical overview of the development of the situation in Czechoslovakia during the period in question with an emphasis on the aforementioned events in Czechoslovak history. The second part analyses and compares selected periodicals' view of these events and their reaction to the development of the situation in Czechoslovakia. Discussion about the Czech Deal

Main subject of this bachelor's thesis is a discussion about the Czech deal in the context of Prague spring 1968. This discussion took place on the pages of newspapers and magazines in the 1968 - 1969. In the first chapter of this thesis, the main factors which resulted in the loss of the reform process of Prague spring are analyzed. In the second chapter, the discussion about Czech deal is being analyzed, the original texts are being compared and the main arguments of main authors of these documents are explained. The third chapter takes into account the overlap of the original discussion about Czech deal nowadays and investigates whether some moments of the Prague spring could provide solutions for the modern society problems.

Press Act no. 81/1966 and its influence on the events of the Prague Spring

Thesis deals with the Press Act no. 81/1966 Coll., on periodical press and other mass media and its influence on the events of the Prague Spring reform in 1968. I wanted to highlight how important role the press act and its legalization of censorship of the press and other mass media played in the process of democratization of the communist regime. Institutionalized censorship became the impetus for sharpening criticism of the ruling Communist Party. After many years when censorship interventions were carried out illegally, it was possible to lawfully defend against this tool of communist managing, controlling and restricting freedom of expression and to demand its abolition. Very strongly the demand for abolition censorship came after IV. congress of the Union of Czechoslovak Writers. Part of the reform-minded senior officials of the Communist Party which supported the democratization of the system, advocated the attainment of freedom of expression, because they knew that a free media can most effectively contribute to the reform ideas with which they identify. Time of Prague spring 1968 reflected in the journal of Literární listy

The time of the Prague Springof 1968 drawn out in the journal Literární listy This work looks into the profile of the journal Literární listy during the period of the Prague Spring of 1968; my exposition is preceded by a reflection of the political and socio- cultural atmosphere of these times. In the introduction, I give a brief overview of what was happening on the political and cultural scene, since the early loosening of internal relations in the late 1950's as well as through out the 1960's in the former Czechoslovakia (a so-called "melting period"), and an overall evaluation of the situation from a cultural point of view (including the relationship between writers and authorities, the emancipation of cultural journals from the official party and state policies, the development at the 4th congress of Svaz československých spisovatelů (Czechoslovak Writers' Union) and the voiced criticism of the regime. Comparsion of the concept of exile prind magazines on example of Svědectví and Listy magazines

This thesis starts with the introduction of the general historic moments of postwar Czechoslovakia. Attention is paid to the February 1948, Prague Spring and the events of August 1968. These dates established two waves of emigration from Czechoslovakia. In this context, there are presented personalities of Jiri Pelikan and Pavel Tigrid as leading personalities of exile. The analytical part focuses on the comparison of Tigrid's Svedectvi and Listy published by Jiri Pelikan. Analysis is based on important events in postwar history. The thesis is mainly focused on the different perceptions of the Prague Spring and the Velvet Revolution in 1989.

The Image of Czechoslovakia in the British Communist Press 1966-1969

(in English): This bachelor thesis is focused on reaction of British communists to events in Czechoslovakia in the second half of sixties. The biggest attention is dedicated to the reform year of 1968. This image is reconstructed with the analysis of the party's newspaper Morning Star in period of 1966-1969. Thesis involves chapters about the evolution of British communism, British newspaper's culture and British relations toward the countries of Eastern Bloc - especially toward Czechoslovakia. Detailed analysis of newspaper's articles regarding Czechoslovak themes in Morning Star is likewise part of this thesis. The analysis aim is to illustrate the interest in Czechoslovakia in the British communist environment and to contribute to a broader research on the Western communism.

Prague Spring from the point of view of the transition theory

Diploma thesis "Prague Spring from the point of view of the transition theory" deals with the time period of "Prague Spring" and briefly also about the following year. The application of the methods of transition tries to show the next development of Czechoslovakia in case if the development hasn't had stopped by the intervention of troops of Warsaw Pact. There is a brief development of transitology there and then; three transition theories from significant authors discussing this topic are mentioned there. Further, the attitudes of reformers to the society in the year 1968 in Czechoslovakia, changes in the society itself and in the Communist Party are investigated there. A very important fact is the international situation and influence of states of the Soviet Block to reviving process and it representatives. The main chapter offers the possible future development of Czechoslovakia after the implementation transition theories. In the last part events from the year 1969 are mentioned. Two public polls bring closer the perception of Prague Spring after 25 and 30 years and its importance for the transition to democracy in 1989.
