Europeanisation of political system of a federal state: the case of Belgium
Pluhařová, Jana ; Drulák, Petr (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
The Master thesis "The Europeanization of a political system of a federal state: the case of Belgium" investigates the Europeanization effect on a federal polity in Belgium. It discusses the relations between the federal government and the federated entities in Belgium. It addresses two questions. Firstly, what is the impact of European integration on the relations between the federal government and the federated entities in Belgium and secondly, does European integration strengthen or rather weaken the role of federal government towards regions and communities. In particular, it argues that the combination of two parallel processes - on the one hand, the deepening of European integration and on the other hand, the domestic devolution of powers in Belgium - resulted in a situation where the position of the federal government is strengthened despite the constant pressure of federated units on decentralization. Using Germany and Austria as typical cases of federations to compare, the thesis assumes that Belgium is an exceptional case of federation. While in Austria and Germany the European integration consolidates the existing relations between federal government and federated entities, in Belgium it completely changes them. It also argues that European integration shapes the dual nature of Belgian...

Masná, Zuzana ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Fišerová, Sylvie (referee)
The thesis examines how have the habits of music users changed after they had become internet users. The goal of the thesis is to put some light on the relation of part of the generation Y to the new media A method of deduction is used based on the theory of hypothesis which is subsequently evaluated by the audience (generation Y) of alternative music (surveyed years of birth 1984-1991). In the first chapter the generation Y is defined according to some of foreign authors' theories and then put in the context of the Czech environment. A technology background and possible influences on the behaviour of the music users of this generation is described. The second chapter describes transformation of the music industry from the late 90's till now which has been happening thanks to the new possibility to distribute various content on the Internet. I focus in particular on the peer-to-peer networks. By explaining the development of this matter I prepare a basis for a better understanding to both respondents' behaviour and their attitudes to illegal music downloads. I also touch upon the new media's role in the taste formation and the change of relationship between a performer and a music fan. The third chapter considers Internet to be the communication platform of the generation Y. It gives such a hypothesis that...
How is the Traditional Canadian Value of Volunteering Surviving?
TROUP, Pavel
The aim of this thesis is to test and consequently disprove or confirm the hypothesis that with the large influx of immigrants to Canada, volunteerism might not be able to survive in its present form. In the theoretical part of the work focus has been set on term definition and volunteering classification because it is a structured activity with its own rules and policy. History of volunteering has been described in the following chapter. This part goes beyond the history of volunteering in Canada since it is a deeply rooted Anglo-Saxon tradition which had been brought there by the British and French. The last chapter has been dedicated to the current situation of volunteering in Canada including a profile of a volunteer and possible current threats. The practical part has been based on a survey conducted among York University community members and an analysis of their answers. This survey became, together with my visit to the 2011 Toronto Volunteer Fair and an in-depth interview, the main source for the comparison of practice and theory.
