Cyber war for the Bronze soldier. Analysis of the computer attacks on Estonia in the spring of 2007

At the end of April 2007 a serious crisis between Estonia and the Russian Federation broke out in relation to the relocation of a war memorial from Tallinn city centre to the military cemetery on the outskirts of the city. Immediately after the displacement of The Bronze Soldier statue some rather unusual events happened whereby a number of web servers used by government offices, news portals and Estonian banks were attacked by anonymous hackers. The situation lasted for approximately three weeks and many people related to it as a type of cyber war. This work's ambition is, in the form of case study, to comprehend the incident in its historical, political and social aspects and on the bases of the lessons learned, to search for the answer to the question about how much the use of the term "cyber war" is justified in these circumstances. In the conclusion I incline to the opinion that the events were more likely just another manifestation of nationally oriented protests and disputes about history that were simply finding new space for their expression. Despite the many inconveniences that the failures of electronic services have caused to the people of Estonia, the use of war terminology in this case is rather exaggerated.

Nordic states and their support of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on their way to european structures

Diploma thesis "Nordic countries and their support of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on their way to European structures" deals with foreign policies of Denmark, Sweden and Finland towards three Baltic countries in the 1990s. The paper is focused on Danish, Swedish and Finnish bilateral support of three Baltic countries on their way to European structures, particularly to the EU. The thesis strives to explain a rationale and motives which were behind decisions of Nordic countries to help Baltic countries in the 1990s. Although the thesis is primarily focused on a development in the 1990s, a short part is also devoted to a historical development of the relations between Nordic and Baltic countries. This historical excursion helps to identify changes of Nordic foreign policies (Baltic policies) which occurred in the 1990s. The main proposition of this thesis is a statement that though there were several motives behind decisions of Nordic states to help Baltic countries, the main factor which caused high involvement of Denmark, Sweden and Finland in the Baltic Sea area were security related factors. Estonia in the Shadow of Russian Threat: Is NATO Doing Enough to Assure Its Member?

This thesis is applying the neglected concept of assurance on assuring efforts of NATO towards Estonia. This small Baltic republic lives in a fear of conflict with its Russian neighbour which would be impossible to win without help from abroad. The author asks, whether the effort to assure Estonians, that NATO would come to help in case of conflict is successful and what can be improved. To reveal, whether Estonia is assured, the author conducted research interviews in Tallinn with Estonians from the state administration, military, academics, experts from think-tanks and journalist. To get a full picture, the author also used public opinion polls. The thesis uses the concept of assurance as it was defined by Jeffrey W. Knopf. The concept is understudied and almost not used for empirical research. Importance of assuring allies is rising in contemporary's world and this thesis is trying to fill the research gap and show a possible direction for further research on the assurance of allies. Last but not least, the author is contributing to the debate about the defence of the Baltics.

Dissent in the Baltic republics

Tadeáš Fořt Abstract This bachelor thesis deals with the differences between dissent in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. All groups of dissidents were influenced by international events such as revolution in Hungary in 1956, Prague spring of 1968 and the signing of the Helsinki Final Act by the Soviet Union. Even though all dissident groups reacted to those events, the form and motivation of their protests against the regime were different. Main differences between these groups lie in national and religious differences in Baltics. While Lithuanians did not have an issue with immigration from other Soviet countries, Latvians and Estonians were becoming minorities in their own countries which heavily influenced the priorities of dissident groups. Religious differences can be seen in Lithuania too, where Catholic Church was very popular and become the staging point of dissent as well as for example creation of underground media such as Chronicle of Catholic Church in Lithuania, one of the most influential pieces of samizdat in whole Soviet Union. Churches in Latvia and Estonia, whether it would be Lutheran or Catholic did not enjoy such popularity thus their influence was highly marginal. Selected cephalopods from the Ordovician of the Prague Basin (Bohemia) and Baltica (Estonia and Sweden): taxonomy, paleobiogeography and paleoecology

This dissertation thesis is a summary of five studies published in peer- reviewed, impacted scientific journals. All of the publications are taxonomic revisions of previously unknown or little known collections of fossil cephalopods from the Early Paleozoic strata of Bohemia, Estonia and Sweden. Paleogeogra- phical and stratigraphical distributions of the respective taxa were summarized, refined and compared with contemporary fossil assemblages known from other regions. Implications on the paleoecology of the cephalopods and original envi- ronmental conditions were made. The text of the thesis is divided into three main parts. In the first part, the morphology of cephalopods is explained, stressing out the most important diagnostic characters used for their descriptions. The current systematics of the Cephalopoda is overviewed and the main cephalopod groups during the Ordovician are briefly introduced. The second part of the thesis describes the geological development and settings of the regions, from which the studied fossil cephalopods originate. The third and final part of the thesis provides a discussion and interpretation of the results of the published studies in the context of the previously published research. EU Conditionality and the Russian-speaking Minority in the Baltic States: Problems of Integration During and Beyond EU Accession

Since its inclusion in the Copenhagen criteria, the protection of minority rights has been an important political condition set by the European Union (EU) for candidate states. This thesis examines the effectiveness of EU conditionality on the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to change their ethnic policies and its affect on the Russian-speaking minority of the states. The main argument of this thesis is that the European accession process has promoted minority rights in the three Baltic states, following which the Russian-speaking minority in the Baltic States have been partially integrated. However, the domestic opposition and the potential threat from Russia hindered EU's efforts to influence outcomes of the domestic policies.

The Potential of Estonia as a Small State in International Relations

This bachelor thesis focuses on Estonia as a small state and its potential and position in international relations, it also focuses on Estonian economy and its foreign policy. First chapter concerns terms such as a small state, foreign policy and foreign policy of a small state and their possible definitions or characteristics. Second chapter focuses briefly on Estonian history, Estonian transformation to democratic state and current situation of Estonia. It also describes some Estonian specifics, its values and it briefly concerns Estonian culture. Next chapter focuses on Estonian foreign policy, its objectives, development and changes that have been implemented after gaining independance. Last chapter analyses Estonian economy and domains where Estonia has a good position or much better position than other states or even where Estonia shows especial potential. It also describes transformation of Estonian economy after gaining independance in 1991 and its reorientaion to the West. This chapter also focuses on five selected international indexes and it compares Estonian position in them with positions of other states.

This bachelor thesis deals with life expectancy, healthy life years analysis in selected countries. The begining of this thesis is devoted to explanation of individual concepts, which are used in in this thesys, later it aids on healthy life years indicator and its calculation methods, meaning and usi in practice. It ges on with hypotheses verifying or returning influence of natural, demographic, biological, socio-economic phenomena on healthy life years in selected countries. These countries are: Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Portugal, Slovenia, Finland, Island, Norway. Comparsion was made from the point of view of the EU 27/28 average, individual type sof disability were also evaluated.
