Seuplchral sculpture in Bohemia 1420-1471

The text is devoted to a production of sepulchral monuments in Bohemia in the period 1420 – 1471. It defines the reasons of a dominating low quality, small number of preserved tombstones and a domination of heraldic tombstones over figural works of that time. The main influence on this condition had Utraquist ideology critisizing luxurious tombstones and also emigration of qualified artists in the time of Hussite wars.

The War of Roses and its Influence in Illuminated Manuscripts at the English Court at the turn of the 15th and 16th Centuries

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to explain the political causes of the civil war, the so-called royal war in England between 1455 and 1487. The struggle for the throne and domination over the land between the Yorks and Lancasters took place throughout England with the support of many notable aristocratic families. The culmination of this war is the union of generations and the arrival of the new Tudor dynasty on the English throne. The main part deals with the symbol of the rose and its heraldic projection on the English courts. In the preserved book painting from Charles d 'Orleans from 1483 and 1492-1500 we can see the heraldic animals of the genera and the symbolism associated with them. We can see the gradual joining of the white York and red Lancaster roses, resulting in the arrival of the Tudor. The painting of the beginning of the Tudor family can be seen in a copy from Hugo de Lembourg of 1487, which depicts the royal wedding of Henry V. and Catherine of Valois. In 1515 Magister Sampson's coins are symbolic Tudorian shrub tree with hidden symbols that are explained in the work. Last but not least, attention is paid to displaying selected monarchs in the form of initials and book paintings.

Roudnice necrologium from 1457–1464 in the State Regional Archives in Třeboň

The necrologium of the Roudnice canonry from 1457–1464, deposited in the State Regional Archives in Třeboň, collection Velkostatek (Manor) Třeboň, registratura IA 3K β 28e, is an important source, which has required a description, basic evaluation and edition. Its text was written in one hand and in several details complements the data of the extensive Roudnice necrologium (1333–1516) in the manuscript of the National Library of the Czech Republic XIX B 3. On the appearance of the altar of St Nicholas (Mikuláš) in the church in Roudnice, it adds that it was furnished with statues, and manuscript NK ČR VII C 23 connects it with the specific donation of the parish priest of Libochovice Jan. The necrologium then provides new data on the life of the widow of Jan Smiřický and on the life of their son Václav. The geographical distribution of the records of the necrologium is not wide and unlike the Prague manuscript confraternities are completely neglected. The striking number of women in the data of the necrologium, which is in accord also with other sources (the necrologium of the monastery of the Český Krumlov Friars Minor and Poor Clares), can be evaluated only after thorough study of the Prague manuscript, but the Třeboň necrologium confirms that the Roudnice canonry was not a forgotten institution even after the Hussite storms, it was respected and supported in Roudnice and its environs and its end was rather caused by the repeated war events under the reign of George of Poděbrady than disinterest in its activity.

Prokop, Jan and the Others. The Younger Rabštejn Family in the Turbulences of the Hussite Century

The thesis deals with the significant western Bohemian noble family of the younger Rabštejns in the turbulent "Hussite Century", known also as the short 15th century (1400-1485). The primary focus of the research is the examination of the lives and careers of individual members of the family, the most prominent of which are the Chancellor Prokop († probably 1470) and the humanist Jan (1437-1473), author of the famous Dialogus. Their critically written biographies, appropriately set in the context of the political, religious and cultural history of the given period, review the factual errors of present research and answer the question of how specific nobles of the Rabštejn family managed the dramatic events of the "Hussite Century". The explication elaborated based on a classic genealogical and biographical approach is supplemented by sections on the social and economic rise of the younger Rabštejns in the 15th century, using knowledge from a modern, dynamically developing study of social mobility, royal court issues and noble representation. This, along with extensive source and literary heuristics on which the thesis is based, enables us to look at the history of the studied noble family with multiple lenses and place it in a wider context. Master Hartmann and the Swabian Woodcarving at the Beginning of the 15th Century

Master Hartmann and the Swabian Woodcarving at the Beginning of the 15th Century The stonemason Master Hartmann from Ulm is known to art historians already long time, but his role in Swabian woodcarving at the beginning of the 15th century, however, still evokes numerous questions. Although Hartmann is believed to work simultaneously in the hut and the woodcarving workshop, the average quality of his works, and the fact, that he was accepted as a citizen only in the year 1928, more than ten years after we encounter him in Ulm records for the first time, indicates certain complications of this hypothesis. In this doctoral thesis, Master Hartmann is studied from the perspective of social and cultural situation in Ulm at the beginning of the 15th century. Attention is given to his position in the hut organization on the construction of Ulm Minster and his artistic activity on the western façade, which in its iconographical concept reflects also the historical background. The second part of the thesis focuses on the woodcarving workshop, where the Altarpiece of Dornstadt was made, and on the phenomenon of wide distribution of this style around the entire Swabia. The problems of plunder in the first half of the 15th century

The main subject of the bachelor thesis is the aktivity of bandit and footpad groups. The thesis is structured as a study of a specific era the first half of 15th century in Moravia. The study is carried out by analyzing the lifestyles of their dividual members and thein connections to thein leaders. The thesis describes the typology of criminal behavior based on the number of cases mentioned in the sources and researches the relations between the bandit groups and higher nobility. The author is analyzing the structure of the sources and several approache show to work with those sources. She is trying to describe the issues as a komplex social, political and legal problem of that time.

From a Burgher House through the Imperial Court to Loket Castle The Careers of Kaspar and Mates Schlicks in Bohemia, Empire and Saxony (1390-1487) The presented thesis is devoted to the oldest history of the Schlick family. The rise of an originally burgher-class family was based on the court and chancellery career of Kaspar Schlick († 1449); the latter bolstered his successes in the services of Sigismund of Luxembourg and Albrecht and Fridrich Habsburgs by an array of false documents that significantly contributed to the change of his social and economic status (his false promotion to the estate of a count and gaining a fortune). In the second half of the 15th century, after Kaspar's death, his brother Mates and his sons struggled for the preservation of acquired status and health. The following topics were investigated: (1) The utilization of court services and careers for burghers' getting into aristocratic circles, as exemplified by the person of Kaspar Schlick († 1449); (2) The search of strategies the Schlicks - Mates Schlick in particular († 1487) - took to limit themselves from the aristocratic environment, part of which they became. Kingdom of Bohemia - Neighbour of Bavaria in the Late Middle Ages and in the Early Modern Times

DOCTORAL THESIS Ivana HERGLOVÁ --- KINGDOM OF BOHEMIA - NEIGHBOUR OF BAVARIA IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES AND IN THE EARLY MODERN TIMES --- Abstract --- The thesis is dedicated to research in the field of Bavarian-Bohemian relations, mainly in the field of politics, in the 15th and early 16th century. Main interest is given to the contacts between the Kingdom of Bohemia and the four partial duchies into which Bavaria was subdivided in this period - (Lower) Bavaria-Straubing, Bavaria-Munich, Bavaria-Landshut and Bavaria-Ingolstadt. The work is divided into four large parts. The first goes on the Hussite Wars (1419-1434/36). The second part analyses Czech royal election of the year 1440 and the motives of the selected candidate, the duke Albrecht III of Bavaria-Munich, to finally decline the election. This chapter is followed by a summary of the political cooperation between Czech kings Ladislaus Posthumus (1453-1457) and George of Podiebrad (1458-1471) and the duke Louis/Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut. The last chapter of the thesis describes the attempt of the Bavarian dukes (of the now reunited Duchy of Bavaria) William/Wilhelm IV and Louis/Ludwig X to become the kings of Bohemia as a part of their competition for hegemony in the middle European region with the house of Habsburg.
